A deadly insecticide, Thimet,
will probably be used by many
bean growers in the area this
year to fight, the increasing in-
cidence of the Mexican Bean
Beetle and the Leafhopper.
Over 40 farmers from the
Kippen-Bayfield - Varna - Clin-
ton area attended a meeting in
the agriculture board rooms,
last Friday, to hear a report on
the new insecticide.

Barrie Volkers of Cyanamid
manufacturing the product, not-
ed that the bean industry was
very lucrative in this area, but
said unless the Mexican Bean
Beetle was checked, it could
cause serious threat to the en-
tire industry in the county.
Volkers noted there were oth-
er effective sprays to fight the
of Canada, the firm which is
beetle but most of them were
applied too late, as they de-
pended upon the egg masses
being spotted before spraying
could commence.
Thimet is a systemic insec-
ticide and is applied in the row
to the side of the bean seed
at planting time, and its prop-
erties are absorbed by the
plant to give it built-in pro-
tection until it is harvested, el-
iminating the necessity to
identify the beetle before any
controls can be started.
Besides providing an effective
control against the Mexican
Bean Beetle, the new insecti-
cide also controls Leafhoppers,
seed corn maggots, aphids and
mites.
Dangerous Product
Ken Grant, also of Cyanamid
of Canada, told the farmers
that one of the main problems
with Thimet is its application,
due mainly to the fact it is so
deadly.
However, he noted that with
proper care there was no reason
It should create any problems
or trouble.
The insecticide must be ap-

farmers interested in acquiring
the product with their fertilizer
work through either of the two
men so it could be controlled
easily.
He noted the fertilizer firms
should not be asked to mix the
product more than once and a
deadline of May 1 was set for
any farmers wishing the serv-
ice.
It was decided at the meet-
ing that 20 pounds of Thimet
would be applied in 100 pounds
of fertilizer and the fertilizers
to be used would be 10-10-10
or 16-8-8, with farmers adding
more ingredients to bring up
to their personal requirements.
Miles, who noted the beetle
was a serious problem in the
Bayfield area, pointed out the
farmers now knew the cost and
if they weren't, losing t h a t
much on the insect attacks,
they should forget about using
it.
"I'm worried about it
though," Miles added in refer-
ence to the beetle which first
invaded the area about f i v e
years ago.
He noted there were other
controlling sprays, but pointed
out that timing was a difficult
problem and spraying on many
farms had been left too late
in the past.

erating area.
Mix In Fertilizer
The farmers held a lengthy
discussion on how to apply the
product, and due to the, fact
most sew their seed with a seed
drill, it was recommended it
be mixed with the fertilizer.
Grant estimated 15 pounds of
Thimet should be applied per
acre with the fertilizer, while
only 12 pounds would be need-
ed for farmers with special ap-
plicators on their machinery.
Don Turner of Chemical Sp-
ecialties, who will handle the
distribution, reported the cost
at 39 cents per pound or $5.85
per acre for 15 pounds.
Bob Taylor, RR 3, Clinton,
representing Elmira Fertilizers
which is produced by Read
Brothers, Exeter, reported his
company would, be willing to
mix the product into fertilizer
lots for farmers.
Later in the meeting, Alec
MacBeath, representing Hensall
District Co - Operative, stated
his firm would also provide the
same service.
Doug Miles, agriculture rep-
resentative, noting the product
was dangerous, asked that all
