Chelow, who has been spending the past week in Toronto returned home Saturday. Mr. Mervyn Brown left on Tues­ day, for Toronto, where he intends visiting for some time. Mr. Earl Kaiser, of Detroit, spent a few days last week with his par­ ents Mr. and Mrs. John Kaiser. Mr. Howard Hemphill, of London, spent the week-end with his parents Mr. and Mrs. A. W. E. Hemphill. Dr. and Mrs. I. G. Smillie were in Toronto over the week-end and cal­ led on relatives and friends there. Mr. and Mrs. Elgin 'Hayter, of London, visited on Sunday with the latter’s parents Mr. and Mrs. R. D. Bell. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Cook, of Tor­ onto, visited over the week-end with the former’s parents Mr. and Mrs. C. Cook. Mr. Norman Mair, of New Ham­ burg has been engaged on this sec­ tion of the C. N. R. tracks during the past week, Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Parkins and daughter Edith visited over the week-end with Mr. and Mrs. Cline Flynn in London. ' Mr. and Mrs. John Kaiser who have been visiting relatives in De­ troit for the past several weeks re­ turned home last week. Mr. Hugh Morenz, Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Adams and son Donnie, of Dashwood, were Sunday visitors with Mr. and Mrs. John Corbett. Miss Moha Glen who underwent an operation for removal of her ton­ sils at Dr. Steer’s office Tuesday morning is able to be out again. Miss Joyce Scruton, of Toronto, visited over the week-end with her mother Mrs. A. Scruton and sister Mrs. Peter McNaughton. Master Rossie Corbett who has been spending the past week with his grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Al­ bert Morenz, of Dashwood, returned home Sunday. Miss Emma Pfaff, who has been receiving treatment at a hospital in London was able to return to the home of her brother Mr. John Pfaff on Sunday. Mr. Roy Weber has moved into the store in the Petty block, recently vacated by Mr. T. D. Wren and has .opened up a very fine hardware store. The Canadian Legion are holding a Bingo- and Dance in the Town Hall on Wednesday evening. The music will be supplied by the Murdock orchestra. The officers and teachers of the Carmel Pr.esbyterian Sunday School met on Monday evening to make ar­ rangement^ for tlieir annual Christ­ mas concert. The many friends of Mies Irene Hoggarth will be pleased to see her, able to be out ag^in. after being con­ fined to her home during the past week suffering from poisoning from an ingrown toe-nail. The services in the United Church were conducted by the pastor Rev. R. A. Brook and were largely at­ tended. The choir rendered excel­ lent anthems “Praise and Adoration” and “Glad Thanksgiving,” Mr, Glen Bell had the misfortune to meet with a painful accident on Friday, while attending a shooting match at Mr, John Stewart’s on the Boundary, when he slipped and fell dislocating his shoulder. He was brought to the office of Dr. Steer where he was' attended. United Y. P. S. The regular, meeting of the Young people’s .Society of the United church Miss Gladys Passmore presided. Af­ ter singing a hymn Miss Elva Mc­ Queen led in prayer. The Scripture lesson John 10 was read by Miss R. Brook. The Devotional paper on “The Good Shepherd” by Miss G. Passmore, Instrumental by Miss Norma Cook was much enjoyed. Miss Kay Drysdale gave a reading “Send­ ing out the Seventy”; a piano solo “The Ninety and Nine” by Miss Gre­ ta Lammie; reading “The Good Shepherd” by Mrs. Lee Hedden. Af­ ter the singing of a hymn the meet­ ing closed with the benediction, Arnold Circle Hold Ookinole Party A very pleasant time was spent at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Bell last Wednesday evening when the Arnold Circle, of Carmel Presbyter­ ian Church held a crokinole party. The ladies’ first prize was won by Miss Helen Moir and ladies’ consol­ ation prize by Mrs. D. Workman, The gentleman’s first prize was won by Mr. John Love and the consolation prize by Mr. Archie McGregor. There were about fifty present and a boun­ tiful lunch served, A hearty vote of thanks was. extended to Mr. and Mrs, Bell for their hospitality by the president Miss- Isabel Workman and was seconded by Rev. W. A. Young. Nomination Meeting 4 The nomination meeting to select candidates for reeve, councillors, school trustees and public utilities for the coming year was held in the Town Hall, Friday evening. Welsh'. young People’s Services Well- Attended Very successful Young People’s Services were held in Carmel Pres­ byterian Church on Sunday, The president Mrs. A. W. Kerslake very ably conducted the services assisted by a young people’s choir and mem­ bers of the young people’s society. A-t the morning service the Scripture reading was taken by Gerald Camp­ bell and Mrs. R. McLaren and Miss Mabel Workman led in prayer. Rev. W. A. Young gave a very inspiring address taking for his subject “The Arrow of the Lord’s Del-iverance." The choir sang a- very beautiful an­ them “Praise My Soul” and -de­ lightful duet by Misses Margaret and Jean Love “Who is the .Shepherd so Kingly and Kind.” ■ At the evening service the Scripture was read by James Campbell and Misses Hannan Murray and Irene Hoggarth led in prayer. Rev. W. A. Young gave a very fine discourse taking as his subject “The Narrow Way”. A mix­ ed quartette “When Jesus is Near” by Misses Irehe HOggarth, Mabel Workman and Mrs. Jas, Bengough and Rev. W. A. Young was very beautifully sung also an anthem by the choir “Jesus Saves.” Young People Meet The regular meeting of the young people of Carmel Presbyterian church was held on Monday night with a good attendance. The president Mrs, A. W. Kerslake presided and open­ ed the meeting with singing hymn '.