Smillie in Toronto. Miss Dorothy Drummond has re­ turned home after visiting with her sister and brother-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Orme McKenzie, in Kincardine. Rev. and Mrs. MacArtney, of Es­ panola, who have been visiting with Miss Hannah Craig and brothers Wm. and John left for their home last week. Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Misses Lois and Marion McLaren returned home Monday after a pleasant week’s vacation with Rev, and Mrs. W. A. Young and family at their cottage near Forest. Mr. and Mrs.. Will .Gram, of De­ troit, were here for the week-end and were accompanied back to Detroit by their sister Miss Ada Gram, Who has been visiting here for several weeks.Mr. and Mrs. John Dingwell and, daughter Miss Helen and friends of Streetsville, visited with their rela­ tives Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Follick and Mr. and Mrs. Edgar McQueen oh Sunday. * . „The many frieitds of Mr. John Craig are pleased to hear he has returned home from Victoria Hos­ pital, London, where he has been for several weeks and is much im­ proved in health. The old Conservative War Horse of Huron County, David Cantelon, of Clinton, nearly 9d years of age, was present for the Conservative Convention as full of fight as ever and was greatly interested in the proceedings and meeting so many old friends. The W. M. S. of Carmel Presby­ terian 'Church held their regular meeting in the basement of the church recently with Mrs. Frank Farquhar presiding, The ’meeting opened with a hymn and the Lord’s ’prayer in unison. Mrs. H. Arnold read the Scripture lesson and the roll call was answered with the text word “Love.” The minutes of the previous meeting were read by the secretary and approved. Mrs. F. Farquhar gave a reading “Little Joe’s Thankoffering” which was fol­ lowed by a hymn. Mrs, W. A, wk­ baren’ gave a very interesting topic on ‘^Sightseeing in Japan.” The meeting closed with a hymn and the Mizpah benediction. Hedden Reunion A quiet family^ reunion was held at the homHe of Mrs. Catherine Hed­ den, of near Hensail, on Sunday, August 22nd, when some 3 6 rela­ tives were present for the auspicious occasion. The reunion being held on Sunday as some members were unable to be present during the week. The day was quietly spent in friendly intercourse recalling in­ teresting happenings of bygone days. Mrs. Hedden is the mother of a family of 12 children all of whom are living, 10 being present for the reunion, she also has 12 grandchildren, 11 being present for the occasion. Mrs, Hedden was formerly Miss Catherine Rothaer- mel, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Manuel Rothaermel, of Credit- on, where her early days were spent- She was married some 36 years ago to George Hedden, of Crediton, who passed away some years ago at St. Catharines. Following their mar­ riage they resided in Crediton where most of their family were born, lat- er moving to Hensall where they re­ sided for some years, later moving to St. Catharines and following, Mr. Hedden’s death Mrs. Hedden moved with members of her family back to Hensall where they have since re­ sided. Members of her family pre­ sent for the reunion together with their wives and families were Mr. and Mrs. William Hedden, Betty, Marie and George, of Hamilton; Mr. Lee Hedden, of London; Mrs. Lee Hedden, of Hensall; Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Hedden, Shirley, Ronald and Roy; Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Hedden, Junior, Bobby, Jaqueline and Don­ ald all of Hensall; Miss Ruth Hed­ den, of Clinton; Messrs. Harold; Herbert, Orville and Russell of Hensall vicinity and Mona at home and one grandson Donald Hedden was also present and who resides with his grandmother. Two. sons Earl of Buffalo, N.Y., and Frank of St. Catharines were unable to be present. Also, present for the re­ union were Mrs. Hedden’s two brothers, their wives and families. Mr. and Mrs. Russell Rothaermel and son Reginald and daughter Mae and friend and Mrs. J. George all of Port Huron and Mr. and- Mrs. William Rothaermel, of St. Cathar­ ines. CREDITON EAST Miss Helen Bullock is holidaying with her grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Gower near Centralia. Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Pfaff and daughter Delores, of Woodham and Mr. Isaac Gower, of near Centralia, spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. J. Bullock. Mr.