The minister of Transport,
Hon. • Mr. Rowntree has stated
that it is not the prupose of the
regulations to Carry out whole-
sale withdrawal of driving pri-
vilages, but rather to make all
motorists better drivers.
Wheat Exports Hit Bottleneck
Export demand for Canadian
grains has apparently dropped
in recent weeks and some con-
cern is being 'expressed at the
rate of movement of grain out
of the Lakehead.
As at June 6, stocks of wheat
were '55.6 million bushels com-
pared to 43 million a year ago,
bUt lake shipments for..theoyeek
were down to 2.9 million for the
same week last year, Lake
shipments of all grains from
Lakehead for the week were 5
million bushels, and 12.4 mil-
lion a year ago.

SAVE A LIFE BY
USING AMBER LIGHTS
Every year a...number of farm
people are killed or injured
while driving a tractor on Ont-
ario highways and rural roads.
Surely this slaughter can be
reduced. A flashing amber
light will give warning day or
night, to approaching or over-
taking traffic. Why not in-
stall-such a light on your tractor
when travelling the highway
or township roads, say safety
specialists with the Ontario De-
partment of Agriculture.

Amendment to Workman's
Compensation Act "
Farmers wino employ hired
help either full-time or season-
ally, should pay particular att-
ention to recent amendments to
the regulations under the Wor-
kmen's Compensation Act of
Ontario.
Sections 11-a to 20 of regul-
atidn 571 of the Act have been
altered in such a way as to
make it necessary fdr an em-
ployer of five or less workers
to provide a First Aid Box
containing certain, specific ite-
ms, and to maintain it' in a rea-
dily accessible place. ,
He ,is also obliged to see to
it that this First • Aid Box. is
in the care of one of his em-
ployees who is conversant with
first 'aid, and works in-the vic-
inity of the box. The First Aid
Kit shall contain a First Aid
Manual, scissors, safety pins,
antiseptic, and a number of
stated types of bandages and
dressings, including a triang-
ular bandage.
Persons employing more than
five persons are required to
provide a much larger first
aid kit, the contents of which
are also spelled out in the re-
gulation.
As more and more farmers
turn to hired help on either a
seasonal basis, or a fall-time
basis, it is imperative that they
recognize 'these requirements
that are spelled out under the
Workmen's Compensatibn Act.
However, over and above the
fact that such is required, it
would seem good common sen-
se that farmers have such
First Aid Kits available for the
benefit of ,their hired help, their
families, and themselves,
First Aid is no substitute for
Farm Safety, but we must be
realistic and recognize that ac-
cidents do happen. Proper
emergency care may save a
limb, and even a life.

TORONTO—"This is a Pain,
/*let that every farmer in On,
tarip should secure and read
plosely in his own interest,"
said. William Tilden, president
of ithe Ontario Federation of
Agriculture in referring to the
booklet "Farm Implements on
Ontario's .Highways". just re,
leased by the Ontario. Depart-
ment of Transport.
"There has been a' great
need for such a publication,"
said Mr. Tilden,' "particularly
in veiw of the degree to which
farm' people are, -required to
'use Ontario's roads and high-
ways in the ordinary course of
movement from farm to farm.
It was about a year ago that
the Ontario Federation of Ag-
riculture requested the Depart-
ment of Transport to compile
this informition into one do,
cument, and we are extremely
happy that Mr. Rowntree's De-
partment has seen fit to aek-
nowledge this request."
"Farm Implements on Ont-
ario's Highways", is a podket-
aized pamphlet packed with in-
formation that will be of great
assistance to farm people, It
spells out the requirements of
the Highway Traffic Act of
Ontario as it has to do with
movement of farm machinery
and tractors on highways. It
defines various kinds and types ,
of farm machines for legal pur-
poses, and the many illustrat-
ions graphically demonstrate
proper lighting and towing tech-
niques in laymen's terms. It
also lists a number of ways in
which farmers can , save both
lives 'and money.
"The Ontario Federation of
Agriculture is prepared to as-
sist in every way possible in
the distribution of "Farm Imp-
lements on Ontario's Highways."
Our Fend Service Staff will be
carrying a supply with them
at' all times, and our County
Federation of Agriculture Sec-
retaries will be supplied with
stocks ' for local people. We
urge. every farmer to acquire
this booklet, read it, and keep
it in a place where it may be
referred to from time to time.
Copies of "'Farm Implements
on Ontario's Highways" are av-
ailable free from the Depart-
ment of Transport, Parliament
