Feb, 21, 1963•.Clinfen .News-Record- ',age 5 Detroit Mites Win RCAF Event, Both Clinton Clubs Lose in Finals Players on seven area Mite hockey clubs obviously enjoyed the thrill. of playing with the sons of two Detroit Red Wing stars .at RCAF Clinton, Satur- day, ,and were even so polite they .allowed the Detroit six to walk off with the grand pion trophy. However, the Detroit squad had much to say about the disposition of the silverware as they .came through with three lopsided wins to cap the event. Towering over many of their Canadian counterparts, the Am- erican pucksters displayed a good brand of hockey to have things much their own way, Gerry Sawchuck, son of Red Wing goalie, Terry Sawchuck, proved to be a "chip off the old block" as he didn't allow a goal in any of the three games. While he didn't have many difficult shots to handle, the youngster displayed some of the abilities apparently passed on by his father. The showy little netminder even picked up an assist on one of his team's goals in the RCAF tournament. Detroit's immortal "number nine" was proudly worn by Mark Howe and he also show- ed a resemblance to his father as he banged in several goals in the RCAF tournament, and was .standout. His brother, Marty, also play- ed well in the all-day event. Drub Opposition In, being the first team to have their name on the W/C Vinnecombe trophy, the Detroit squad started out in the tour- ney with a 4-0 win over a scrappy Forest crew, who later went on to annex the consola- tion cup. Forest provided the stiffest competition of the day for the American squad, but Mark Howe flipped a puck into the open corner in the first period and then set up the second goal to pace his squad to their win. In their second• outing they were pitted against Goderich, who had earlier sidelined Exe- ter by a slim 3-2 margin, and the Salt town crew were no match as they dropped an 11-0 decision. The championship game pit- ted Detroit against the RCAF Clinton six, who had earlier ousted Clinton and Zurich, and they provided little opposition either, coming out on the short end of a convincing 12-0 score. Mike Chapman paced the De- tenclance and enjoyed an even- ing of euchre. During the evening, the cele- brants were presented with a lovely gift, after which lunch was served. The couple's 16 grandchildren were present and also their sons and daughters, accompan- ied by their husbands and wives. Included were: Mr. and Mrs. Ellwood (Dorothy) Storey, Till- sonburg; Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd (Myrel) Storey, Stratford; Mr. and Mrs. Jack (Ethel) Boden, Woodstock; Mr. and Mrs. Bill (Grace) Stephenson, Sarnia; Mr. and Mrs. Carl Bender, Stratford and Mr. and Mrs. Ray Bender,' Clinton. 0 Attend Rally At Collingwood The Clinton Kingdom Hall will be closed this coming weekend as members of the local congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses move to Collingwood to enjoy Christian fellowship with others of the same faith. The semi-annual circuit assemb- ly in Collingwood will provide a complete program designed to assist us in our community service," he continued. Mr. James Hopper and his wife from Clinton will be among those who will journey to Collingwood for this conven- tion. trait attack in this one with five goals, while Mark Howe added four.