- and Mrs. Ed. Alexander and children, of the Boundary and Mrs. R. Stewart, of Exeter, spent Sun­ day with Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Mer- ner. Miss Shirley Motz, of Exeter, is holidaying with her aunt and uncle Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Motz. Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Jarvis and family, of London, spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Cliffe and at Grand Bend. Mrs. Robert Carruthers returned home Saturday from London where she has been a patient in St. Joseph’s Hospital for nearly three weeks and her. condition is improved. Mr. and Mrs. George Wright, of Windsor, spent Sunday with the lat­ ter’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Eli Law- KHIVA Mr. and Mrs. F. LaFond and Miss Erma Finkbeiner, of Sarnia, spent Saturday with relatives and attend­ ed the funeral of the late Mrs. Wm. Gaisar, of Crediton. Mr. Arthur Gaiser is at present visiting in Detroit. * Miss Alma Eagleson is engaged with Mr. A. G. Webb. Quite a number from here attend­ ed the Conservative convention in Hensall on Friday evening last. Miss Ida Sweitzer and girl friends of London, spent Sunday at her home here. Mr. H. Haist from California is Visiting his sister Mrs. Roy Ratz and other relatives. Mr. and Mrs. F. La Fond, Sher­ wood and Phyllis, Miss Erma Fink­ beiner from Sarnia called on rela­ tives here and attended the funeral of their aunt, Mrs. W. B. Gaiser of Crediton last Saturday. Mr. Arthur Gaiser is at present Visiting in Detroit with relatives. Mr. and Mrs. EJ. Keyes spent last Sunday in Bayfield with relatives. CENTRALIA Mr, and Mrs. Truman Mills, of Sarnia, Mr, and Mrs. Rex Mills and Marilyn, of Wyoming, were week­ end visitors with Mr. and Mrs. Harry Mills. Marilyn remained for a visit. Miss I-Jelen Wilson is visiting this week in London with her cousins Miss Jean Ogden and Mrs. Harold Sutton. Mr. E, Thompson and daughter Marjorie, of London, were Sunday visitors with Mrs, W- J, Parsons. Mr. and Mrs. G. F. Penwarden and Harold were week-end guests with Mr. and Mrs. M, Sleamon and June at Grand Bend. Mr, and Mrs, J. Mason and family, of Belgrave, visited on Sunday at Mr, and Mrs. Cecil Skinner’s. Miss Mildred Mason, who spent the past week with Miss Beulah Skinner re­ turned home with them. Mr, and Mrs. G. 0. Thompson and Jean, of Mount Forest visited with friends in the village for a few days last week. Miss Beatrice Essery visited with her aunt Mrs. F. Penwarden last week, Miss Greta Pollard and June Sleamon assisted with the program at the ice cream social at Saints- bury on Wednesday evening of last week. Mr. and Mrs. S. Henry, of Wiarton spent the week-end with Mr. and Mrs, Andrew Hicks. Mr. and Mrs. Lome Hicks and Mr. Chas. Dalphin spent Sunday at the latter’s home in Ridgetown. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Taylor and Beth, Mr. and Mrs. F. Bowden and family spent Sunday at Port Stanley. Mr. and Mrs. Alex. McGowan and son Orval and Miss Ella Caldwell, of Blyth, and Mrs. Lillian Afnderson, of Hamilton, were Sunday guests with Mr, and Mrs, Arthur Brooks. Mr. and Mrs. Dave Smith are on vacation this week. Mrs. Arthur Brooks visited for a few days with her daughter Mrs. W. Skelton in Clinton. The Misses Audrey and Marion Burgin, of Toronto, and Mary and Dorothy Mason, of Belgrave, are vis­ iting with Alma and Doris Skinner. We regret to hear of the passing away of Mrs. Robb, beloved wife of Rev. A. V. Robb, of Bluevale. The deceased passed away after several weeks' illness. Rev. Mr. Robb was a former pastor of this church md during their stay here he and Mrs. Robb made many faithful friends who extend their deepest sympathy to Mr. Robb in his bereavement. Centralia W.M.'S. The August meeting of- Centralia W.M.S. was held in the school room of the church with a fair attend­ ance. Mrs. A. MdFalls had charge and opened with a short reading. Hymn 405 was' sung. Bible read­ ings were given by Mrs. George Mc­ Falls and Mrs. Norman Mitchell. The devotional leaflet was given by Mrs. N. Mitchel. Mrs.' C. Skinner and Mrs. A. McFalls favored with a duet. A temperance programme was then given by several members Prayer by Mrs. A, McFalls. Hymn 3 88 was then sung. The business items were then