One of his tealohers was, Henry Diehl and he also -recalled

Weltmom Johnston took Continuation School cltatsses•
in Bayffeld and contlinued hills' studies at Goderich Collegiate
Institute where he wrote his teacher's exan-Anatlops.
Variety Of Jobs
After he had obtained his certifficaMe, he -substituted in
Bayfield School for four weeks for his last teacher here,

the Sarnia Tunnel before-gdIng to North Dakota in 1892,
where he talught school for several years.

His: first one was McKitttrtibjc School near Osnabrook
where he recelived the, magnificent sum of $32.00 per m�Ii�
and boarded himself, He stayed with Mr. and Mrs. Peter
Wild. .(The Wild and Johnston families were close, neigh-
bours. in Sitariley Township),
Married Local Gilli-
In -the fall of 1895, Mr, Johnston returned to Bayfield
and, was mawried to Sarah E. Greer'in 'December. The fol-
lowing spring he took his bride to North Dakota'where he
cootinued to teach.
In, 1898, he fated on a'ftomegtead a mile north of the
present s ' ite of Nekoma—although the latter place did not
appear on the map untA 1905.'
Later they moved to this .,homestead, -and -thus joined -
that band of hardy pltarioers who chase to boave the vil
situdes of a new country to make Itheir home on North
Dakota's verdant, prairies.
Faced Many Hardslfips'
The Johnston met with all the hardships thait accomp-
any pioneeeing—loriefiness (few land distant neighbours, but
good ones), hot -summers, cold winters with blizzards, drought,
and even the loss of their home by a tornado.
But nothing daunted, they struggled on, and raised a
family of two boys and three girls.
The older son Erwin *.after -u career in the U.S. Army,
retired and se�b_dek in dewmany.
Homestead Still Produces
The younger -son, Harvey, now awns and fangs the orig-
inal homestead which his father sold in 1907 and purchased
agatin. On 1918.
When he sold the homestead in 1907, Mr. J,&mston
bought A farm a.mlle to. the south. They lived there ufitil
1948 when heand.bit Wife retired -to Nekoma, and made their
home With their daughter Grace (-Mrs. Elven Jacobsen). .
Mrs. Johnsltan, died in 1958. Another daughter, Ruby
(,Mrs. Bruce Smithl, hes with her VWter and father, and
living next door is a n4phew, Percy Parker. The third dau-
ghter, Hilda (Mrs. John, Dick), lives in; nearby Langdon.
31 Great -Grandchildren'
Mr. Johnston has 12 grandchildren -and, 31 great grand-
children.
(A grandson, Curtis Jacobsen and wife who have been
teacbers in Montana, recently visited rahotives here enroute
to :the World's Fair in New York. One of the highlights
of their weekend was to -attend service in Trinity, Church,
where his grandfather bad worshipped; also to visit the old
home farm, the neighbouring J, Wild farm, the Uproad School
of vftch he took plctvros).
Wellington E. Johnston is one of Bayfield's sons who
went out to -give leadership and culture In developing anew
world. One thinks of such 'persons With prNe ,that they
were born here.
