Begin As Yarn
The stodkings _begin at the
Clinton hosiery firm as yarn
end' leave the factory wrapped,
stamped,. sized and ready for
wear.
The stocking firm knitS the
hosiery from silk, nylon and
other synthetic yarns and the
stockings come in any size from
knee-length on. Both seamed
and unseamed 'stockings are
made here in the hub of Huron.
The stockings begin when
white colored yarn is inserted
into either a bank type knit-
ting machine for seamed hose
or separate knitting machines
for the unseat/red variety.
The size and shape of the
newly made stocking are de-
termined by a code chain which
runs through 'the machine mak-
ing it "knit one, pearl two" at
the appropriate moment.

When theise operations are
completed you have what ap,

These stockings are • then

shaped metal. "board's" are
automatically moved into the-
machine. The door slides shut
-and the hosiery is pressure
cooked under 28 pounds of
steam at 260 degrees, foe one
and a half minutes.
This is done, Wilfred Park-
er says, to shrink the hose to
their proper size. "There is a
certain amount of Shrinkage
in nylon and 'the machine 'takes
it out," he said.
At every step in production
the hosiery is carefully inspect-
ed so no unfinished, stockings
leave the plant.
Dyed London
The completed hosiery is
then shipped to 'a dyeing.-firm
in London where they acquire
the many shades ladies desire.
Dyed stockings return to the
factory where they are again
sorted to size, color and again
"boarded" to give them their
shape once more. -
The stockings 'are then care-
fully matched into pairs of the
same uniform length and, color,
and stamped with their trade
name.
They are taken, to packaging
tables where they are carefully
packed into boxes or cellophane
sleeveS.
