The discussion arose after Superintendent Rands reported there was close to $1,200 Plying on sewerage accounts. "Some of them are well over 60 days overdue", he noted, May or Miller said be felt there should be some under- standing as to the length of time persons had to pay the accounts when they signed up for the sewerage services.. Rands suggested the PUC should add interest on the ac- counts in an effort to get resi- dents to pay them. "It helps", he noted, "or at least it does around here be- cause we certainly don't like paying interest on any of our accounts". However, Miller said he didn't think this was the way to go after it because most people felt they may as well pay int- erest on their accounts as pay interest on money they have to borrow to pay the accounts. Chairman William E. Perdue suggested that one percent Per month should be added, to the accounts as this was recognized as legal interest. However, they decided to make f u r t her enquiries of neighboring commissions to see how they dealt with overdue accounts. Can't Switch Money The PUC was advised by A. M. Harper, auditor, Goderich, that it was not permissable for them to loan money from one department to the other, The question arose at the last meeting when Commissioner A. Garon suggested some of the surplus in the waterworks ac- count could be transferred to the sewerage account, even if only on a temporary basis. However, Harper advised the PUC that this was not legal. But, they did receive some consolation into the problem when it was noted there was $3,129.86 in the sewerage ac- count and they voted to turn over $3,000 of this to town council. On the • average, Canadians spend $235 a year on imported manufactured goads, compared to $75 in the U.K., $60 in West Germany land $35 in the U.S. Clinton News-Record-r-Thurs., ./con, 3, 1963..
