Geo McCutcheon Elected
Thirty-nine year old George
McCutcheon, .Brussels, was el-
ected warden of Huron County
on Tuesday afternoon, during
the inaugural session of the
36 reeves who make up the
County Council.
Reeve McCutcheon is the first
warden from Brussels in 26
years. The ,bast time Brussels
village had a warden, was in
1936, .the fate Bob Bowman.
Jahn Berry, clerk -treasurer
of the county of Huron, con-
ducted the election', calling up-
on; each candidate first to give
his campaign speech.
Roy Adair, Wingham, told of
his. 25 yews in business in
Wingharn; tern years on county
coun'c'il, and' his desire to get
more autonomy for the af-
fairs of county council so that
the body could give m6re sup -
pori to agriculture and to pro-
motion of industrial develop-
ment within the county. He
urged more 'opportunities for
the young people, and greattest
value -possible from the tax
dollar. He named John; Fisher
as his scrutineer.
Valentine Becker, Dashwood,
reeve of Hay Township, spoke

cil, 'six years on the council of
the township, and 30 years in
the farm machinery business..

Harvey Coleman, RR 1, Var-
na, reeve -of Stanley Township,
told of seven years in county
council ,and 14 years on the
township council. He noted
that the campaign for warden
had been fairly rugged. He
had enjoyed meeting all of the

Clarence Hanna, East Wa-
wanosh reeve, told of his hope
to make county council strong-
er, despite ,the talk in some
quarters of getting rid' of coun-
ty council's. He said he would
like to ,be warden, especially
so since he bad once been a
ward of the Chi.Idren's Aid' So-
ciety of :the county, and he
desired the satisfaction of be-
ing warden, .hawing risen from
that status. He named Bert
Thompson as his scrutineer.
Mr. McCutcheon spoke brief-
ly and named Bill King, clerk
of Brussels +as: his scrutineer,
It required four ballots to
gest a decision on the warden's
job. Each time the low man
dropped off, and balloting con-
tinued on the remaining candi-
dates. On the final ballot Reeve
McCutcheon polled 25 votes;
compared -to Valentine Becker's
7.4.
Clinton's reeves showed a st-
aunch ,support of Reeve Mc-
Cutcheon throughout the bal-
loting. Both Reeve M. Crich
and Deputy Reeve M. J, Agnew
voted solidly during the four
ballot's.
At the end of the first bal-
lot Becker and McCutcheon
were 'tied with eight 'votes; Ad-
air and Coleman each had 7.
Hanna dropped out with six:
On the second 'ballot >Cole-
man +and McCutcheoh were tied.
with 11 each and Becker had 9.
Low man was Mr. Adair with
five votes
