Due to the fact their disdain for washing
dishes is over-balanced by their pleasure of eating,
members of the Clinton Boy Scouts find kitchen
duties at their summer camp a "necessary evil",
However, by employing this simple "Iroquois Kit-
chen", the lads at least don't have to worry about
scrubbing floors this week. Shown hanging their
pots and pans to dry in the sun are the members
of the "Bushmen", from the left: HarOld Newland,
Don Beck, Larry Mercer, Kenneth Hamilton and
Peter Black.

Rambling With, Lucy
(icy 'WQ(*).
When a gentleman who has seen Canada from Vancouver
to Newfoundland, up the Eastern Arctic. to Churchill and
Southampton Island, and the West Coast to the Yukon and
Alaska, And ,chooses Payfie/d in which to retire, it makes
one very proud to be a native .of the village!
And Lucy could fairly feel the set bones in her chest
breaking out . with pride when she asked Brigadier F.
Clift if she might quote .11411 as saying that he know the.
East Coast of Lake Huron and chose Bayfield in which to
retire, and received this answer;
ocertainfy .I picked this place because the Payfield people
Are obviously ,proud of their villaqe an ci look after it. The
streets are so -clean. and the gardene §.(p 110y,"
Brigadier and Mrs. F. A, Clift moved from Ottawa on
July 25 to take lip- residence in their home on Clan Gregor
Square which. they purchased this spring from John MacKenzie,
Born in Meifort, Saskatchewan., Brigadier Clift has had
a wide experience in life, He was '4 banker with the Royal
Bank of Canada and a teacher,
In 1939. he WAS, principal of the M.eltort Continuation
School and taught grades VIII to Senior Matriculation him,
Self,
Mrs. Chit was formerly Miss Margaret Smith whose
parents emigrated from Seotland, to Winnipeg and later settled
near Melfort,
They have three children; Miss Barbara Cliff who is an
economist in the Dominion Bureau of Statistics, Ottawa; Ger-
ald, a Captain in the Queen's Own Rifles, serving in Germany,
and Garth, living in Whitehorse, Yukon Territories,
Brigadier Clift retired in Ottawa in July .after/40 years
with the Militia and regular army. He rose from the ranks.
Joining the militia in 1923, he was made Corporal in
1924. He went overseas with the Saskatoon Light Infantry
as 2nd Lieutenant in 1939, with which he ,served for three
years.
Then he took command of the South Saskatchewan Regi-
ment and 'took them into Normandy. He was made a
Brigadier in the field, was wounded, later returned again to
service and was wounded a second time: He spent months
in .hospital and for this reason he reduced his rank to Lieuten-
ant coinnel to join the service again in British Columbia.
He attended Canadian Army Staff College at Kingston
and then was Chief of Staff at Headquarters, Prairie Com-
mand, Winnipeg, from 19474949; Director of Military Train-
ing, Army Headquarters, Ottawa, 1949-1951; attended the
Imperial Defence College, England, for 11/1, years, 1951-1952
when his wife and family accompanied him,
Returning to Canada, Brigadier Clift took command of
a brigade in Wainwright, Alberta and took it to Korea in
1954 for seven months.
Returning again to Canada, he Was Director General of
Army Personnel at Army Headquarters, Ottawa, 1954-1958,
then he was appointed to the Command of Western Ontario
area, at London in 1958-1961. •
' This included the Huron area and he was also at the
Cadet Camp at Ipperwash, so he became well acquainted
with the eastern shore of Lake Huron up to Tobermory. '
He did a tour 'of duty in the Far East in Indo-China,
His wife and daughter- joined him at the end of it in Hong
Kong and they came back via Europe, enjoying the trip
around the world.
After all, it's surprising how small is this old world.
Brigadier Cliffs grandmother was born in Durham, Ontario,
and Lucy's grandmother and mother both came from the
same spot. And this is responsible for the complete story
of his career.
