• Rambling With Lucy
. . (Lacy R. Woods)
To Let: Two bluebird houses, unfurnished, suitable for
occupancy immediately. One designed from a hollow post—
good view' at nine feet; second, rectangular 5" x 6" by 8"
higih, slanting exof, erected! ,a:t five feet. Tenants mast do
awn' decorating. Entrance Ile", 6" from floor, guaranteed
too small for %tailingsi. Good feeding grounds, ants, mos-
quitoee and other smaill ineects: plentiful (aceording to law
no tents allowed—for caterprillarsi). Area: "The Hut", Bay-
field' Terrace, Bay:Relict
Built in response to, and advertieed: on :behalf of the
"Save the Bluebird Campaign".
Actressthe road is a fine new colony house for martins,
and a box' for the House Wren swings from a maple bough.
There is a home for chickaderee in the hedge, at "The
Hut" +and also a hoarse for Jenny Wren or some of her
progeny. It remains to be seen whether or not the latter
preterthe old nesting site. - -
Lucy and her husband have been interested in the
number of d antbirdwhkh have come to the feeding
s,tions
Mas. Cardinae is bundling a nest somewhere elope by.
She's been deserved making -trips up from the river with
materials in her bill, but where she kettles is still a deep,
dark secret.
One morning 'after the rain, she was seen perched on,
a maple limb in the garden ab "The Hut" booking dumpy
and discouraged, her wet feathers atl ruffled. Then Mr.
Cardinal Row from the station end very gently put a shelled
sunflower geed into her hill, like the gaillasnt gentiernsan he
becomes 'at this season.
Last year we could only boast two pair of robins at
"The Hut". They nested on the rain gutter of the south
west corner and in the Persian lilacs at the front gate, the
latter quite cenvenient to a cherry tree. They brought their'
kith and kin with them thisyear, 'amid they've all been sing -
big cheerily. But on the day after arrival:, old Mrie. Robin
sat undler the cherry tree all clay chirping—she must have
been recalling am the cherries upon which she feasted last
summer!!
On SuricleY, • Lucy's. attention was called to a bird out
under the. station. Art first glance it looked like a robin.
But it turned nut to be a towhee—the first Lucy had eve,r
recognized es sub. And the bird scratched away like an
old ben for seeds dropped by other birds while feeding.
The action was SO different from the robin which cocks
its head expectantly, listens intently, and *en plunges his.
bill into the earth to bring out a fine, fat, wriggling worm:—
eometimee only after quite a struggle.