looked after. It was decided to have Mrs. Penrose at the September meeting and invite in another society. Hymn 247 was sung and Mrs. McFalls closed the meeting. The society was the guest of Mrs. Connor and Mrs. Lewis. CREDITON Rev. H. E. Roppel, of Dashwood preached an excellent sermon at the morning service in the Evangelical church to a well-attended and ap­ preciative audience. Miss Pearl Wood, of Exeter, was present and delighted the large congregation with a vocal solo entitled “Beside Still Waters.” We regret to learn that Mr. AL bert Morlock is confined to his bed through illness. We wish him a speedy recovery. We are glad to report that Mrs. Henry Eilber is somewhat improved after her recent illness. Mrs. Bert Will and two sons, Donald and Gordon, of Hazelton, pa., and Mrs. Herbert Adams, of Phila­ delphia, spent last week with their uncle Mr. ^hos. Chambers. Miss Wealthy Schroeder has re­ turned to Detroit, after spending the past month with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Schroeder. Misses Lulu and Ella Morlock en­ joyed a delightful two weeks’ tour along the St. Lawrence visiting Kingston, Ottawa, Montreal and Quebec City where they met Miss Beatrice Dobbs, of London, England who arrived July 29th on the Em­ press of Britain. Miss Dobbs ac­ companied them home and spent a fortnight on the farm before leav­ ing on the S. S. New York. The Late Mrs. Wm. B. Gaiser On August 18th, 1937, there pass­ ed away at her home in Crediton Sarah Schwarz beloved wife of Tie late Wm, B. Gaiser. Mrs. Gaiser was in her 73rd year having been born on October 13th, 18'64, dau­ ghter of Michael and Magdalena Swartz, on the old Schwarz home­ stead northwest of Crediton. In 1890 she was united in marriage to Wm. B. Gaiser who predeceased her three years ago. She leaves to mourn her loss, four daughters, Pearl, of Toledo, Ohio; Elsie, Mrs. J. E. Truemner, of Chesley; Addi- leen at home and Nola, Mrs. Wilkie McEwen, of Denfield; three sons, Emery and Borden at home and Royal north of Crediton, also eleven grandchildren. Two sons preceded her, Chester in infancy and Earl last March. Mrs. Gaiser had been in failing health for some time but became acutely ill only on Saturday Aug. 14. She was of a retiring, home-loving disposition, a kind neighbor and a faithful member of the Evangelical Church. The private funeral was held from her* late residence on Saturday af­ ternoon, the Rev. ^o^pell, of Dash­ wood officiating in “the absence of Rev. Mr. Pletch, several duets were sung by Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hoff­ man. Six nephews of the deceased were pallbearers, Harry and Roy Schwarz, Alfred Wuerth, Edward Finkbeiner, Larne Finkbeiner and Ernest Keyes. (The flowers bearers were Herb Fahrner, Hugo Schenk, Joe Woodall and Harold Fahrner. Interment took place in Crediton Evangelical cemetery. Ethelene and Eilene Johns spent a few days at Plugtown this week. Misses Verda Kellett and Master Georgia are holidaying in Stratford. MisS Winnie Smithson, of St. Thomas, who has been visiting witti friends in this community for the past two' weeks left on Monday to visit with relatives at Onondago, near Brantford. GRAND BEND Miss Reta Pfaff, of London, spent the week-end at her home. Mi’, and Mrs. Art Pickering, of Windsor, are visiting with Mrs. Pickering for a week, Mr. Norman Turnbull has dispos­ ed of eleven lots on the lake front to Detroit people. Mrs. Sim Dewey and family, of St. Marys and Mrs. Hughes and daugh­ ter, of Chesley, are visiting with their mother, Mrs. Nancy Ravelie. Mrs. Harry Kennedy, of Point Ed­ ward, visited Mrs. Gyrus Green over the week-end. Miss Peggie Mollard and Master Billie Mollard, of Windsor, who have spent the holidays with their grandmother returned home Thurs­ day. Mr. Jack Dodds, of Buffalo, is visiting his grandparents Mr, and J Mrs. Bank Geromette. GREENWAY Rev. F. E. Clysdale, of Queen St. United <church, Owen Sound, will have charge of the service in the United Church next Sunday. Master Carman McLinchey, - of Byron, has been holidaying with Mr. and Mrs. W. Hicks. Mrs. L. Lahr, of Detroit, is a guest of her brother Mr. H. Belling. The community was deeply griev­ ed to learn of the misfortune which befell Mrs. W. Sherritt. While re­ turning from attending church on August 15th she fell and broke her leg and was removed to Victoria