Tight
Money ? ?
Canada's Credit Unions are under Provincial
Jurisdiction, Federal money policy doesn't work .
directly upon them. Yet, they are very important as
deposit-takers and lenders. Their saving deposits
now total around $1,400 million, far more than the
trust companies and. about one-fifth of those in
the banks.
The National Association of Canadian Credit
Unions said it feels ,that monetary policy is now
reflected generally in operations of its members,
although indirectly.
But it also said that Credit Unions shouldn't
be squeezed too hard by tight money. In other
words there should be an exception made.
The exception presumably would be made•
because a Credit Union is a kind of working-man's
"bank" and encourages thrift.

Council accepted a tender
from Wise Plumbing, Heating
and Electrical, for re-wiring of
the balance of the town hall, for
$768. This will bring the .wiring
in the building up to -standard
according to the hydro inspect-
or, and will 'provide for service
to the auditorium floor if ever
this is needed. Only one tender
had been received. „-
There was 'some discussion
over the problems faced ,b3r
council when only one tender,
or price, was submitted: Though
cannon was artanimous in, their
approval of the local firms who
have bid on this job, and on the
paving jell), • they neverthelesa
found it difficult to make de-
citionS, when there was no com-
parison on cost.
Deputy Reeve 'John Sutter
head of the general government,
committee advised that work on
the wiring would go forward
very soon. Also planned is bet-
ter lighting under the canopy at
the front entrance of the town
hall.
After lengthy cliactission coun-
eil apprOved A motion by Coun-
George Womb:, that the per-
formance bond of L. G. Winter
to cover construction of Toads,
sanitary sewers and house ••sani;'.
(Lary sewer connections, water-
mains and house water service
connections and storm • sewers
and -catch basins, in the. Pine-
crest Subdivision be set ,at
$4,000 cash. •
Originally the performance
bond was to have. been $5,000.
However, the sub-.divider had
found fit impossible to get this
bond, and had requested per-
mission to submit- a certified
cheque fon $4,000.
Both Reeve Agnew andiCoun-
cillor Alan Elliott expressed,
their disapproval of accepting
this "performance bond". The
reeve said, "When Lloyd's of
London wouldn't touch it, I
can't see why the town of .Clin-
ton should." This referred to
the fact that :the bond was not
available from ,a bonding corn-
pany.
Couneiller Elliott expressed
concern for the • sub-division,
since there had been some
"bad marks" 'against it in the
past, and he wondered if this
sort of thing would be intermin-
able. •
• Mayor William Miller pointed
out that it was the opinion of
ibme that council was trying to
hold up progress, hilt the On-
tario detiartment of highways
engineer had pointed out that
it. was conncil's. duty to make
mire things were right fon future
property owners.
A letter from the clerk will
be 'sent to Mr. Winter, pointing
oat that work on the Sub-
division must be completed
properly before building permits
will be issued.
Councillors Donald Syrnons
and G. Rtianball requested the
executive committee to bring in
a report with regard to planting
of trees and prices and kinds of
hits in the nine-imung game.
Listowel's three runs in the
seventh were the result of two
