It would seem that there will be another considerable increa- se in corn production with the addition mainly in grain corn production. Why is this trend proceeding so steadily? I suppose we can attribute this to the energy and determination of those who de- velope new and better varie- ties of crops. In this case it is grain corn that has been greatly improved. Strains haVe been produced which give amazing yields in greatly extended areas. Along with our ability to grow corn we have been given the knowledge necessary to ba- lance our livestock rations so that we can produce more and better meat products. On two previous years I pick- ed a few rows of corn. For a month or so I threw a few cobs to the pigs. They liked the cobs and seemed to do well and I put then back on good mixed grain chop hoping that a few weeks on corn wouldn't make me guilty of producing those fat, greasy slobs of pigs that the American corn belt farmers have been raising, Last fall a different situat- ion developed. I had three acres of pretty good cob corn left after filling the silo. Those three acres produced a bigger heap of corn cobs than I had ever thought pos- sible. I had one bunch of pigs ab- out half way to market and. another bunch just started. That heap of cobs meant a lot more than a few weeks feeding. After quite an argument with my consience and after using a promise to double the Arthur K. Spragge AUBURN—A resident of the Nile district ,for a few years, Arthur K. More corn, more hogs — at what price? A Matter of Principle (By J. CARL HEMINGWAY) concentrate in the chop, I was allowed to feed a fifty per- 'cent corn ration, I wasn't too happy but the hogs were and went to market in a very satisfactory time. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the grade was better than I expected. By the time the second bunch were ready for market our .locker was getting empty and I had only corn fed hogs available. I didn't like the idea but couldn't very well justify sel, ling pork that I wouldn't eat myself. To make a long story short, one of our pigs ended up with the local butcher and event- ually found it's way to our locker. We were amazed / to find that we had excellent pork.
