These columns the past

Fans in the Flesh
I opened the front door the
other day answering the jingle
of sleigh bells that serves to
announce a visitor at our house
and looked into the bluest eyes
I have ever seen outside the
head of a china doll..
These were anything but
glassy. They. twinkled and
seemed to dance behind rimmed
glasses, When I learned their
owner was seeking "the Vaga-
bond" I invited the small mid-
dle-aged woman and her hus-
band to "bide a wee". This is
country balk for I instinctively
knew they were closely akin to
the land.
They had travelled, they said,
more than two hundred miles
to meet the author of this.
colutnn. I must say I was a
little overcome by this informa-
tion and tried to contain my,
curiosity until tea was brewed
and we were all comfortably
settled before a snapping grate
fire. -The wind was still nippy
and even though the sun was
already baking the earth by
its direct rays, it was too soon
to forget that a fire like a
good wine, at this time of year
stimulates the warmth of wel-
come,
My visitors informed me, as
they buttered hot tea biscuits
and dipped thein in new Maple
Syrup, that they have been un-
identified readers of the column
since its inception in their
hometoWn paper.
"When our anniversary call-
ed for a special celebration

gentleman interjected), I told

I "told hint" My guest chuckled,
blowing little crumbs of bis-
cuits onto her gray silk blouse
and flicking them off with a
parer serviette decorated with
the Shrine of Evangeline, souv-
enir of my last trip east.

Worth Repeating Returns
Canadian poet and novelist Ronald Hambleton
has delved into the CBC 'program archives to find
material for his Thursday evening show, Worth
Repeating. Heard on the Trans-Canada radio net-
work, the program brings recorded material from
outstanding and memorable programs broadcast in
past years on CBC radio. Hambleton is editor and
host of this series. (CBC Photo)

have always traveled by car
to and from the bigger cities
"but Fred's hot crazy about
these new super highways ,any-
more," I learned.
"It must have been a couple
of years ago. that you wrote
about your eldest son taking
his family by train to visit an
aunt. I remembered they hired
a car when they arrived and
I said to Fred, that's for us.
So we boarded a CN coach,
found 'the car waiting for us
at the station on arrival, and
here we are," Fred smiled at
his effervescent spouse while,
at her request, he ticked off on
his fingers the names and ages
of their offspring. and then the
names of my four grandchil-
dren.
The latter recital was a bit
of a surprise for I found it
hard to realize a reader, no
matter how loyal, would re-
member such details. "Oh, we
don't miss a tick in that
column," the little lady said
when I remarked on their
memory.
Journalistic Idol
This is understandable to me
because for years 'I felt I was
a perSonal friend of Gladys
Taber, who wrote "The Diary
of Domesticity" in the Woman's
Home Companion. I knew the
