Rambling Rh Lucy
("soy R. Wooc4).
Flies! flies! flies! Lucy has never been tormented be-.
fore by so many varieties in the spring of the year!
The first time she was sitting out in the garden; the
house flies buzzed around and followed her right into the
house. She was glad to have someone: swat the intruders.
It was the same with 'anyone outside that 'day. It
was hot and the flies swarmed about spektise, and
!another man working in the garden as 4f they had been
coated with honey. From whence did .they aria eome?
Added to 'the house fliee were the big silent ones—look
like a blue battle but difficult to track down in the house
bemuse they do not buzz.
There are' the cattle flies, horse flies, deer flies, fruit
flies, black flies and the little infinitesimal flies Which Lucy
was told came on chips from the Middle and Far East,
There they cause a great deal of eye trouble, especially
!amongst children. That is one addition to our insect life
spreading from foreign ships negotiating the, St. Lawrence
Seaway and Great Lakes, which we in Ontario could well
do Without.
The species which is causing most discomfort at the
moment is the black fly. Lucy sits in her wheel chair
enjoying the abundance of lilac bloom, the tulips, narcissi,
star-of-Bethlehems, flowering shrubs, blossoms. and the lush
green of new foliage, to say nothing of borders- of forget-
me-nots, ,gowarts and polyanthus. This old fashioned garden
- is at its best right now.
Then tihrose "dratted" black flies begin syphoning off
Lucy's life blood! She is only aware that they are distract-
ing her attention from the scenery unitl she finds a gob
of blood dried on her ear or forehead.
:Her spouse brings some insect repellent which he dabs
on the uncovered parts of her anatomy. Then what do those
flies do but crawl in under and continue their feast in
one of the fold's of her double chin! Or set on her ankles to
sip through her hose. Result: big red bumps and soiled
stockings!
Though she was never ',noted for having a "sugary"
disposition; Lucy begins to wonder if the fluid in her veins',
resembles neetar!!!!!
The time is coming She forecastS, when it will be neces-
sary rte :spray human beings as well as fruit !trees if they are
to enjoy gardening in the spring.
However, there is one comfort at • "The Hut". Several
species of fly catcher—Kingbird, Crested, Olive sided, yellow
bellied, and a Phoebe have all been identified this year.
Despite the fact that her neighbour was outraged
when she saw a, created fly catcher hop the length ,of the
clothesline on the waehing she'd just hung out, catching
'flies, Lucy hopes these bird's increase rapidly. And as far
as she 'is concerned they may invite all their kith and kin
to feast here. There are plenty of flies for all!
As Lucy writes a pair of humming birds are sucking
real nectar from the bleeding hearts, :and lilac blooms. Their
nest cannot be too far away as they appear so often,
And old Mr. Cardinal sits and looks expectantly at the
house for the sunflower seed which is no longer forthcoming.
Lucy's spouse refuses to feed a pair of purple grackles
in this nelighbourho:od„ They are exceedingly bossy and
greedy birds.
When 'they drove off :the other birds on their return
in the spring and gobbled all the feed, "Mr," just waited
until neat. dusk, put out the sunflower seed in the feeder,
and whistled, He'd no sooner be back in the house than the
cardinals 'and chickadees would 'be at the station to eat
their evening meals in peace.
But 'those grackles 'are smart! ;They soon learned that
'the whistle meant food in the feeding station, or even the
back door banging near dusk brought theni back.
That is When "Mr." quit. 'He refuses to encourage
black birds whibh will have flecks of their relatives here,
come time when cherrieS and bereies ripen.
Occasionally, on a rainy day, he does slip Mr. Cardinal
half a dozen sunflower seeds 'to 'take .to his hen nesting
somewhere down the river bank.

SMALL WONDER
Two things you ought to know about Evinrude's
new bantam size Sportwin:
It snuggles down behind your transom. It's hardly
more than transom high. Only 34" from top to skeg.
Tucks neatly. into compact car trunks.
But don't let its bantam size fool you. It packs a
real punch — 91/2 hp. And sounds even smaller than /
it looks. Come in. See it, hear it, and heft it now.
