Am happy to report that af- ter one appeal in your "Art- icles Wanted" advertisement, I was fortunate enough to •get the photo wanted for pOpying purposes from Mr. and Mrs. Henry Clew, long time friends. The "Ad" also brought forth letters from former neighbours of yesteryear, renewing fond memories of Auld Lang Syne. Thank you all for writing me. The newspaper is certainly a wonderful media for contacting people who have what you want. Jean Mason, 723 Queens Ave., London, Ont. Vbrallan. TON MITI; — W. O. Mitchell As in his earlier novel "Who HaS Seen The -Wincl?"—W. 0, Mitchell has ,iroduced .an. un .forgetable story, The setting is a small town in the Alberta foothills and Mitchell .exceliS in portraying characters who live in a small close-knit com- munity, David Lang, free-lance journ- alist and TV 'panelist, is .com, missioned to write a profile of "Daddy" Sherry • of Shelby, Alta., who would celebrate his 111th birthday in a few •weeks. The oldest living nerson in Canada ,"Daddy" is Older 'than Canada and ibelieved to he the oldest person in the world, and Mayfair lVfagezine was willing to -send -Lang fOr an intimate interview • with the old man, Lang had spent his boyhood years in Alberta .and some of the memories return'to him as• he travels westward, especially the remembrance of the time that he. almost flew the birth- day kite. • Setbacks such as a roam in the small hotel over the beer parlor; the frustration of not "getting 'through" to "Daddy" Sherry at the first interview are enough to make him plan an immediate return to Mont- real. Fortunately his sense of journalism assures 'him that there is a real story in "Daddy" Sherry. • The story is nicely balaneed, narrating the • present time events concerning the plans for the public observance of "Dad- dy's" 'birthday and some of the intidents from his memory of over 100 years. He recall's facts and anecdotes from the days of the Fenian Raids, The Riel Rebellion, the , Boer War — oh. yes "Daddy" says he can prOve that he is really Hi because the records at Goderich prove 'that he was born 'three miles east of Bayfield, in Huron County. No one could expect a time sequence in the life story • of. John Felix "Daddy" Sherry. His mind of 'the day, a stray word or phrase- would start a flood of reminiscences. Lang.gathered these stories and worked over them carefully, thoughtfully. There seemed • to be one note- worthy incident omitted and he always failed to prod some- one into relating it—something Correspondent Mrs. Bert Allan , The Women's Institute met on Thursday and the president opened the meeting with 'the Ode and Mary Stewart Collect followed by a Valentine poem. Correspondence and thank- you cards were read including a letter from the little Chinese protege in response to a Christ- mas gift parcel sent from the WI. Thomason were appointed to act on the nom- inating committee for April. The motto was taken by Mrs. Robert Fairservice who gave a splendid paper on the life of Pauline Johnston, poetess. Roll call was answered, by naming a place or country one would like to visit, Mrs. Carson gave an inter- esting outline of the education- al system practised in North- ern Ireland and Barbara Burn's favored with several numbers on her accordion.
