The young cowboys and 'cowgirls from the

many of the small fry obViously thought the
rides were too short, there were others who gave
the impression they were glad to get off their

After hearing five witnesses
testify in Stratford on Friday,
Magistrate A. F. Cook com-
mitted Grant B. Webster, RR
1, Varna, for trial at the next
competent sittings, of a judge
with jury as the accused bad
elected at a previous appear-
ance.
Webster was charged with
dangerous driving in connec-
tion with a traffic accident on
March 25 on Highway No. 8
just west of Mitchell which
took the life of Herbert Stev-
enson of Toronto.
Magistrate Cook heard five
witnesses testify at the prelim-
inary hearing before deciding
that there was sufficient evi-
dence to commit the accused
for trial.
In prosecuting the case, act-
ing crown attorney W. G.
Cochrane called Scott Powell,
RR 2, Seaforth, as his first wit-
ness.
Foggy Conditions
During the examination,
Powell testified that he was
driving east on Highway 8 on
the morning of the accident.
He described the conditions as
foggy, and although it was day-
light at the time, he had his
headlights on.
Mr. Powell stated that he
was traveling between -40 and
45 miles per hour when he ob-
served a car come up behind
him some distance from where
the accident occurred. The car
made two attempts to pass
him, stated •Mr. Powell, but

he saw the' front end go down
before hearing a crash.
• Lights On
At the time of the crash, he
estimated the visibility to be
about 200 feet and stated that
the on-coming car had its head-

Mr. Powell stated that he

The reception was held in the
church parlours and the bride's
mother received guests wearing
a brocaded beige sheath with
brown accessories and a yellow
rose corsage.
She was assisted by the gr-
oom's mother, who chose a
brown lace dress with beige
accessories and a corsage of
yellow roses.,
For a wedding trip to Boston
for two weeks, the bride don-
ned a' light blue sheath and
jacket of peau de sole, offset
with white accessories.
They will make their home
on Princess Street, Clinton.
The bride will be a meinber
of the teaching staff at Clin-
ton Public School, The groom
and two companions then phon-
ed the police and proceeded to
stop cars coming towards the
accident.
In cross-examination by Mr.
Webster's lawyer, Mayer Lern-
er, London, Mr. Powell said
the car had been following him
for about one mile at a distance
up to 17 to 19 feet. He added.
that the density of the fog
varied at times.
A passenger in the Powell
vehicle, Jim Strong, RR 2, Sea-
forth, stated that traffic on the
morning in question was light
and that the fog at the time of
the collision was fairly thick.
Mr. Strong said he did not see
the eastbound car until it was
about 75 feet ahead.
About 100 Feet
Junior Storey, Seaforth, told
the court that he ,was driving
a milk truck along 'Highway 8
on that particular morning
when he was flagged down by
Strong and Powell. He esti-
mated the vision at the scene
of the accident at about 100
feet.
Const. Kenneth Armstrong of
the Sebringville OPP was also
called to the stand and he
identified eight photographs
that he took at the scene of
the accident.
Const. Glen Mueller of the
Sebringville OPP, who investi-
gated the accident, told the
court that he measured skid
marks for 48 feet from the
.west-bound car and 68 feet
from the east-bound car. He
added that the pavement was
wet and would be slippery if
brakes were applied hard.
The officer said that the skid
marks from the west-bound car
were located 18 inches north of
the broken centre white line
while the skid marks from the
Webster vehicle showed the car
skidded from the west-bound
lane to a spot a short distance
over the white line.
Const. Mueller stated under
cross-examination that there
was no fog in Sebringville when
he received the call but that he
ran into' it around Mitchell,
operates Beattie Furniture and
works with his father in the
Beattie Funeral Home business.
Prior to her wedding the
bride was honored at several
showers and parties. Among
these were:
A linen shower at the home
of the bride's aunt, Mrs. John
Robinson, Zurich;
Miscellaneous showers at the
home of another aunt, Mrs.
Don Colquhoun, RR, 5 Clinton,
