rather Strange to me that
whilst the Union jack and 'the
R,ed :Ensign do not fulfill the
requirements of many Cana,
diens (not necessarily Clinton-

no compunction at having the
Stars and Stripes: flutter proud-

I would be most interested
in readers views on this sub-,

of ,is that in A .prolcgnioantly

.default,-because those who

tion; . ,status may not care
enough .to go out and vote, It
was Edmund Burke Who said
that "Ail that is necessary for
evil to win, is that good people
shall do notiting,:".
We may not feel that legal
constraint very ,goi3d bul-
wark of abstinence or temper-
erice, .but our laws decree that
this particular issue must be
decided at the polls. And it is
by our ballots that we have to
make our Christian witness.
Only last week I attendeld
at Westminster College an
portant conference of our
church on the work of the.
laity; and the central emphasis
of the conference was' this —
that as never before Christian
laymen must stand up for their
coritivictions in the everyday
world of business and of pol-
itics and municipal life. May
23 will afford our laymen a
unique opportunity to assert
their Christian convictions at
the polls.
Nor is it the -much to: 'hope
that many voters who them-
selves drink with untroubled
conscience will be sufficiently
aware of the havoc of alcohol
in the lives of others that'they
will vote "No" when they mark
their ballots. Listen to what
one man .has written — "You
will never stop me drinking,
but if you can preVent some
young person from going
through the hell that I've been
through, all power to you, En-
eldsed find $25."
Let no one be fooled by -the
suggestion that revenue from
liquor sales wilt diminish taxes,
The town of Clinton 'received a,
tax rebate of $550 from Its bev-
erage room sales in 1961, Gode-
ridh Township would certainly
receive much less. At best the
tax receipts would not be over
$1 per tax payer! Judas sold
Jesus for 20 pieces of Silver.
It there a Single voter in Code-
rich Township so obsessed with
gain that he will his, cons.-
cience on May 23 for a single
dollar?
But, I say, I am afraid lest
the people who know the perils.
of alcohol and! who disapprove
of its licensed sale will not
trouble to go to the polls and
witness with their ballots!
Citizens of, G-oderich Town-
ship, I. challenge you to get out
and vote on . May 23! And I
hope you will vote "No" on all
four ballots.
Clifford G. Park,
Minister of Wesley-Willis
United' Church, Clinton.

"For a young' country like
