Rambling With Lucy
(Lucy R. Wood)
Now tthait the election is over—for a time at Ieast—Lucy
plans; to relax.
Yes, she exercised her franchise with considerable effort
net only on her pant but that of her hitsband and the three
"sbout. hearted men and true" who carried her aloft to the:
precinits at the secret balloting (booth. •
.And afterwardtsv as alio lay on her cat in the sun room, the
sound of a train whistle 'caught her ears. "Must be something
peculiar in the atmosphere," said she to herself when that
sounds to distin fly. Iit's peat train time in Clinton, but per -
harps it's a freight." •
Mit long afterwards a friend from Detroit dropped in.
"Where is thhe train?" the lady askeld, as once more the steam
whistle sounded on the air. "Co&dd) it be Goderich? Is there
a north wind"?" Lucy asked her hnusbbantd.
"No,". nand he, "the wind is s x th:."
"It could' hardly sound up here from, Hensa:,lli" Lucy re-
marked. •
The friend left and once more that strain whistle interrupt-
ed Lucy's meditations And suddenly the answer came to heir
(or so she thought). It must be a boat on the lake.
And then, latter on in the evening, aho2ut 10.30, that train
whistle stbanted blowing almost continuously. And Lucy
learned that it wat Fred Mate's steam engine from his wood
yard,
Bisll. Talbot, Sr., had brought it down as far as the Old
Forge about five o'clock. And -When the Conservatives started
rejoicing, Bill Talbott tooted the machine down the road with,
a lanitern hung on her for a headlight. Fred Mote went along
for the ride. A car went ahead and another followed closely!,
and ;about 20 more joined the procession. Aird some of thhe
old-time (threshers 'renewed their ybutth by having a ride on
the old, engine. .
The procession came around the east 'side of Clan Gregor
Square, down Main Street, east on Catherine to Colina, east
tto Louisa Street, up orotund Clan Gregor Square to Keith
Crescent and stopped at Bill Talbot's house,
It was peculiar that 'extra loud blasts sounded es it
passed houtses whose occupants were molt Conervativesl
Reactions were many. It was repotted to Lucy that one

the police shop it?"
And one old' -time Conservative was so annoyed over the
noise that young fork thought him a, Liberal next day!
And gating up to the Post Office to post Lucy's news
budget to the Clinton News. -Record, her husband overheard
a farther say to hast children: "Wever in your life time will
you again Gee a thing like that passing your door;"
Mr. Mote keeps his political leavings 'to hinnself, but he
endoyed the little trip anyway„ for he likes steam engine
tractors, This one is a Robt, Belli' Machine, the iastt one via=
