Varna UCW Meet At Taylor Home The June meeting of the United 'Church Women Was held last Thursday evening at the home of Mrs. Charles Reid. Mrs. Louis Taylor led the de- votion period on stewardship, Mrs. Robert Stirling read the scripture lesson with Mrs. Tom Consitt giving the meditation. Prayer was offered by, Mrs. Joseph Postill and the offering, prayer by Mrs. William Taylor.. The study book on India was taken by Mrs, John MeAeh end Mrs. William liecAste Twenty-seven members an- swered the roll eall. There were 18 hospital and shut-in .call's made during ,the month. Plans were made to hold a pic- nic in 'Hayfield. some, time in July, and a donation of $15 was made to the Vacation Bible School which is being held next month. . I would again suggest that this amount be written off as it is apparent that the Capital Funds does not have any money to pay off this amount, No commercial rate was levied against the taxpayers with respect to the District High Schools. There is no authority to make a pre-levy for loans under the Tile Drainage Act, In 1963 the pre-levy amount- ed to $1,171,35. Auditor's Opinion Subject to the foregoing, I report that in my opinion: (1) The financial transactions which have come un- der my notice have been within the powers of the munici- pality. e (2) The audit has been conducted in accordance with the instructions of the Department of Municipal Affairs. Any other children in the district may also enter these competitions by getting in touch with the secretary. Mrs. Frank Raithby read a letter about the coming con- vention on June 17, 18 and 19 in Guelph. It was announced the district annual will be held July 8 at Teesweter, and Mrs. Thomas Lawlor and Mrs. Gor- don R. Taylor were appointed delegates. Mrs. Robert Turner, was ap- pointed to look after the orders for dutch bulb's for spring planting and orders must be in by June 25, Mrs. Roy Easom conducted a flower contest and the winners were Mrs. Frank Raithby and second, Mrs. Mary Johnston. Gordon Taylor After 19 years of operation, Gordon R. Taylor has closed the doors of his cold storage plant because of 'the high cost of operation. Mr. Taylor said during the years an icing condition had developed in 'the insulation of the plant, and the cost would have been too high• to make renovations. The plant was built in 1945 by Brown Construction 'of Chesley, and the freezer unit was installed by Blake Refrig- eration of" London. The locker room , contained 185 individual lockers of vari- ous sizes which were in con- stant demand. Society met this week in the Community Memorial Hall with the president, Mrs, Wes Bradnock in charge. Mrs. Bradnock. welcomed 'members to their first members meeting of the year and extended a hearty welcome to the guest singers, Mrs. Ed Davies was thanked for her table display of a ban- ana tree and colored coral which she had obtained in Florida. The minutes were approved as read by the secretary, Mrs. Lloyd Humphreys, and Mrs. Bert Craig, the treasurer, gave the financial statement, Mrs. Humphreys reported the six centennial crab trees had been delivered and the Society's tree had been planted in the centre of the Ethelwyn bed. Mrs. Thomas Lawlor read an article on the tree. Mrs. Gordon R. Taylor was in charge of the floral arrange- ment contest and passed out ballots for ,bouquets judging. Prize winners were: Mrs. Mary Johnston, Mrs. William Clark, and Mrs. Russel Brindley. Hon- orable mention, Miss Viola Thompson. Mrs. Robert J. Phillips was in 'charge of the contest for naming Canada's centennial rose and had 'the ballots which the members marked as their chdice of rose. •Mrs. Phillips had the three pictures and spoke of each rose and described it fully. It was decided to enter !into the contests on the collection of leaves for children 10 years and under, the floral picture contest of dried flowers for children 11. to 16, and.
