Midgets Oust New Hamburg Crew,
Meet Meaford for WOAA Crown
General Electric
Clinton Fish and Game mid-
gets battled their way into the
WOAA finals, Thursday, drub-
bing New Hamburg 13-6 to
win the best-of-three set in
two straight games,
They open their final series
with Meaford at the local dia-
mond today (Thursday) with
the game slated to get under-
way at 5:00 p.m. Second game
is in Meaford on Saturday.
It will be the third straight
year that Meaford and Clinton
teams have battled in a playoff
set for the WOAA champion-
ship, and many players on
both teams have seen action in
the other two series.
Meaford was ousted the last
two years by the Fish and
Game bantams and the boys
will be going all out to make
it three in a row this year,
While they haven't lost to
Meaford, the locals have al-
ways had to play their best
and manager Percy Livermore
said he' expected the Northern-
ers to be strong again ,this
year.
Unleash Power
In New Hamburg, the locals
unleashed some of their heavy
artillery to pound out the con-
vincing win. While they had
only eight hits, three, of them
were triples and another was
-a home run.
Leadoff man Bob Batkins
-started them on their way
when he drew a walk in his
first appearance and crossed
the plate on a sacrifice by Jim
Livermore and a long fly by
Laurie Colquhoun.
The home crew knotted the
count in their half of the frame
-as Doug McPherson had control
problems and issued three
walks, but his mates gave him
a four-run bulge in the second
and that was all the cushion
he needed as he allowed only
four hits in the contest.
Clarence Magee started the
second inning splurge with a
walk and John Cooper followed
his example to put two men
on, and after Larry Pickett
sacrificed them to third and
second respectively, Charles
Switzer boomed out a ,long
triple to send them scampering'
home.
Switzer came home on a New
Hamburg player's error on Mc-
Pherson's grounder and he
moved 'around the base path8
on a single by Batkin and an-
other New Hamburg error.
After McPherson sent the
,New Hamburg lads down in
order in the second, Clinton
plated six more tallies in the
third to take complete control
or the game.
Magee started it off again
with a single and John Coop-
er blasted out a triple to send
him home, Switzer walked and
McPherson reached first on an
error and Livermore also hit
safely, setting the stage for
Laurie Colquhoun's home run
clout to account -for the last
of the six markers.
N e w Hamburg scored two
unearned runs in the fourth on
a pair of Clinton errors and
Ferguson's double, but Clinton
got one of those back in the
fifth when McPherson .walked
and came home on a single
by Livermore and they worked
the score to 13-4 in the sixth
when Magee walked and came
in on a triple by Switzer; his
second of the game.
Playing in darkness in the
last frame, New Hamburg pot-
ted a couple of runs on two
hits, but McPherson recorded
two strikeouts in the frame to
earn the win.
He sent 11 batters back to
the bench via the strikeout
route in the contest, and he
accounted for three runs, al-
though he failed to hit safely'
once.
Switzer paced the batters
with his two triples, while Liv-
ermore also had two safeties
in two official trips to the
plate.
Magee scored three runs as
well on only one hit, but he
managed to steal three bases in
the encounter.
The local box score was as
follows:
