SPCA Officer Gets
Precautionary
Anti-Rabies Shots
SPCA chief inspector, Arthur
Jennings, RR 3, Goderich,
started anti-rabies treatments
last Wednesday, 11 days after
he was in contact with a dog
that may have been rabid.
Mr. Jennings termed the anti-
rabies treatment a 'pre-
cautionary" measure. He said
he had been called to destroy
a dog that was known to have
been in contact with another
dog that died of rabies.
His doctor said Mr. Jennings
had wrestled a large ownerlesS
Alsation dog back to his car,
getting some blood on his
hands in the process, "He had
some small scratches on his
hand," the doctor said and it
was decided to administer the
Pasteur treatment — daily
shots for a 14-day period — to
be safe.
Dr. R. M. Aldis, Huron
County medical officer of
health, said rabies• had not;
reached the epidemic stage al-
though a sharp rise noted last:
May, continues unabated,
One county official said he,
felt the disease had reached
the epidemic level.
"There is no need to pante,"
Dr. Aldis said, "but people
should treat with respect stray
dogs, and animals that are ad'
lag strangely."
He said 27 persons—roughly
two thirds in the last half of
the year-- received anti-rabies
treatments in 1961 in Huron
County,
Drs Aldis pointed out that the
current strain of rabies has an
entirely diffetent effect on cats
than on dogs. He Said that cats
become furious, biting and
attacking everything in sight,.
Dogs however, are afflicted
with a paralysis of the IONver
jgaaWid, and "can't do much," he
