Mrs. Gordon Parker who was op­ erated on in Clinton Hospital last Friday for appendicitis is getting along nicely. Mr. and Mrs. Ira Moir, of Exeter, visited a day last week with Mrs. Moir’s uncle and aunt Mr. and Mrs. Wilson 'Carlisle. Mrs, Chas. Wolfe Shirley and Mr. and Cooper were recent Mitchell relatives. Mrs. James Dick who has been in poor health for several weeks is not improving as well as her friends would hope for. There was a heavy rain storm pas­ sed over the Hensall district on Sun­ day afternoon. The rain w*as very welcome as everything was getting very dry. At the baseball game played on the local’ diamond on Friday evening in the Huron-Perth baseball series Hensall defeated the Blyth team 3 to 0. Quite a large crowd was out to witness the game. Mrs. W. Johnston and son Mervyn and sister Mrs'J, Alex Bernie, who have been visiting relatives and friends in this district for several Weeks have returned in Pilot Mound, Man. The County stone gravel outfit that has in. At the recent midsummer exam­ inations of the Toronto Conservatory of Music conducted in Clinton Miss June Broderick was successful in passing Grade 5 piano, Miss Helen Dick passed Grade 7 piano and also obtained first class honors in Grade 2 Theory. Mrs. Cecil Cooper, nee Miss Rose Stone, formerly of Hensall and sev­ eral children, of Lucan, spent a week visiting with her sister Mrs. Eva Stapleton and her father Mr. Wm. Stone. On Sunday Mr. Stone accom­ panied by Mrs. Cooper and children motored to .Stratford to visit another daughter, Mrs. S< Farmer, nee Miss Grace Stone. At tb,e r’ecent June examinations of the Toronto Conservatory of Music held at Clinton, the following pupils of Miss Eleanor Fisher, A.T. C.M. passed very successfully: Betty Mickle, Grade 1 piano, first class honors; Mary Goodwin, Grade 2 Theory, first class honors. (Little Betty Mickle, who is only five years old, showed wonderful musical •ity in her examinations. Mr, Alex. Henry, of Cass Mich., who with Mrs. Henry visiting relatives in Hensall and vic­ inity suffered a severe heart attack while visiting relatives near Wood- stock’. After being confined to. his bed for a week he wds sufficiently recovered to be taken to his home. His son Delbert Henry, came over and took his father and mother home. The services at tne different churches in Hensall w&re only fair­ ly attended on Sunday, so many of our citizens being away on their va­ cation or being at different lakeside resorts for the day. In the morning at the United church the pastor Rev. Mr. Brooks occupied his own pulpit, besides the anthem a quartette was given by Mrs. Geo. Hess, Mdse Flor­ ence Welsh, Dr, Smillie and Mr. W. O. Goodwin. The W. M. S. of the United church held their July meeting in the school room of the church on Thursday af­ ternoon July 7th with a good crowd present. Mrs. Cross presided over the opening exercises after which the Mission Circle put on a very fine program consisting of the following program. S. was held on Thursday last in the basement of the church with a fair attendance, the president, Mrs. Mil­ ler presiding. Particular mention might be made of it being thinty- five years that day since the Society was organized. A portion of the Study Book “Sisters of India” was taken by Miss Currie. The devotion­ al period was taken by Mrs. Miller, Mrs. Allen and Mrs. Reidie. An ac­ count of the fiftieth anniversary held at Avonton was given by Mrs. Miller. Mrs. Scott gave interesting items from “Glad Tidings. Mrs. Oliver gave a very interesting paper after which the meeting closed with singjn.g, a hymn and prayer by- Mr.s. Reidie. Mr. David Bruce while working in the barn (Unloading hay had the mis­ fortune to fail, receiving a severe jar in the neck. He was taken to the hospital at London for treatment but has recovered sufficiently to be able to be brought home on Satur­ day. Mrs. McDonald, of Brussels, visit­ ed a day with her son, Mr. B. O. Donald, of the village. Mr. Andrew MciLean, who been working for some time on road at Russeldale met with a severe accident on Friday last, being struck by a steam shovel. He received a bad knock rendering him uncon­ scious for some time. Fortunately no bones were broken but he was very sore and badly shak.en and re­ ceived some bad bruises. Mrs. McIntosh and Mr. and Mrs. Ramsay, of the village, arrived home on Sunday after a week’s motor trip to Lanark, Picton and other .points. Mrs. Tufford, of Toronto, is at present holidaying at her home here. Eilber was presented with a beautiful electric table lamp by the directors of the Economical Mutual Fire Insurance Co at the Westmount Golf Club House, Water­ loo, last Thursday in recognition of the fact that his father, Mr. Hy. Eil­ ber became agent of the company 60 years go and the Crediton agency has been continued by them ever since. Evangelical Picnic Mc- ■Grand Bend was the scene of an enjoyable outing last Wednesday when the Evangelical Sunday Schoo] gathered for their annual (picnic. The weather was warm enough to entice many of the younger folk into Lake Huron’s sparkling water and to sun themselves on that famous crescent of sand. The picnic always is a gala •occasion. The exciting ball game be­ tween Zurich and Crediton .climaxed a perfect afternoon with a score of 10-6 in favor of Crediton. Tne meeting was held on the lawn after which a social hour was spent and ice cream, cake and sandwiches served to which all did justice. After thanking Mr. and Mrs. Pollock for their kindness they accepted an invitation to hold their next meeting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Elton Curts on August 12th. The minutes of the last meet- ting were read and approved. The question in the Question Box led to a discussion on “Sugarless Canning” It proved very interesting and help­ ful. Miss Reta Rowe gave an inter­ esting word picture of her trip to the British Isles. Community sing­ ing was led by Mrs. A. Hicks, after which the Jolly Juniors sewing club under the direction of Miss Keddy and Mrs. Etherington gave a dem­ onstration of their work and Ann Morgan read the club story. A pres­ entation was then made to Miss Keddy and Mrs. Etherington by the club members to show their appre­ ciation. Misses Helen and Ann Morgan sang a duet, accompanied on the piano by their mother. S. was held at the home of Mrs. Harold Hern with the president, Mrs. Pooley in charge. Hymn 439 was sung and the Lord’s Prayer in unison. Earl and hymn 176 was sung, Mrs. Penrose led in prayer. A reading, “A Previous Enga'gament” was given by Mrs. Pooley. Devotional leaflet was taken by Mrs. Well. Brock.
