Mrs. William Otterbein, who has been seriously ill for some time at her home here lias been taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital, London, for treatment. Mr. and Mrs. Robt. Green" and family, of Port Stanley and former residents of Hensall visited with re­ latives and friends in Hensall vicinity over the week-end. Miss Mildred Follick left Tuesday last for London where will enter Victoria Hospital commence training for a nurse. Miss Follick was one of our most popular young ladies and will be greatly missed: by the choir and other organizations' of the United church and her many relatives and friends. Junior Institute The Hensall Junior Institute met on Wednesday evening at the home of Mrs. W. A. Young. There was a splendid attendance of members and guests and a very enjoyable ev­ ening was spent. The president, Miss Maude McLean, presided. South Huron Agi’icultnral The annual meeting of the South Huron Agricultural society was held at the Commercial Hotel, Hensail, on Saturday afternoon, The meeting was the most largely attended in years and unusual interest shown in the proceedings. The auditors statement showed that the society’s finances wore in excellent condi­ tion and after paying all prize awards and outstanding accounts a substantial amount was carried in the treasury. The date for the Hensail Seed Show was set for Fri­ day, February 26th and it is ex­ pected that the services of Prof. A. W. Mason will bo available as judge. The treasurer’s report was a very encouraging one. It showed that thanks to the efforts of the ladies’ aid, who had raised $619.47 the churcih' was now absolutely free of debt and the books shnved a substantial balance on which to be­ gin a new year. The amount rais­ ed for al'l congregational purposes was $4,097.24, an amount consider­ ably in .advance of any year. Besides this the .. Missionary Society raised $205?01, the Arnold Circle $80 and sion Band $3.81. At the social part of the meeting a very interesting program was carried out as follows: Piano duet ‘by Verda Watson and Gladys Passmore; duet, Dr. Smillie a'nd 'S. Rannie; reading Mrs. Anna McDonald; duet Mrs. Maud Hedden and Mrs. Hess; reading, Mr. G. J- Sutherland entitled “Burn’s Epistle to a Young Friend Leaving Home,” which was very appropriate as the meeting w&s held on Burns birthday. Owing to the absence of the .church secretary, Mr. A. W. E. Hemphill, Mr. W. O. Goodwin act­ ed as secretary. Mr. Mark Drysdale the church treasurer and envelope treasurer gave a very interesting report of the financial and general standing of the congregation. Over $5,000 being contributed for all purposes. Among" .the election of officers were that of Tihos. fihgrritt a Steward to take the place of the late James Robinson, also three ad­ ditional Stewards, Mark Drysdale, A. W. E. Hemphill and Dr. Smillie. A matter of discussion was the ad- visibility of moving the pulpit from its present position to o’ne in front of the choir, which it was thought would bring the pastor closer to the congregation. After some discussion it was moved and seconded the change be made and left In the hands of the managers. Before the close of the meeting a hearty vote of thanks was tendered the pastor, Rev. Arthur Sinclair, also the .officials and all organiza­ tions of the church, especially the caretaker, Mr. Harry Smith to which Rev. Mr. Sinclair replied on behalf of the church officials and himself. Mr. Regan’s funeral: was held <on Tuesday morn­ ing at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. requiem high mass was sung by Rev. Fr. Fogarty as­ sisted by Fr. Cyril Doyle and Fr. Ralph Glavin. Walther Maier’s book, “For Better not for Worse,” and similiar educational features. Lutheran Church Annual Meeting Zion Lutheran Church held its annual meeting on Monday, Decem­ ber 18th. The financial report of the congregation and organizations within the .church were presented and all of them showed a healthy state of affairs. Messrs. L. I-I. Rader and Fred Schlundt were elected to succeed the retiring officers Messrs. Martin Laub and Ernest Rader. Other routine matters of business were disposed of under Wre chairmanship of Mr. L. H. Rader. The pastor Rev. Theo. Luft reported in his parochial report that the con­ gregation numbers 475, baptised members 3i43, communicant mem­ bers 101 voting members. The home of Mrs. Norman Pass- more was the meeting pla^e for the January meeting of the Women’s As­ sociation on Wednesday with a large attendance. The new president Mrs. N. Squires presided, taking the de­ votional period. During the business discussion it was decided to hold the meetings each month. Mrs. Parker and Mrs. Gollings contributed a duet on the program; Mrs. A. Etherington gave a reading ‘The Quiet Room” an enjoyable number. A ten cent tea was served and enjoyed by all. Mrs. M. McCurdy is hostess for the February meeting. Saturday afternoon the Mission Young Ladies arranged a pleasing miscellaneous shower at Mrs. Fergu­ son’s home for Mrs. W. Keller (nee Anna Rohde). Malitor, of Thedford and Mr. John Malitor, of Woodstock, 'were Sunday visitors of Mr. and Mrs. A. Pollard. Mr. Harris West visited this past week with Mr. and Mrs. Myles Mc- Calbe, in Walkerton. Church Has Successful Year The annual meeting of the con­ gregation of the Centralia United Church was held on Wednesday ev­ ening in the basement of the church with a good attendance. The past­ or of the church was asked to pre­ side. Following the brief devo­ tional period the reports for the past year1 were received. The re­ port of the Session showed a net incease in membership of 14 over the preceding year. The Stewards report revealed a, comfortable bal­ ance in the treasury, with all bills paid in full. The Missionary and Maintenance treasurer showed $350 had been raised. The W. M. S. raised $271 and the Women’s As­ sociation over $300. The treasur-r- er of the Parsonage Trustee Board", stated th'at $300 had been paid ou the parsonage mortgage during the' year with the assistance of the W.A. The nominating committee re­ ported and the following elections resulted: Daniel Hodgson and Thos/ Boyes were each re-elected) to the Session for another period of four years; Wesley Webber was re-elect­ ed to the Board of Stewards for four years and Lome Sholdice was elected to fill the position on that Board made vacant by the retire­ ment Powe was elected to the Trustee Board. It was decided to hold the evening service at 7:30 during the months of June, July, August and September. A very hearty expression of ap­ preciation of his services during the year were extended to the pastor. The appreciation of the congrega­ tion was also suitably expressed to the choir, its leader, Mr. L. B. Hod­ gson and pianist Mrs. F. Penward­ en also to the caretaker and to the Sunday. Schoiol superintendent, C. Skinner and to E. Beaver, the Treasurer of the congregation. The pastor expressed his appreciation of the loyalty and co-operation of all. of Wm. Essery. Herman WHALEN The W. M. S. held their January meeting at the close of the W. A. meeting. Mrs. W. Morley was in the chair. The devotional leaflet “In the Footsteps of Jesus” was read by Mrs. Arksey. The treasurer’s re­ port was given by Mrs.. H. Ogden; Mrs. Earl Johnson and Mrs. Frank Squire favored with a vocal duet ac­ companied by Mrs. Thos. Gunning. A letter of thanks iwas read from Mrs. Hazelwood for the plant she re­ ceived at 'Christmas time. Mrs. Gunning took dharge of the Study Book assisted by Mrs. Edgar Squire and Mrs. Geo. Squire.