‘Unto the Hills Around Do I Lift up my Longing Eyes”, followed by pray­ er by Mrs. Kerslake, Bobbie Cameron then read the Scripture lesson and James -Mustard gave a very inter­ esting devotional talk on “the mis­ sion of the seventy’’. Mrs, W. A. Young then sang a beautiful solo “He lifted me” accompanied by Mies Irene Hoggarth. The minutes of the ' last meeting were redd and adopted. The roll was called and answered by a verso from the Bible. Miss Irene Hoggarth, worship convenor, then presided over the Bible Study from the life of David. Mies Hannah Murray gave a very Interesting paper on “David as Shepherd and King” Misa Helen MQir save a paper on “Xl&vid as Psalmist.” After the sing­ ing of David’s beautiful psalm “The Lord is My Shepherd,” Miss Beryl Pfaff gave a paper on “David as King.” Miss Margaret Dougall’ sang a very pleasing solo “Dutch Lullaby” accompanied by Mrs. A. Dougall at the piano. Rev, W. A. Young in a few well chosen words expressed his thanks to the young people for their help in making Sunday’s services so successful. (After singing hymn 491 Mrs. Kerslake closed the meeting with prayer. Contests were then given out and Misses Beryl Pfaff and Hannah Murray were the win­ ners. Every­ one welcome. Mr. Voelker, Mr. Wm. Smith spent Monday at the Royal Winter Fair at Toronto. Mr. Voelker intends show­ ing some of his prize stock at the Fair next year. News reached here of the sud­ den passing of Mrs. (Rev.) N. E. Dahons, of Arnprior, leaving her sor­ rowing husband and three children. Rev. N. E. Dahms is pastor of the Evangelical church at Arnprior. Rev. A. E. Pletch, Mr. and Mrs. Dan Oestricher and Mrs. Elizabeth Kuhn attended the funeral of the late J. A. Schmidt, at Kitchener last Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Trevethick, Mr. and Mrs. Bert Kestle and Don­ ald attende'd the funeral of the late Rev. Kirkland at London last Tues­ day. Mr, and Mrs. F. W. Morlock spent Sunday at Chesley. - Rev. John Falconbridge, Centralia will preach at the Evangelical ch-urch on Sunday morning. All are cordially invited to attend. Rev. A. E. Pletch, will be the guest speaker at the Sunday School Rally at Centralia next Sunday-. .'Mr. and Mrs. Louis Hirtzel, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Renny, of Detroit, visited last week with Mr. and Mrs. John Hirtzel. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Haberer and family, Mr. and Mrs. William Deck­ er, of Zurich, visited on Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Fred Gaiser. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Eilber ob­ served their 5'8th wedding anniver­ sary last Wednesday. We regret to learn that they are not enjoying very good health at the present time. Not many couples live to see this anni­ versary. Their many friends join in extending to Mr. and Mrs. Eilber best wishes for many more years of health and happiness together. The snowy weather of last week was not the only sign of the ap­ proaching Yuletide. Merchants re­ ported virtually all their Christmas stock in and in readiness to be put on display shortly. In practically all cases Christmas cards have been out for many days and the stores gen­ erally will soon begin to assume a festive air, Mrs. Charles 'Fahner is on the sick list. We hope for a speedy re­ covery. Mrs. Christina Rogers returned to her home in Ann Arbor, Mich., after a three months’ visit with friends and relatives. Mr. Murray Neil was operated on for appendicitis in Victoria Hospit­ al, London, oh Friday and is getting along fine. Mr. Ed. Mrs. Hopcroft has returned home after spending a few weeks in Tor­ onto. Mr. and Mrs. Milford Koch, of Utica, Mich., spent the week-end with his mother Mrs. G. Koch who is con­ fined to her bed through illness. Mr. and Mrs. Ezra Tieman, Mr, and Mrs. Addison Tieman and Mr, an.d Mrs. Garnet Wildfong attended the Tiernan-Mathews wedding in Barrie on Saturday. Mrs. M'. Mclsaac and children, of Detroit, were week-end visitors with Mr. and Mrs. P. Mclsaac. The Ladies Aid’ of the Lutheran church held a social evening in the basement of the church on Friday evening. The Evangelical Christmas enter­ tainment will be held on Friday ev­ ening December 23rd. The many friends of Mr. Clayton Pfile are pleased to see him able to be out and at his shop again. Mr. Rhinard Willer-t who has. been' in a London Hospital for the past five* weeks has returned home having his first finger amputated which had been mangled in a threshing machine some time ago, Mr. and Mrs. R. Goetz and son! Albert and Miss Ida Goetz, of Chi­ cago