passed away in Stanley ToWn-
Ship on January 16. The Rev.
T. j, Pitt, Varna United Ch-
urch, conducted the service and
interment was in Bayfielci
Cemetery.
PaThbearers were Robert
Johnston, Jim Kart, Robert.
Webster, Earl Tipping,
Dawson and Donald Campbell.
Flower-bearers were Wilmer
Reid, Keith Keys, Lee McCon-
nell, Glen 'Masson, Ronald Tay
for and Ernie McClinchey.
Born on January 9, 1917, he
was the son of Mr. and Mrs. J.
Wellington Johnston, and farm-
ed 'all of his life in the Varna
community. He belonged to
Varna United Church and Var-
na LOL 1035. Death came
suddenly tram a heart attack.
Surviving is one brother, J.
Percy Johnston, Varna; four
sisters, Ma's. 14. J. (Rena) Lud-
dington, Port Credit; Mrs. Mel-
vin (Cassie) Webster, Varna;
Rachel Johnston, Varna and
Mrs. Harold (Margaret) DoW-
son, Varna.
Those attending the funeral
included Mrs. T. R. Dryden,
Mrs. Charles Adamson, Mrs.
Fred Flora, Toronto; Mr. and
Mrs. Harry Pierson, Wellington,
Ont.; Mr. and Mrs. Earl Tip-
ping, Sarnia.

Mrs. Norman Sly, 74, died
Wednesday, January 17 in Scott
Memorial Hospital, Seaforth,
Where she had been a patient
for two days after a lengthy
illness at home.
The former Nora Martin,
Mrs.' STY was born in England
and came to Canada as a young
child. She was at first married
to Millar Lawrason of Cath-
cart who died in 1926. She
later married Norman Sly and
has since lived in Clinton or
vicinity.
She was an active member
of Ontario Street United Chur-
ch where she taught Sunday
School for many years.
, Surviving • besides her hus-
band are two daughters, Mrs.
Nellie Nurse at home and Jo-
yce, Mrs. Alex Powell, Bramp-
ton and eight grandchildren.
She was predeceased last Au-
gust by a son, George Lawra-
son, British Columbia.
The funeral was held on
Saturday, January 20 from the
Ball and Mutch funeral home
to the Clinton Cemetery with
Rev. Grant Mills conducting the
service. The pall-bearers, were
Arthur. Aiken, Murray •Crich,
George Lavis, John Lavis, Ross
Merrill and Bob Elliott. Flower
bearers.' were Gerald'. and Craig
Cox.

lard; two sons, William. Jr. at
home; John,Orillia; three dau-
ghters, Mrs. Albrt (Helen)
Hayward, Clinton; Mrs. Samuel
(Donna) Shearing and Mrs.
John (Marjorie) Smith, both of
St, Thomas; one sister, Miss
Margaret 'Walker, Aylmer.

He held pastorates in Lon-

Niagara Fails, N.Y. Upon mov-
ing back to Canada he held
pastorates in Arthur, St. Marys,
Stratford and Shakespeare be-
fore retiring in 1955.
They lived in their own home
in London before moving to the
Dearness Home. Surviving are
his wife the former Margaret
Rags at •the Dearness Home;
one daughter, Mrs. Ross (Mild-
red) Orr, St. Catherines; two
sisters, Mrs. John IVICAsh, Var-
na and Mrs. Annie Reid, Lon-
don

Church addressed the inaugur-
al session of the board. He st-
ated that 'in addition to their
course of study, children should
be taught how to live -and be-
come citizens of the community.
"I -recall teachers I had when
.young; and they had just as
-much impact upon me, as min-
isters had." •
"Selection of teachers is im-
portant," said Dr. Lane. "And
I wonder if religious education
,shearld. be . left ..to the .teachers.
.4 wonder how they - can teach
religion without being connect-
ed with some branch of the
church," - -
"Your, private life in the
community will go far toward
insuring your continued. mem-
bership ori the board," said Dr.
Lane. "The individual: able to
conduct his own affairs well
and wisely is' the type of Indiv-
idual which' people of the corn-.
munitar want to care for their
own children's need's in educa-
tion. Personal faith in -a good
and, righteous God is required."
' Chairman Lavis commented
that he had begun attending
-public school just about the
time that -Mr. Cudmore began,
his service on the board. "We
realize too late sometimes, the
inflUence of our example upon
the young people," said Mr.
Lavis.
Dr. Lane conducted a short
prayer, and a minute's silence
in memory of the late George
H. Jefferson, former - principal
of the school.-
Harold C. Lawson was re-
hired. as secretary - treasurer
with a raise of $50. The board
authorized the Home and Sch-
ool Association to proceed with
a project to 'have pictures tak-
en of each student.
The striking committee com-
posed of C. Dixon, K. Colquh-
skin and G. Lavis brought in
the following committees which
were approved: study and wel-
f are, Colquhourt, Woods, Ir-
win; property, purchases and
finance, Woods, Switzer, Dixon;
sports, Irwin, Switzer, Dixon.
Meetings will be held the sec-
ond Thursday of each month.
Caretakers P. Livermore and
T. Zablothi were re-engaged,
with. salaries' to be reviewed,
and repOrted on at the next
Meeting.
Principal J. A. "Bert," Gray
reported average attendance of
94.8 percent: There Were eight
stadent teachers from Strat-
ford Teachers College -at the
school last Week.

The Catholic Women's Lea-
gue of RCAF Station Clinton
met Monday, JanuarY 22, This
is the first meeting to be held
in the new church of St, Paul's
and was proceeded by the ros-
ary and benediction. The busin-
ess meeting was opened by the
president, Mrs. E, J. Lesnick
Minutes of the preceding meet-
lag were read by the secretary
MTS. W. A. Wickware, and the
treasurer's report was present-
ed by Mrs, J .R. Huard.
Since January is especially
dedicated to -the Holy family
of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, an
excellent reading on -this sub-
ject was given by Mrs. W. W.
Hacking, the spiritual conven-
er.
The OWL is sponsoring an
essay contest for February wh-
ich is Catholic press month.
Children in the Grades 6, 7, 8
religious classes will compete.
A group discussion on fam-
ily life followed the close of the
business meeting and •the ev-
ening ended with a social hour
and -lunch.

ambulance on Wednesday,
January 17 to Scott Memorial
Hospital, Seaforth.
Little Johnnie Hauwert, five
year old son of Mr. and Mrs.
Theo Hauwert, Concession 8,
Tuckersmith Township, is a
patient in St. Joseph's Hospi-
tal, London, where he under-
went surgery.
Baby Cooper, infant daugh-
ter of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd
Cooper, Concession 8, Tucker-
smith; is in Scott Memorial
Hospital, Seaforth, recovering
from an attack of pneumonia.
The MacKay family received
word of the sudden passing of
Percy Holmes, Toronto, who
died of a heart attack. Mr.
Holmes is a brother of Mrs.
Ross MacKay, Hillsburgh.
