Sales Ltd. Anglesea 'St. — GODERICH — 524-8382 Interior Design Calls For Thought In- planning the interior of a home 'the best use of space marks the skillful architect or designer. The interior of the house must be diVided accord- ing to the various functions of its occupants. The eating, sleep- ing. and living areas make up the basic divisions of every house. The difference between the various designs consists mainly in varying the size of rooms and arranging 'them in differ. ent patterns. The number ,.,of possible Sizes and groupings is practleally_.unlimited. But buy- ers also haire a wide range of preferences. One will insist on a large living room with a fire- place—another one wants a house with a family room — a separate 'dining mom is essen- tial to the way of life of a third family, while 'their neigh- bours prefer the intimacy of an eating space in the kitchen. A second bathroom, a den, lounge or sewing room, laundry facil- ities in the kitchen instead of in the basement, all these feat- ures have special meaning for certain home owners, However,. -there are • a - riurrir ber of elementary rules for good interior design. One of these basic rule4.is good circulation, that is, easy access 'to the var- ious parts of 'the house without having to cross intervening rooms. Safe stairways with sufficient head clearance, doors wide enough to move furniture m and out, space for furniture along the wall in the liVing room and bedrooms, well light- ed hallways and ample closet Space and Shelves are other "musts" in house 'designing. Heating System Vital To Home Comfort (Continued from page 7) should be well insulated, part- icularly near the heating unit. Wooden members which are directly above the furnace can be 'protected by providing suf- ficient air space between them and the furnace and covering the, top of the heating unit with asbestos. Fire .protection requ- irements for gravity air''heating systems are set out in the book "Housing Standards", With forced air beating, air is driven 'through ducts to var- ious parts of the house by an electric fan built into the heat- ing unit. This is more efficient and has largely replaced the old gravity system. Small diameter pipes or ducts --usually four inches across— do not take up as much space as ducts for gravity heating, yet carry the heated air to the various parts -of the house more efficiently, Because a fan is used to push the air, the heat- ing unit can be placed in a more convenient part of the base- ment. For best results, hot air ducts ti BATIA BEDROOM Pe- te-tr bunt Wet L DINING ROOM or-o"on•-a• ..erawaral f BEDROOM Ie-1n 10%.0. rOaid BEDR su OM -o• 1010014 0.166 ENING ROOM Aug GINO W-rest=s ASK FOR PAINT ON PROTECTION AS YOU DECORATE YOUR MASONRY WALLS MASONRY PAINT J. Illursq May 21, 1964 Clinton ,New.s,Rpcp..rd,Poge This bungalow by 'architect Jacques Vincent of Ste. Doroi. thee, Quebec, has four bed- rooms and two ,bathrooms. The 'bedroom wing is well separated from the rest of the house, and has large closets, particularly off the bedroom hall and entrance hall, A screened flagstone porch pro- vides a covered walk between the kitchen door and the gar- age. The dining room, which can be shut off from the living room by a -wood accordion door, should not be too long as a certain amount of heat is lost through the duct itself. In a bungalow with a •lange base- ment an "extended plenum", an 'extension of 'the furnace hood, is used to offset the slowing- down effect of the longer ducts. DUcts carrying heat to parts of the house remdte from the fur- nace are connected to the plen- um. Both the plenum and hot air ducts must 'be shielded with metal, asbestos board or min-. drill wool if located near in- flammable material. Hot air registers are usually placed in the floor or on 'the wall though sonic 'forced air systems' are designed to push hot air down from the ceiling.
