Crawford smiled and chuckled as
she made her way up and off the
platform. She was too shy to be part
of the group photo but I did manage
to catch up with her after the recital
to tell her how wonderful it was to
have her as part of this night. I had to
ask her why she decided to take
lessons at this later stage of life? She
smiled and told me how learning to
play the piano was something on her
bucket list. She said as a young girl
she began to take lessons but had
given up shortly after which had
disappointed her Mother. So here
she was, encouraging us all that it is
never too late to learn, to try and
accomplish new things in life. I
asked her how old she was and she
chuckled again responding, “39”. So
I will print that as being her
age because I know at one
time in her life she would have been
39.
After the recital, all were all
invited downstairs of the church for
a reception with refreshments and a
time of visiting. A real nice twist on
MacVicar’s school is that throughout
the year students earned ‘Bach
Bucks’ for completing assignments
and practising. The students used
their Bach Bucks to buy items found
laid out on tables after the recital
with the purpose of using them as
Christmas gifts for others. Merry
Christmas everyone. See you next
year.

Group reviews trail
The Wingham Community Trail
Committee recapped their year
during North Huron Township
Council’s Dec. 15 meeting outlining
the committee’s successes and plans
for the future.
Phil Beard, a member of the
seven-member committee,
explained the trail committee started
in 1996 as a group of citizens trying
to save the old railway bridge and
expanded from there.
It currently works, through several
partnerships, with the community to
offer trails all through Wingham.
These partners include Wescast, F.E.
Madill Secondary School, the
Wingham Brownies and Guides,
Maitland River Community Church
and North Huron staff.
Beard explained the group had
recently published a book full of
positive stories about the trail that
was well received and said it was
one of the most recent steps in trying
to spread awareness of the trail. He
said that thanks to the Wingham
Homecoming and the Doors Open
Huron events, awareness had surged
in the previous year.
As for 2015, the organization
plans to continue with
improvements to the trail, including
safety fences, stone dust and
accessibility improvements as well
as planting cedar trees and
wildflowers along with the
assistance of property owners
adjacent to the trail.
To help the group function quicker
Beard requested that funds held by
North Huron for the group be
transferred to the organization.
“We’re not a committee of
council, so all the money we have is
from donations and plaques,” he
explained. “We respectfully request
to allow the committee to handle its
own funding by moving it to Libro
Credit Union.”
Beard explained Libro has
released a new line of accounts with
no charges for community groups
like the committee. The credit union
will also make a small donation to
the group.
“I think we’ve established a
reputation over the last 18 years of
being responsible and contributing,”
he said. “We will also be more than
willing to come and make reports to
council regarding the committee.”
A motion to transfer the funds and
responsibilities was approved by
council and will take effective