spent a few days with friends in Sarnia this week. Successful Month The Walther League society of Zion Lutheran Church of Dashwood got into full swing during November and meetings were well attended. On November the first under the direc­ tion of the pastor Rev. T. Luft, a mission study was conducted bear­ ing on the church’s work among the Indians, Jews and people of foreign tongue. On the following Tuesday the subject was Bible study. The next week the society had the privi­ lege of having Rev. E. Mueller, of Cleveland, a local boy who is work­ ing among the colored people of that city. Rev. Mr. Mueller gave a de­ tailed description of his work among the negroes which proved highly in­ teresting. The society responded with a rising vote of thanks. One week later the society discussed church music and hymnology in which meet­ ing Mrs. Edgar Restemeyer gave an interesting essay on that subject. On the last Tuesday of the month var­ ious business affairs were taken up followed by a short one act play "Who’s a Coward” in which Elmore Gackstetter, Garnett Weiburg and Mildred Luft participated. In this manner Zion Walther League has planned an instructive and churchly programme which s meeting with a ready response and will prove helpful to intelligent church member­ ship. The society intends to report in these columns from month to month. The guest speaker will be Rev. Mr. A. E. Pletch of Crediton Evangelical Church. The special music will be provided by the members of the Truth Seekers’ and Willing Workers Sunday School Classes. Mrs. C. Birney of Exeter and Mrs. ■C. Wilkinson, of Escanaba were vis­ itors with Mr. and Mrs. A. Brooks on Tuesday of this week. Miss Mary O’Brien, of London, spent the week-end at her home here Centralia Y. P. U. On Tuesday evening the Centralia young people opened their meeting with a hymn and the Lord’s Prayer in unison. Business was discussed and Florence Mitchell, Christian Fel­ lowship convenor, took charge of the program. The Scripture lesson was read by Frank Hicks. A piano solo by Helen Essery was enjoyed by all A very interesting topic “The Book of Marvels” was given by Miss Violet Watkins. The meeting was closed with a hymn and the Mizpah bene­ diction. A. held a quilting in the church basement last Thursday when three quilts were quilted for a bale tn be packed this week. Real estate is , still changing hands in the neighborhood. To wind up the Desjardine estate Mr. Leo. Desjardine bought the home farm and Mr. Mansell Mason the 25 acres neai- the village paying good prices for both. Mr. Lawrence Tay­ lor on the Bee Line has bought the hundred acre farm from J. W. Holt possession being taken in all three deals on December 1st. The Home and School Club had a very good attendance Monday even­ ing when Dr. Freel gave a fine ad­ dress and showed some slides. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Geromette celebrated their fiftieth wedding an­ niversary on Tuesday quietly on ac­ count of the illness of Mrs. Geromet­ te. Congratulations are being given to them by a host of friends. Grand Bend Home and School Club The November meeting of the Grand Bend Home and Schoo] Club met in the basement of the church on Monday night. After singing one verse and the choru^ of “Maple Leaf for Ever” Rev. Mr; Beacom led in prayer. The minutes of the last meeting were read and adopted. He gave a talk on "Child Den­ tistry” which gave us much informa­ tion on the care of children’s teeth and reasons for their decay and mis­ placements. He talked about the out­ come of neglected teeth. To make his remarks more real and very clear Dr. Freele showed a good assortment Of lantern slides. These explained what he had just talked about. A vote of thanks was moved, to Dr. Freele for the very fine lecture and the slides which he had shown to The na­ tional anthem was sung and a tasty lunch was served by the Senioi’ girls. WOODHAM A play entitled “Billie’s Goat” will be held in the Orange Hall here on Thursday evening, December 1st under the auspices of the W. M. S. A committee are busy practicing the Sunday School scholars for the Christmas concert, December 23rd. The Mission Circle under the lead­ ership of Mrs. Wilbur Wynn have packed and sent , a bale of clothing including a layette for a baby and Christmas gifts to the needy in the West. Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Rodd spent Sunday last in St. Marys at the lat­ ter’s sister Mrs. Hooper. Mrs. Wilbur Wynn, who has been confined to her home for some time with bronchitis, we are pleased to say, is somewhat improved. Friends of Mr. Milton Brock who is in Victoria Hospital, London, hav­ ing had a cataract removed from his eye, are glad to know that he is getting along nicely. KHIVA Mr. Edward Lippert moved their household effects to Crediton Mon­ day. We are sorry to lose Mr. and Mrs. Lippert from our neighborhood. Mr. and Mrs. C. Wilson, of Byron, spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. H. Eagleson. Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Mason spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Ted Stan­ lake at Grand Bend’.
