for reading, relaxation or conversation and a smart
addition to your garden. You can place it next to
an existing fence or create your own quiet corner
with the fence shown in the plan. Perhaps you
could tuck it around your favorite shady tree or
use it to enclose a lovely raised garden about five
feet by six feet square. Plans for this and other
simple and inexpensive projects are available from
your nearby Sylvaply dealer in the form of pamph-
lets with clear and concise instructions, and easy-
to-follow drawings.

Problem Water Plagues Residents
Of Huron And Perth County Areas
Construction of the daMs,
which have been under con-
struction for about four years,
may get underway by the end
of August this year.
There's nothing like a sturdy fort to pacify
those restless "Injuns". This one also becomes a
space capsule for a budding astronaut; a poop deck
worthy of the most fearless pirate captain; a
tree-house -to shelter any Robinson Crusoe. Here
- is the perfect alternative to traipsing to playground,
beach or lake whenyou would rather relax. And
it is remarkably simple and inexpensive to build.
A brochure containing complete plans for the con-
struction of the entire unit, including the teeter
totter, sand box and wading pool, is available free
from your nearby Sylvaply dealer. He will be
happy to furnish this and a number of other sets
of plans for fascinating and novel plywood projects.

Private and municipal water
supplies in, the area contain
traces of iron, sulphur and hard-.
pe,ss elements, says Russ Gem.-
mill, Culligan Water Condit-
ioning dealer, Goderich,
A water conditioning expert
who has served. the Huron and
Perth county .districts for the
past five years, he says problem
water is easy to spot.
"Water supply with sulphur
in it is easily detected by the
disagreeable rotten egg odor
which characterizes it," he says.
Iron Traces
"And everyone is familiar
with reddish rust ring' in poree-
lain sinks and bowls," 'he con-
tinues. This is a dead giveaway
that the water supply contains
traces of iron.
Hard Water can be detected
by the tell-tale bath-tub ring
'it leaves behind, This is caused,
by the calehtm and magnesium
deposits 'hi the water supply.
Most water in the Huron,
and Perth county areas is 20
to 30 grains hard -- the .equiv-
alent of five 'aspirin 'tablets of
dissolved rock in each gallon
of water used.
Mr. Gemmill says be has en-
countered water as hard as 122
grains in several instances
where residents were on water
supply close to Lake Huron. He
points out that this is except-
ionally high,
Wastes Soap
Hard water makes most
household chores more difficult
and requires more soap or de-
tergents 'to get clothes clean.
It is also responsible for the
limestone scale deposits found
in kettles, radiators, plumbing
pipes and hot water heaters,
All these conditions can be
corrected with the installation
of filtering or conditioning un-
its available either on a rental
or sales basis.
New Building .
Demand for conditioned Wa-
ter in Huron and Perth coun-
ties has grown so rapidly that
Mr. Gemmill recently moved
into a newly constructed two-
storey sales and service build-
ing at 376 Hayfield Road, in
Goderich.
The 2,000 square foot sales
and service area has the latest
equipment for servicing port-
able water conditioning units.
A complete line of .automatic
units is also stocked.
The new plant is headquart-
ers for regular service calls to
residents in Win.gham, Exeter,
Clinton, Seaforth, Mitchell, Lis-
towel 'and all rural areas.
One large main dam and a
smaller flood control dam lo-
cated 'to 'the south of the large,
1,100-toot-long darn are to be
built on Parkhill Creek, a trib-
utary of the Ausable River.
Complete By 1966
They are scheduled for com-
pletion in 1966.
The larger dam will be built
off the end of Highway 81, near
Parkhill Cemetery. The smaller
control dam will be built south
of the main darn between the
cemetery and the town, High-
way 81 will run along the top
of the dams.
The smaller darn will handle
the waters of a small valley
south of the main valley, and
the dams will create a water
reservoir about 21/2 miles in
length.
Twenty - three municipalities
are contributing 'to the project.
According to Authority chair.
man Freeman Hodgins, the
three largest contributors are
Bosanquet a n d McGillivray
Townships and Parkhill.
The rest of the municipalities
will pay $5,000, or less.
M. M. Dillon Company Limit-
ed, of London, are consulting
engineers for the project.
The Ontario Safety League
reports that a mathematician,
probably irritated at being held
hp by a slow-moving car, figur-
ed out a "snail's pace", liter-
ally. He clocked his snail at
.000030602 mph, on the level.
All tomes 'built ,under the
National Housing Act are in-
spected during construction to
see that the materials are of
acceptable quality 'and that 'the
construction itself is sound. -
The owner of the house under
construction may think that as
a federal government official
the Central Mortgage and
Housing Corporation inspector
is checking 'the building to pro-,
Lett ;the home owner's interests.
The inspector is first of all
malting sure that the building
when completed., will be a good
security for the money lent on
the property.
Double. Protection
Though CMHC's first ciTrice7n7
is to protect the investment
guaranteed by the Canadian
government, it goes without
saying that 'these inspections af-
ford a degree of protection to
the homeowner as well. How-
ever, ,CMHC could not begin to
make. full architectural inspect-
ions for the purchaser. If the
home owner wishes to have
an additional inspection he
should 'arrange to have this
done by some other qualified
person. The best guarantee of
a well built house is, of course,
choosing a reputable builder. No
amount of inspection will give
you the 'some satisfaction and
peace of mind as knowing that
a conscientious builder is do-
ing the work on your house,
The builder who's aim is to
build a good house realizes' that
CIVLEIC inspections serve this
same purpose and welcomes the-
visit of the' CMHC 'inspector.
