Bill Bontliron’s Comeback
Joining the lists of athletes who
have negotiated successful come
backs is Bill Bonthron who, crossed
the critics by leading Gene Venzke
to the finish line in the 1,500 metre
run of the United, States Olympic
trials at Harvard Stadium on Sat
urday. Bonthron won by no- more
than a foot, but despatches - state
that he was looking -around at the
finish and could have made faster
time had that been necessary. Two
years ago, Bonthron was at the
height of his career. His retire
ment came as a surprise but last
winter he announced plans for a re
turn to competition with a place on
the Olympic team in view. He re
fused to compete during the indoor
season, being of the opinion that the
board track races were not beneficial
to a runnel’ with outdoor victories
as his objective. Bonthron’s time of
3.55.3 was good enough of as re
ported h'fe was not extended. He
.and Venzke automatically qualified
for the final Olympic trials to be
held July 11 and 12. Mr. Bonthron
is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Bon
thron, of Detroit, a grahdson of Mrs.
Robt. Bonthron, of Hensall, and a
nephew of James and Fred Bonth
ron- of Hensall.
