I am quite sure if a Gayway "(barker" had tried to rent him an aluminum pressurized space suit with a promise that hp could (swing on a star while . I rambled around the Fine Ants building, he would have taken it quite casually. Ricky will never be a patron of the .arts. The only object in this startling and highly imag- inative collection of modern oils and statuary - at the Seattle World's Fair that rang a bell with him, was the Rube Gold- berg contraption. "Metamatic" created of welded trash that went off like a bomb at inter- vals jangling its old saws, tri- cycles, . headlight rims and heaven - knows - what, like a Hoochie4Coochie dancer. I found today's eleven-year- old boy .is much more mature than any of us give him credit for being... He has been raised on "Orbits" 'breakfast 'food, watched Glenn and Carpenter blast Off into outer space on his school TV. SpUtnicks, .Ech- oes, Thor missiles "and 'space travel are not scientific marvels- to him, or even exciting. His world of tomorrow has already arrived. Ricky's maturity was most apparent when he entered Canada House. This exhibit was something b:e could '.get, his intellectual molars into. I was interested in his first remark, "Canada is showing the world what we are doing in the 20th century to prepare for Century 21. Not a lot of fancy plastic models like most exhibits. This is: REAL!" The map of Canada, that dominates our country's parti- cipation in this World's Fair, is so beautiful it has had wide publicity. Well-deserved praise from the stream of humanity that trudges from one building to the ,other along the Inter, PatiOnal Boulevard's has been audible. Created of copper and brass, its acquamarine water areas. and colored lights, that point up the industrial development of Canada, make an effective mural so large I could only rocas, lest than half in the lens of my camera standing .at a distance of some thirty feet. What is planned of the eventu- al resting place of this master- piece was:. not revealed in any of the articles which Appeared in newspapers during our stay in Seattle, but I would hope that it will have a prominent place in Canada where- Cana- dians and visitors alike can ad- mire it for some time 'to come. Besides the map, there. were actual working models of a newly - developed perforated breakwater, the cobalt bomb for the Itreatm, ent of cancer, re- actors, and Top Side Sounder satellite. Realistically, the high arctic community of the future was modelled so convincingly it hardly seemed improbable 'that 'in less time than the life span , of a human being this wasteland may be dotted with high-rise apartment buildings built on stilts 'above the perma- frost to accommodate future population of this area. This imaginary project I could en- vision for I saw some small measure of what is being re.: searched and planned for the Arctic on my trip to Churchill two years ago.
