farmers were warned .yesterday
not to plant sugar beets. this
spring on ground that was
treated with atrazine last year.
Richard Frank, a herbicides
expert art the Western Ontario
Agricultural School here said
because of the extremely dry
fall, farmers would face losing
a large percentage of their crop
if. it is planted in ,atrazine
treated ground.
He was speaking at the sec-
ond day's session of the
Farmers' Week program, devot-
ed to beans, soybean's and sug-
ar beets covering weed control,

List Suggestions
To Aid Students
The SS No. 4 Goderich
Township Farm Forum met
this week at the home of Mr.
and Mrs. Donald Lobb, with
11 members present.
This was review night, and
the question was on education.
The question to the adults was:
"How can you assist your chil-
dren td get the training they
need for suitable careers?"
Answer: (1) ,Encourage them
to attend 'school as long as
possible.
(2) Assist students financial-
ly if possible.
(3) Take and interest in as-
suring adequate education fac-
ilities.
For recreation, "500" was
played and a pot-luck lunch
was served by the ladies.
The next meeting will be held
at the ;home of Mr. and Mrs.
Jack Merrill.
varieties,
Atrazine, a relatively new
chemical for weed control in
corn, is used extensively in
Southwestern Ohtario's corn
belt and has no damaging ef-
fects on corn.
Mr. Frank said Southwestern
Ontario farmers have become
the world's largest users of at-
razine and recommended its
continued use for weed control
in corn.
Using results of tests con-
ducted at the WOAS and on
area farms, Mr. Frank said
residual effects from atrazine
can also have a detrimental ef-
fect on tomatoes and white
beans, if applied too heaVily.
There seems to be no adverse
effect on oats, he said,
Granular atrazine has been
banned from the U.S. market
and is expected to be with-
drawn in Canada, Mr. Frank
said.
.• The granular material seems
to have a more harmful effect
than the liquid form used in this
area, he said.
Mr. Frank said a new chemi-
cal, known as PCA will be
available for about 1,000 acres
of sugar beets this year to com-
bat broadleafs and grass.
He said it is not expected to
present any residual effects.
The 'two main insects found in
field beans ^ were discussed by
R. H. Brown, WOAS entomolo-
gist. He said seed corn maggot
and the leaf hopper can be con-
trolled cheaply with either ma-
lothion, sevin, or DDT.
Mr. Brown said if the bean
straw is to be used for live-
stock, farmers should not use
DDT as it may have' a harmful
effect on the livestock.

January 11, 1964
In your January 2 edition of
this paper you printedd-a letter
from "Tite-Wad". I wish to
give my full support to "The-
Wad" and give him a pat on
the back. This was a very edu-
cational letter, written about a
very important matter.
To are this is the height of
ignorance as 'these 'teachers and
department heads are paid far
more than they earn or are
worth, This is proven by the
number of pupils who drop out
after one year or a part of a
year of 'high school.
No doubt this is not all the
teachers' fault but a great
amount must be placed on their
Nurses Group
Plans Survey
Amid Ranks
The Registered Nurses' As-
sociation of Ontario has come
under attack in a series of ar-
ticles published by the Globe
and Mail on December 12, 13.
and 14, and -the following is a
statement by Jennie M. Weir,
president, Registered Nurses'
Association of Ontario, with the
unanimous 'support of the board
of directors:
In general, the Association
has been charged with not act- •
ing in the interests of the
nursing profession. In support
the writer of the articles cites
Opinions which she contends
are representative of members
of the profession. •
We are compelled to take a
most serious view of the char-
ges made and have therefore
decided to retain an indepen-
dent research organization' to
conduct a thorough and broad.-
ly representative study of opin-
ion of 'the registered nurses in
Ontario in specific regard to
their professional organization,
the Registered Nurses of
tario,
We are going to require this
study be 'done: with all possible
dispatch consistent with thor-
oughness and objectivity. Fur-
ther, we have decided to under-
take now to Make public the
report of this research study
in its entirety regardless of 'its
conclusions.
Copies will be provided to
the 32,000 members of the AS-
soeiation and they Will be asked
'to judge and take whatever
action might be indicated,
shoulders, They have all the
modern facilities 'in Which to
practise their trade bat year
after year more and more first
and second form students fail
to continue school. But this is
getting away from the subject.
I don't know of one factory
worker who .gets his coffee free
and they, are only paid on an
hourly basis whiCh wouldn't
amount to $4,000 a year. It's
too bad that a teacher making
double this and more cannot
pay for 'his coffee.
The next thing we • know
they will be 'asking - the tax-
payers to send a taxi for them
to ride to and from school and
then it will be wheel chairs
from the taxi to school and
down the halls , to their rooms.
After such a strenuous morn-
ing so far, surely they would
be entitled toejieedown for a-
while before the hard and lab-
orious task of 'teaching is begun.
I don't say this will happen,
but this is wn'at St 1ooks like to
me, and I am only one of the
tax-payers having to put 'up
with this.
Well, hare's another pat on
the back for 'Tite-Wad" and, I
hope there will be many more
like him, as these people are
few and far between.
Sincerely,
—IN APPRECIATION
TO TITE-WAD
