Bell Telephone
Adds 121 Phones
To Clinton Total
Expansion was again the key-
note for 1963 as the Bell Tele-
phone Company of Canada 'sp-
ent an unprecedented $234 mil-
lion on construction, according
to the company's 84th annual
report.
Over the past five years, Bell
has spent more than, one billion
dollars on construction.
Net income for 1963 was
$68.3 million, equivalent to $2.58
pe4' share, or a return of 6.1
percent on total capital.
After payment of $2.20 per
share in dividends, the balance
of 38 cents per share was, added
to earnings reinvested in the
business.
Over 95 percent of the mat-
erials used were produced in
Canada and many thousands of
jobs were supported among the
thousands of Canadian firms
that are Bell's suppliers.
The company added 199,472
telephones during the year,
bringing the total in service to
4,090,102.
This expansion was reflected
in Clinton where 121 telephones
were added. W. W. Haysorn,
Godettich, Bell manager for the
region, revealed that 2,103 tele-
phones were in service- here as
of December 31.
Of total shareholders, 97 per-
cent live in Canada, end own
93 percent of the stock. Em-
ployees hold 6.2 percent of the
company's stock.

with two unions representing
28;000 employees, adding about
three percent to- the annual
payroll expense. As of Decem-
ber 31, Bell employed 35,441

pany's payroll in 1963 totalled

Hensall Council
Approves Permit
For Dial Building
A building permit for a
$25,000 building, part of the
Telephone Company's plan
to convert Hartsell to dial oper-
ation this year, was approved
by councils Thursday.
The building will be located
on Highway 4 in the southeast
corner of the Village. The
changeover to dial is tentative-
ly set for November 15. Council
also approved installation of
underground cables.
No action was taken on a re-
quest from Howard Aitken, of
Goderich, a representative of
the Midwestern Ontario Devel-
opment Association, to hold a
public meeting to explain 'the
association's work. Hensall be-
longed to the ,association in
James Anglican Church, Mid,
dleton, met Wednesday after-
noon at the home of ethe presi-
dent, Mrs: Ray Wise, with 12
ladies present.
Mrs, Wise opened the meet-
Mrs. Wise also gave a detail-
ed history of the WA pin. The
Winchester Cross dates back to
the days of the Crusades, when
each group had an emblem
symbolizing their leadership.
The Knights of Hospitalers
founded a hospital near Win-
chester. They were a body of
men who tried to help others
and the WA cross is an adap-
tation of their flowered one.
It is always worn below the
left shoulder and not as a piece
of jewellery.
This information was of par-
ticular interest to the ladies
at this time as the St. James
WA recently conferred its first
WA life membership—on Mrs.
Fred Middleton, and Mrs.
1963 but has not yet decided
whether to join this year.
In other business, council:
,-'Authorized Clerk Earl Camp-
bell to seek department of high-
ways approval of the village's
road-expenditure by-law for
1964, involving an outlay of
$10,000.

weed inspectOr for 1964.

donors of the site. The school
opened in 1845 and two grand-

successful teachers there. How-
