Maybe More Authority
Available to Counties
GODERICH (Special)—There
is a feeling that countries
should be given more authority
in certain lines, Clerk-treasurer
John. G. Berry reported in
bringing before Huron county
council the general question of
the value of county government,
Mr. Berry attended the Ont-
ario Municipal Association con-
vention at Niagara Falls, where
it !appeared from the debates',
heosaid, that certain changes
might be necessary, "partiCul-
arty stressing the poblems of
urban centres."
"However," Mr. Berry said,
"it was the general opinion that
local government on 'the county
level would still operate wheth-
er called county, , regional or
area."
"You now have authority to
carry out county welfare, coun-
ty elsses.sment, county counts of
revision, county- libraries, coun-
ty planning, and safety cons-
tructiom You can see that the
provincial authorities are wil-
ling 'to give the counties more
authority, and if the counties
are going to survive they. roust
be prepared to consider these
additional roles."
As treasurer, Mr, Berry re-
ported a surplus' of $2,920 on
general account, and deficit of
$31,230 on highways account,
"e situation which corrects it-
self as the road program is
completed and work begins to
slow doiwn."
The treasurer reported loss' of
revenue by reason of a change
in the provincial grant for in-
digent patients, 'He said the
indigent hospitalgrant would
require revision, end that this
was being investigated by him-
self ,and Hon Charles Mac-
Naughton.
The report was adopted, and
also that of the Huronview com-
mittee; of which Reeve Ralph
Jewell of (Colborne is chairmen,
"The number of residents haS
been on' :the increase," the re-
pert stated, "and if this trend
continues we are going to have
to adopt a policy of screening
every application to determine
whether or not we can adobm-
modate them at present or
whether their names will have
be placed on 'la waiting list."
Superintendent Harley John-
ston, speaker 'to the report, said,
"We have 179 residents and ek.
