Fred Eagleson and his wife hope to visit her .enratite to Aberdeen), Visltd Grandmother Mr, and Mrs. James Eagleson moved to Clinton when Fred was one year of age. Here he attended sehool. As a young lad he viSited his grandmother Miller (the widow Ahrens had married tire widower Michael. Miller) who lived on the present Allaire property on John Street ia a frame. ho'us'e which burned down yearS ago. • (Lucy recalls going there for cabbage and 'tomato plants when a child). Unfriendly "Sandy" Grandma Miller had a collie dog "Sandy" who didn't like Fred, /tar he the dog! So "Sandy" always had to be tied up before Fred went in the gate.. He also visited his 'aunt, Mrs. James Pollock (the Queen's Hotel) in the summer. And he felt quite important when she entrusted to him the hotel mail from Mr. Gairdner, post- master. He went swimming with his cousins, Harold and Clar- ence Pollock. Upon occasions, they took "French leave" with visitors bicycles and enjoyed a ride, • In recalling the business places, Erwin's store, James Burns and Edward's general Stores stood out in Fred's memory. Recalls The Big Fire He remembers a loveable Irish character, Jimmy Cowan ("By Judas-priest") playing his violin at the old River Hotel. And Harry and John Darrow also played violins. In Clinton, ,Fred Eagleson remembered the burning of the old Doherty Organ factory in 1895, As a boy of 14 he went to work in the new Doherty organ and piano factory (now Sherlock-Manning Piano, Co. Ltd.). Moved West He borrowed his father's bicydle to get about the district— often cycling to Brucefield, Varna and Bayfield. Finally 'his father made him buy it! One sad event was the death, of Annie Miller (Mike Miller's daughter) who died at their home in 1897. She took sick on a Sunday With appendicitis. Dr. William Gunn, Clinton, apioneer in surgery in this part of WeStern Ontario, operated but she died on Tuesday. In 1902, Fred Eagleson went to Aberdeen, South Dakota, and commenced work with the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway (Pacific was added to the name in 1911)., Doesn't Miss The Work His parents and sister Lulu followed in 1905. Both Fred and his father took up land at Hettinger, N. Dakota. Serving as a clerk and assistant yardmaster, he stayed with the railway until 1950 when he was retired. "Did you miss the work?" Lucy enquired. "Not a bit!" was the reply, "I haven't done anything since. I came doWn here to the Clinton Old Boys Reunion. Had a good time, and stayed around for a couple of months." Has Three Sons Further questioning elicited this information that he did have a garden With small fruit, etc., to occupy his time. Also he is a philatelist. He has lived in Aberdeen for 60 years, His wife is the former Edna Tuel, Webster, S.D. They have three sons, Bernard with the Fire Department, Jack hi the Post Office, Aberdeen, and Donald, an orderly at Madison General Hospi- tal, Wisconsin. This is the fifth time he has returned to his boyhood haunts. Western Pioneers Lucy learned that Alex Eagleson (Wilson's son) who was raised in Clinton, lived in Oklahoma City. He attended C.C.T. when Lucy was there and later studied art. In the course of questioning, Lucy was amazed to learn how many of the children of Mr. and Mrs. William Eagleson, Bayfield, went -to pioneer and develop the Dakotas and the Canadian West. They were: Sam and Johnny (born in Ireland) who went west in 1879-80 and took up land in the Langdon-Osnahrock area, N. Dak., near Peter Wild's big farm. Homestead Bob went out in 1891 to Langdon, N. Dak. From there he went to Alberta Where he took up a homestead and farmed successfully at Warner. Edward arrived in Langdon, N. Dak., on the day of a big picnic in 1897; also in that year, William and Wilson went to Osnabrock and took up land. And as if seven sons weren't enough to give to a new country, two of the daughters. also located in the west —Annie (Mrs, Harry Young) went to Aberdeen in 1898, and Mary (Mrs. William G. Johnston) to Milestone, Sask., about 1902. • One Stayed ,Here Jane (Mrs. John. Heard) who With her two older brothers had emigrated from Ireland with her parents when this land was new, was the only one of the ten children of Mr. and Mrs. William Eagleson to remain here. Mrs. Wilbert G. Johnston still resides at Milestone. In her late eighties, she is the only surviving member of the faintly, In company With her son Elmer (attached to RCAF), she. Visited her nephew, Emerson Heard for a few days hi 'November 1961. Lively. A Record Lucy wonders if the pioneering spirit which sent nine Mot- hers of the William Eagleson family of Bayfield to new fron- tiers, were as strong in any Other family in this district, And after so much questioning on Lucy's part (her inquit- itivenest has been criticized by tome peators), Fred Eagleson turned and Said in farewell: "God bless yotl!"
