arrived,
Nancy laughingly pointed out
that this was not really the
custom in Ontario, but had been
due to the fact that the guests.
Were only able to stay for a
short time,
Commenting on the FLQ
Terrorists, Catherine emphat-
ically pointed out that these
People should not be confused
with the popular Separatist
movement in Quebec,. t
",They are bad beefs", she
stated in explanation of the
Terrorists,
Reporting that the
callers 4$ soon as they had list ,movement was very PPPPlar
in her area, etie added that
Most people had, the feeling
that Quebec was still too 57.014ng
to pull away from the rest Of
Carieda.
When asked what Ontario
residents could de to foster bet-
ter relations with the French
speaking neighbors, she said
they should speak French ,as
well as English.
She noted that many more
people in Quebec., could speak
English than there were French
epealting citizens in Ontario.
One of the reasons for this
is that many of the TV and
radio programs in Quebec are
in English, while there are
very, very few French pro-
grams in Ontario.
Nancy stated that while in
Quebec, ehe had watched
"Leave It To Beaver" in French,
and while she had an idea of
what the theme was, ,,cotild pick
up very little of 'the conversa-
tion.
Concluding t h e interview,
Catherine said she had found
Ontario residents very friendly,
and both girls, reported the ex-
change visit had been very en-
joyable and educational.

proved invaluable at the home
of Mr, and Mrs, Breek OJde
and family last week, when
they played host to 4 YoUng
Quebec girl, Catherine Caron.
A resident of the village of
BaieedeS-Sables, Catherine was
repaying a visit made to her
home by Nancy Olde, a grade
13 student at. CHSS.
The exchange visit was ar-
ranged for the two girls
through "Visites Interprevin-
piales", a scheme set up to pro-
mote better understanding be-
tween high echool students in.
Ontario and Quebec and also
to give the students an oppor-
tunity to practice speaking the
language of their neighboring
province.
On Friday, Nancy kindly
escorted her guest to the News-
Record, where with the aid of
the well-worn dictionary, Cath-
erine described some of her
impreesions of the visit.
One of 15 children in a fam-
ily described as "about normal
size", Catherine is 21 and is a
school teacher, having entered
a one-year course after com-
pleting grade 12.
She explained that this al-
lowed her to teach any grade
up to seven, and had she re-
mained to get her grade 13, she
would have been permitted to-
teach up to grade 10 level.
Following her stay here, she
planned to visit a sister in Lon-
don, and reported she hoped to
be able to secure a position as
a French teacher.
She noted that one of the
greatest differences between
schools in the two provinces is
that in Quebec the boys and
girls are separated throughout
all their elementary and sec-
ondary school training.
Talk Too Quickly
Both girls had the same com-
plaint of each other—they talk-
ed too quickly.
Although they both have a
good vocabulary in the other's
tongue, they found that a lack
of practicing conversation in
school made it almost impos-
sible for them to follow the
family conversation in the re-
spective homes.
It was interesting to note as
well that schools in Quebec
started to teach English to
students in grade five, while
most students in Ontario don't
start to study French until
they have reached grade nine.
They also noted some prob-
lems in prenounciation from
what they hail been taught in
their respective schools and
what was actually spoken in
