The election split Tory To- rantto wide open, sending 14 big -name Tory MP's dawn; to - defeat (finance minister Flem- ing • survived with a splinter- thin majority) . Liberals added 11 'seats to their single Toronto seat, and the NDP tripleld its vote, electing three members. One NDP member of the last House, Walter Pittman of Petenboro, Ont., was defeated, losing to .a Conservative, All panties last capable men. One of Mr. Diefenbaker's first tasks will be to fill up his cabinet and his hardest jab will 'be to give Quebec its pro- m 'i s e d "full representation". Three of the six PC cabinet hiar!isiters were routed there. The. Tories who did survive - as was the pattern generally across the caunitry--+held on by the slimmest of margins. The big question now is that of ;how the Social Credit mem- bers will behave in parliament. As Blair Fraser commented .on OBC -TV election night, they comprise a "queer,'chaotic" group. With 26 of the 30 Soared members hailing Broin Quebec, leader Robert Thompson will have difficulty in restraining the group from degenerating into e fanatic French Canadian minority (bloc. He doesn't speak Flrenc'h, and many of his new Quebec MP's don't speak Eng- lish. There may be a power 'struggle between. Thompson and Caouette. But what disturbs many ob- servers -including this one -is that Social Credit federally seems to have no coherent natioaai policy: Quebec Socred won much support on a ,promise of $100 a month dividends, which they won't be able to pry out of the Diefenbaker trea- sury. Sacred candidates - in- cluding Thompson - 'attacked "de!bt and taxes" but gave no of how a government can operate without these evils. In 'so doing, the ,Socreds re- pudiated the policies of neces- sary taxation which S.C. goy- ernane, ntts in B.C. and Alberta have !followed, and in so 'doing have given generally good gov- ernment. Perhaps the Socred strength in Quebec is only a flash in the pan, or !perhaps Canada N iati for a difficult period of unstable government t until the changing political patterns of the. nation reshape a new parity alignment in the year's ahead. istrict Wi liC'urrd n Knox Pres!hyter, lan Church, Co; eric i, was the scene of a pretty wedding en Saturday afternoon, June 16, when Dor- :c' by May Curran became the bride of Robert Wayne 'Willis, Co !cr'icil, The Rey, G.
