For scholarships and hnrsar-
ies, $3,100 remains the alloca-
tion, but the matter of scholar-

versify of Waterloo was left in
abeyance until thp 1954 budget
is prepared.
The committee recommended
no action on a request from the
Wingham Trade and Agricul-
tural Fair for a grant.
On May 22 a delegation from
Huron Holstein Club appeared
before the finance and execu-
tive committee,
Communications read an
Monday were from Seaforth,
Exeter and Kirkton
Societies and Belgrave
School Fair.
"We are of the opinion that
fall fairs are playing an im-
portant role in promoting agri-
culture in Canada," stated the
.Seaforth letter. "People are
given the opportunity to see
some of the best livestock and
this also applies to the general
section of our fairs. They de-
serve all the encouragement we
can give them. With the rising
cost of operating fall fairs we
feel it is a very inopportune
time to set back the grant paid
by the county."
"Concerned" with the pend-
ing recommendation of the
committee, the Exeter society
stressed the usefulness of small
fairs in promoting understand-
ing between rural and urban
people and in general in mak-
ing Huron a better place in
which to live.
"Doing good work with the
4-H clubs," Kirkton fair board
pointed out that it is riot spend-
ing much on classes open to
professionals. There have been
three winners of 'the Queen's
Guineas by persons who got a
start in 4-H Clubs. The board
,is "very disappointed that
county council` is considering
reducing the annual grant."
Belgrave expressed a hope
council will see fit to consider
the annual grant.

Assessment Up
Again This Year
Across County
GODERICH—There has been
an assessment increase in every
Huron municipality since the
1962 report, county assessor A.
A. Alexander told county coun-
cil. The increases, $1,061,759,
bring the county total to
$63,390,020.
No outstanding increases are
noted, in comparison with the
previous year. Population of
the county, as published earlier
is given as 50,021.
"I am not including any fig-
ures. where a grant in lieu of
taxes has been made," Mr,
Alexander explained, "as the
clerk is required to add these
to the equalization figures of
the current year."
Fixed assessments include:
Colborne, $10,400 on United and
Baptist church camps; Goderich
township, $5,000 on Salvation
Army camp; Hullett, $700 on
a Presbyterian camp; Stanley,
$6,400 on Anglican church
camp; Clinton, Exeter, Gode-
rich and Wingham, fixed as-
sessment on Legion halls, and
in Seaforth $28,000 on a shoe
pIarit, the last of this kind to
be put through before the law
was amended.

lows, with last year's in brack-
ets: Clinton, $2,604,304 ($2,518,-