Hospital, London, where she will be confined for some weeks. Latest reports are she is prog-essing fav­ orably. Mrs. W. Fallis has returned to her .home in Ontario, Calif., after spending some weeks with relatives and friends here: Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence W. Curts welcomed a little daughter (Elean­ or Ruth) to their home on August 17th, Miss Erma Goodhand is visiting her brother‘ Mr, and Mrs. Brenton Goodhand in Detroit. Mr, Henry Belling accompanied his son, Mr. Manford Belling, of De­ troit on a trip to Georgian Bay the latter part of last week. Mr. and Mrs. David Bonis and babe, of St. Marys, spent Sunday last at the latter’s home here, Mr. and Mrs, A. Jamieson. Mr. and Mrs. F. Rodd and chil­ dren spent Saturday last in London. Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Dobson and family, of Kirkton, spent Sunday at the home of Mrs. Hopkins. Rev, Mr. Penrose, of Elimville, attended last Sunday evening ser­ vices here. Miss I. Wilson, of London, is the guest of her uncle and aunt Mr. and Mrs. H. Rodd. Mr. Laing, son of Rev. Mr. Laing, met with a nasty accident a few days ago while driving a mower and the horses ran away. Mr. Laing got cut and pierced pretty badly but at present can get around with the aid of crutches. At present Mrs. Whitfield Switzer is entertaining friends from Detroit. Mrs, Bert Alexander and Rhea, Misses Irene Cornish and Thelma Milligan, Mr. and Mrs. Hilton Og­ den and Mary spent a pleasant ev­ ening recently with their uncle, Mr. Will* Lampkin at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Bowman, Staff a. Mr. and Mrs. Milford Mclsaac who spent their vacation here returned to Detroit on Sunday. Willis Mclsaac, w>ho has been stay­ ing with his grandparents for the past nine years left last week with his parents for Detroit where he will attend Collegiate, The interior of the Lutheran church is being painted and redec­ orated therefore the service will be held in the basement on Sunday. Watts-Held Nuptials A quiet wedding took place at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel on Friday August 13th, at 10.3'0 a,m., when Miss Ida Magdelina Held was unit­ ed in marriage to Mr. Mahlon Am­ brose Watts, son of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Watts, of Windsor, by Rev. Father Fogarty. The attendants were Miss Regina .Miller, of Dash­ wood, and Mr. Louis Drescher, of London. Mr. and Mrs. Watts spent their honeymoon in Windsor and Detroit and will make their future residence in Dashwood. SHIPKA Mrs. Louis I-Ield and son Peter and Mrs. J. Hanover, of Kitchener, are visiting with Mr. and Mrs. E. Stebbins. Miss Grace Willert spent the week-end with Miss Ruth Guenther of Dashwood. Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Sinclair, oi Crediton, spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Mason. Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Stade and son Melvin spent Sunday with relatives in Zurich. Mr. and Mrs. Otto Willert and family visited on Sunday with the latter’s mother Mrs. G. Surerus near Zurich. While helping with the threshing on the farm of Mr. W. Wein near Dashwood, Mr. Gordon Eagleson had the misfortune to fall and sus­ tain a double fracture of his left arm and was badly shook up. He was taken to London for an X-ray examination and it was found that his hip bone was cracked also. Gor­ don is getting along as well as can be expected but will be laid up for some time. Mrs. Andrew Keogh was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital, London, last week for treatment. Her friends wish her a speedy recovery. Death of Mi's. Madden The death of Mrs. Michael Madden occurred at St. Joseph’s Hospital London, Monday, August 1:6th. She is survived by her husband, two daughters Winnifred, , of Toronto and Bernadine at home; three sisters Mrs. Joseph Glavin and Misses Nora and Annie Keogh, of Detroit; one brother Thomas Keogh, Shipka. The funeral was held on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Church of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel with Requiem High Mass celebrated by pastor Rev. Fr. Fogarty. The pall bearers were Hubert Moir, Thomas Ryan, Andrew Morrissey, Benedict Morris­ sey, Hubert McKeever and Austin McKeever. Relatives and friends attended the funeral from a distance were: Miss M. Groom, Toronto; Mr; T.
