Eggene "Butch" McLaren, a
Mechanic at Wells Auto Elec-
tric, Clinton, entered his first
registered pistol and revolver
shooting match at Walkerton
last Sunday and made better
scores than many more exper-
ienced shooters. He is a mem-
ber a the-Clinton Revolver

Competing in the tyro class,
which is open to anyone who
has not shot in a registered
slhoot, Butch took the rapid-
fire part of the class.
The earnpettion consisted of
two Slow-fire 'targets at 50
yeardls, 20 shots per target; twe
timed-fire targets at '45 yards,
20 shots per target; two rapid-
fire targets at 25 yards, 20

al match courte at 4 yards.

from 'Clinton, placed third in,

• "We hear of how much
money came into Huron county
from government, Why, because
private investors were afraid
of farm mortgages. Private in-
dividuala lend to the govern-
ment. They think it's, safe.
Then the government takes the
very some money and loans it
back to the farmers because it
is dangerous. And it is dan-
gerous.
"I was out to a young farm-
er's near here: He bouglht
new tractor in 1951 and paid
cash for it. Last winter it blew
up on 'him. Told he should buy
a new one, he had to borrow
$2,300 'from the bank.
"It the first tractor could not
replace his savings, how' can
the 'second one repay his debit?
When the third tractor is need-
ed, the man's savings will be
gone, his credit gone, and what
is he to do?
"This is the condition' that
we have to face in 'agriculture.
True the government loans
money. It loans to farmers at
5 percent. Yet the Department
of Agrictilture statistics in the
United States' gays that a farm-
er can make only three per-
cent on,capital investment. So
when the farmer borrows
money at five percent; he IS
automatically lasing two per-
cent. The situation in, Canada
is not much different.
If we're going to give assist-
ance to farmers, let's give it.
If we're going to loan him
money, at must be loaned to
him at a place where he can,
break even, if were going to
help him.
"All through the years, the
government has said, 'Too bad
boyts, you' produce too much.'
Last year the weather produced
a drought Western Canada,
and in August, before harvest
Was begun, they . ran to the
United States, issued' !import
quotas and brought in all kinds
of ,grain. The price for oats
had gone up `almost to $60 'a
ton. Now, I doubt if the farm-
ers can get. $45.
Is this the kind of assistance
that farmers are supposed to
be getting?
"Consider corn. Recently the
government issued price assist-
ance on Ontario corn into East-
ern Canada. But they pay it to
the feed mills and it doesn't
matter where the corn comes
front, in the Maritimes they
get the subsidy. 'And they are
buying American corn and our
government is paying subsidy
on it and our Ontario corn
growers are in exactly the
'same position as they were be-
fore.
"Our 'answer to a lot of this
is co - operatives, marketing
bo'ard's and in produtts that are
produced across Canada, we
will provide legislation making
marketing boards possible on a
national basis. Both the old
parties voted against this in
the laSt session of parliament,
Yet I know 'now that they are
tellinglls 'that they Will provide
Marketing of our prodtict."

ed at a price that will use up
the surplus. We want to en-
courage the sale of all dairy
products.
"As to agriculture products
as a whole , the farmer can-
not know how much of what
he produces will be sold in one
season, or when. The govern-
ment can and should come to
his aid in this instance. A new
liberal government will get
research service on market and
price conditions. Experts, will
inform producers of the result
of their analysis which will
make it much easier for them
to see what 'the requirements
will do.
"The New Liberal govern-
ment will give a square deal to
the Western Ontario farmer
and you and I are interested
in Huron, I believe policies are
important, but -it is more Im-
portant to keep the problems
of the farmer and everyone in
Huron right in front of the
eyes of those who know.
"The only way to get things
and I do find ,this out in Goder-
ich, is to keep pressing your
problems in front of the right
people. That's aggressiveness.
"And I suggest to you, lad-
ies and gentlemen, that the new
liberal government will pro-
duce the leadership, the pro-
gress, the productivity and the
prosperity to Huron."

Quebec to make clothing there,
In the long form we will boner
fit by devaluation, he said.
Mr. Hemingway, New Demo-
elide Party, noted that the fuss
over money is, simply a red,
herring, The value Of our
money is dependent on pro-
duct, What we have to think
about is -to produce more, not
less. Ancl the producers Should
clo the selling, not' the govern-
ment,
He noted that Mr, Fisher
was' pretty young. He would not
recall that when cheese pro,
ducers found an export mar-,
ket, then the Liberal govern-
ment had allowed cheese into
Canada, it had depressed the
price, and the problem still re-
mained. As far as Polish egg
imports go, they are separated
in Canada, and the whites stay
here. Only the yolks are sent
back into the European market.
And if Canadian farmers have
a market for deep yellow yolk-
ed eggs, they can produce them
quickly by feeding ,hens to get
them.
Mr. Fither made no rebuttal,
claiming he was "too young".
There was a lengthy question
and answer period in which
both urban and farm people
posed questions. The session
w,ag kept well in hand by chair-
man Mr. Hanna, and one who
was not a farmer expressed his
a'pprecia'tion of the evening, at
its close.
