Not The' Same
No, the smoke doesn't go Up the chimney just
the same . . . at least at Sherlock-Manning Co. Ltd.,
where extensive alterations have been made to elim-
inate the soot and smoke nuisance which has drawn
complaints in the past from area residents. This
photo was taken while the large furnace was com-
pletely operating, and not even a trace of dirty soot
can be spotted. An engineer has reported that the
new setup at the local plant would comply with any
bylaw in North America regarding air pollution.

"And they have a very rigid
bylaw," he added.
He commended the local firm
for taking advantage of the
free service offered by his firm
to overcome their problem.
"We were very grateful to
get it," replied D. M, Pegg,
a company executive.
1Wr. Pegg did not give an
estimate of the cost involved in
the renovation and new systeM,
but stated, 'it was eN-Pensive
enough"
However, while the change
will undoubtedly be beneficial
to neighbors, indications are
that it may also benefit the
company and in fact pay for
itself.
Mr, Austin predicted the coal
consumption—which runs to ap-
proximately 600 tons per year--
may be reduced as much as 10
to 15 percent.
Attending the inspection, and
enjoying a tour of the plant
were: Reeve Morgan Agnew,
Councillors Duff Thompson and
H. F, Noonan and Clerk John
Livermore.
Mr. Pegg and Caryl Draper
showed the local men and 'the
several engineering representa-
tives through the plant, which
employs about 40 men and pro-
duces up to 700 pianos a year.
Inspect New System
Members of Clinton council were invited to
SherlOck-Manning Piano Co. Ltd. last week to
inspect the major alterations which have been made
to the heating system at the plant to curtail soot.
D. M. Pegg, centre, is shown here pointing out the
new automatic coal-feeding device to E. A. Austin,
right, of Waterloo Coal Co, Ltd., and Reeve Morgan
Agnew. The automatic system carries the coal'
from the bin and feeds it under the flame, thereby
ensuring a hotter fire that burns up the smoke and
soot. (News-Record Photo)
"This setup • would comply
with any bylaw 'in North Anter-
ica,"
This was the statement issu-
ed by P. J. Killaby an engineer
and general manager of the Bi-
turninons Coal Institute of
Canada, as he inspected the re-
cent work undertaken by Sher-
lock-Manning Piano Co. Ltd.-to
eradicate the soot nuisance
which has brought complaints
front residents in the area of
thr. local company.
Mr. Killaby, whose main job
is to engineer improvements to
end smoke and soot nuisance
for coal burning companies,
made his inspection last Wed-
nesday afternoon.
Also present were members
of Clinton council, executives
of the piano firm and a repre-
sentative of the Waterloo Coal
Co. Ltd., B. A, Austin:
Mr, Austin explained to the
cg uncil representatives that
work was now completed on the
Sherlock-Manning project and
the new setup was "working ex-
ceptionally well".
"They have installed the best
equipment 'they could buy," he
noted, "and have done every-
thing they could" to end the
soot nuisance.
To back up his statement,
he noted that there was no soot
evidentin the fresh snow
around the piano firm's smoke
stack.
To attain the results, the me-
thod of firing the large ,furnace
at the factory was completely
altered and an 'automatic feed-
ing device was installed to re-
place• the previous hand-feed-
ing system.
Coal is delivered to the plant,
dumped into a large bin, and
from it is fed automatically in,-
to the furnace by an auger run-
ning beneath the pile of coal.
This method has many ad-
vantages over the previous sys-
tem, the main one being that
a "hotter" fire is produced and
the smoke and soot is burned
off, rather than going up the
smoke stack as before.

The Siirling brothers, Fraser
and Douglas, visited their mo-
ther, Mrs. J. R. Stirling in Wes-
ton; and also their brother,
Jack, in Toronto.
A local party of hunters,
eluding Bob and Bill McIlwain,
gathered at Dutton for a pow
wow. The 'boys did well last
season, shooting two moose one,
deer and a bear.
Charles Wilson, after being
under the weather since the
first of the year, is getting ab-
out again. His son Barry, who
has the pioneer Lindsay farm
on the Huron Road at the 16th
Concession, has disposed of 24
of his dairy cows but has a
sizeable herd left. Besides farm-
ing, Barry has taken on a Bart-
liffs Bakery route.
Alex Weston, having put
away his gas vehicle for the
winter, was in Clinton Thurs-
day travelling by taxi.
With the automatic feeding,
there is a true balance of coal
and, oxygen being delivered to
the fire and the coal is fed und-
er the fire bed, rather than
shovelled on top,
Mr. Austin and lVir. Killaby
explained that this balance of
coal and oxygen produced the
same results as one notes when
welding.
When the components are in
balance, there is a clean flame,
but when the oxygen is reduced
dirty, black flame.
By feeding coal automatical-
ly, the door does not have to
be open to allow the plant en-
gineer to add to the• supply, so
again this results in a hotter
fire which burns up all the re-
fuse.
The local factory still burns
the shavings -and other waste
material from the construction
of their products, but this is
shovelled onto the side of the
fire and is' completely burned
up.
Killaby, who reported his
firm's service was available to
any firm, reported the altera-
tions at Sherlock - Manning
would, be well within the regu-
lations required by the City of
Toronto in regard to their pol-
lution control.
