Miss Mabie Fee, nurse-in-training in the St. Thomas Hospital, visited over the holidays in town.- Miss Myrna Hudson, of London, spent Sunday here '.with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Colin Hudson. Mr. Robt. Passmore returned to Toronto on Sunday, where he is at­ tending the Toronto University. Mirs. Thios. 'Coleman, Mrs. Wil­ liam Hyde and Mr. Jack Faber were holiday visitors with Brigden rela­ tives. 'Miss Alva Wuerth has returned to Detroit after spending the holi­ days with her parents Mir. and Mrs. Ailf. Wuerth. Mrs. John G. Scott and daughter Mary F. visited fox* a few days last week- with „Mrs. Ed. McQueen and other relatives. Dr. Harry Joynt, of London, and Mr. Will Joynt, of Toronto, spent the holidays here with their mother Mrs. Alice Joynt. Mr. and Mrs. Roy McLaren and Mr. Wm. L. McLaren spent New Years witih Mr. and Mrs. Glen Bell, of Tuckersmith. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Moffatt and children, of Stanley Twp., spent New Years with Mrs. Peter Fishei’ and Miss Eleanor. The Public and Continuation schools which were closed for the holidays re-opened on Monday with a good attendance. Village Clerk Jas. A. Paterson was confined to his home several days last week suffering fr|om an attack of pleurisy. Miss Grace Brock, of London, spent the New Year holiday and week-end visiting her parents Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Brock. 'Mrs. Chas. Jinks left Saturday evening for Windsor, being called there owing to, the illness of her niece Miss Marie Miller. Miss Evelyn Robson, of Neiw York and Miss 'Stella Ro'bsou', of Toronto', were holiday visitors with theii’ sister Mrs, Harry Arnold. Miss Mattie Ellis has returned home after spending the Christmas holidays with, .her sister, Mrs. Fred iSmallacom'be, of Guelph. The merchants of town have de­ cided to close t'heir places of busi­ ness Tuesday evening of each week during the winter months. Mr. Albert Berry, of the Peace River district is visiting in this vicinity with his mother Mrs. John Berry and his sister- Mrs. Bert Ven- ner. Mr. Wm. Fairburn and children, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph1 Hudson and family spent New Years in Exeter, ■the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Brintnell. \ New Years day passed very quiet­ ly in the village. Some of our cit­ izens entertaining friends at home, others visiting out of town or spend­ ing the day in London. Mrs. James A. Bell wh|0' was taken to Clinton Hospital last week 'by Dr. Smillie underwent an opera­ tion on Wednesday evening and her condition is favorable. Her many friends hope for a speedy redovery. Mr. Colin Hudson who has been seriously ill at his home Here for several months is slowly showing softie improvement. He is able to sit up awhile and the arm where the trouble had centered is quite a bit better. Mr. Norman .Sinclair who spent the holidays here with his parents, Rev. Arthur find Mrs, Sinclair, re­ turned to Toronto on Monday, where he Is attending the University, Mr, * and Mrs, Sinclair motored to Toron­ to with him. Mr, Joseph Hudson, wlro spent the Christmas holidays here with his family returned to Westminster Hospital, London on Monday for further treatment. Mr, Hudson is rapidly improving and his many friends hope he will soon be able to return home again. Elected Reeve of Ilay Mr. Geo. Armstrong, was elected reeve of Hay Twp. by a majority of 250 over the present reeve, Alfred Melick, of Zurich, in the ©lection on Monday. This is the first time in a good many years that Hay Twp. has elected a reeve .who lives east of Zurich. Mr. Armstrong has been a member of the Hay Township Coun­ cil for several years taking a very active part in the work of that body, and no doubt will 'be a great addition to' the County .Council. He is a farmer living about three miles ■south west of Hensall, and is also a Hensail ratepayer. His many Hen­ sall friends congratulate him. Willert and Jacob Ratz and found to be correct. The care­ taking of the school was awarded to Mr. L. Dearing. ’ Mr. Gerald O’Rourke is confined to his bed with tonsilitis. His many friends hope for a speedy re­ covery. Eva Penrose had charge of the meeting which was opened with the hymn “O Little Town of Bethlehem” and prayer. Hymn “Hark the Herald Angels Sing” was sung. Eva Penrose read the scripture; she also read the de­ votional leaflet, “Jesus in the Vil­ lage.” Eva Penrose, Mary Johns and Marion Miners led in prayer; Mar­ ion Miners favored the girls with a piano ■ instrumental. The ihymn ‘Standing at the portal” was sung.. Some business was dealt with. The roll call was answered by a Christ­ mas Message. Mary Johns read “Our Christmas ,Story.” Several readings were given by the girls. The meet­ ing was closed with the hymn “Just as I am,” and prayer. A lunch was served at the close. Young People’s Union The Y. P. Union met on Monday evening. The vice-president Mar­ garet Johns opened the meeting with the hymn “I know not why God’s Wondrous Grace” and the Lord’s prayer was repeated in unison. The minutes of the last meeting were read and adopted. .Some business was dealt with. The Christian Fel­ lowship, convener Eva Penrose then took charge of the worship period. The hymn “A Charge to Keep I Have” was Sung. Amos Herdman led in prayer. The Scripture lesson was read by Clifton Brock. Discus­ sion by Lloyd Bell. A musical number by Johnny Ridlfty was much enjoyed. The topic “Christianizing the Christmas. .Season” was given by Allen Johns, Gladys Skinner read a poefti “Christmas Reflections,” The meeting wks closed with the hymn “The Great Physician Now is Neat” and the Mizpah benediction. CREDITON 3Vatchnight Service in the Evan­ gelical church was fairly well at­ tended. The pastor led in an. im­ pressive devotion and gave a very practical address, At th© transition of the old and new year, the. congr©r gation knelt in silent prayer and a poem was offered by the Pastor by Tennyson, while the church bell rang out the old and in th© new, Aifter the service a hearty exchange of New Year’s wishes was extended to one another. Th© next meeting of the Crediton Women’s Institute will be held on Monday, January lilth in the Insti­ tute Hall. Miss Gertrude Lavigne, of Wind­ sor, grand-daughter of Mrs. Albert King, visited with Mr. and Mrs. A. King, a few days last week. . Mr. and Mrs. Harry Dale, of Brampton, spent New Year’s with Mr. and Mrs. F. W- Clarke. Mr. and Mrs Bam King and dau­ ghter Eunice visited on Sunday with friends at Ailsa Craig. IMr. Sam King sold a fine team of horses to Dr. Hagmier of Lake Smith. Th© annual meeting and election of officers of the United Church Sunday School was held on Tuesday evening December 29th with Rev. J. Johnson, in charge. Elmer Desjardine in St. Joseph’s Hospital, London, Tuesday. ZION •The Mission* Band will hold their meeting next Saturday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Jas. Earl. The public school meeting was held on Wednesday afternoon with a good attendance. Mr. Roy Johns is the new trustee. It was decided to instal the hydro and that the school is to be used as a community, hall having a meeting once a month. .Hazel and Laurene Hern, Jean Brodk and Margaret Hern returned to Exeter high school on Monday. A very pleasant time was spent on New Year’s Day at the home of Mr. and Mrs. H. Pfaff Sr., when their children and grand children and great grandchildren numbering around forty gathered there to cele­ brate New Year’s with them.
