Mr. John McLaren, of Seaforth visited with his brother, Mr. Wm. L. McLaren on Monday. Mr. Albert Passmore has return­ ed from a pleasant week's visit with his brother at Delhi. Misses Margaret and Elizabeth Slavin are spending a few days vis­ iting friends at Varna. Mr. and Mrs. John G. Scott, of Cromarty, visited on Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. E. McQueen. Miss Alice Higgins has returned to the Beach-O’-Pines after spend­ ing a week at her home here. Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Sweitzer and children, of Bea:ch-O-Pines visited over the week-end in town. Mr. and Mrs. Archie Hamilton and family returned home from a month camping at Tobermory. Dr. and Mrs. Campbell and child­ ren left this week for a motor trip to Nova Scotia and other points. Miss Florence McDonald, of Lon­ don, visited over the week-end with her mother, Mrs. Agnes McDonald. Mr. Lloyd Passmore, of Delhi, vi­ sited on Sunday at the home of his parents Mr. and Mrs. J. Passmore. Miss Jean Bonthron, of London visited over the week-end with her parents Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Bonthron Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Knight and children, of Kitchener, visited over the week-end with Mrs. Knight’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. Higgins. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Young and Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Young were visitors during the past week with Mrs. A. McDonald and Mrs. Leeper. Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Carlisle, Mr. and Mrs. Walker Carlisle and chil­ dren Elaine and Billy spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Robt. Green of Port Stanley. The Arnold ^Circle of Carmel Pres­ byterian church are holding an after­ noon tea ion the lawn of Mrs. Fred Bonthron. Tea will be served from 3 to 6. Mr. and Mrs. 'Cecil Smith, Mrs. J. H. Smith and daughter Edna, Tor­ onto, Mrs. A. Cook, of Waterloo, called on Mts. Ann Hudson and Mrs. Logan durin’g the week. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Parlimer and little daughter are moving to Wind­ sor where Mr. Parlmer has been working for several months. Their many friends wish them success in their new home. Sunday evening services in the United church will be at the usual time, 7 o’clock, instead of 7.30 as has been during the summer months the pastors of each church taking their own pulipits. Mr. and Mrs. C. 'Cook and son Harry have returned home after a pleasant motor trip to California where they visited with their daugh­ ter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Chelem. The O. B. A. play-oiff baseball game with West Lorne vs. Hensall on the Hensall diamond at 3.30 on Friday afternoon, August 30th. This game promises to be a very inter­ esting game as West Lorne has been playing “A” ball this season. Mr. and .Mrs. Wallace and daugh­ ter’ Dorothy, of Buffalo, and Mrs. E L. Banghman and little daughter Mary, of Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. E. J, Harris and son Max, of Ailsa Craig, were recent visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Fee in honor of Mrs. Fee’s 81st birthday Mrs. Fee’s many friends in Hensall wish her many more happy birth­ days. Funeral of the late George Brown The funeral of the late George Brown which was held from'his late home on King Street on Wednesday afternoon of last week was very largely attended, with interment in the Exeter cemetery. The funeral was conducted by Rev aA. Sinclair assisted by Rev. Mr. Down, of Ex­ eter. The floral tributes were beauti­ ful including a beautiful wreath from the Odd Fellows Lodge, of iwhich Mr. Brown has been a valued member for many years. The pall­ bearers were Messrs. Henry Horton John Coulter, John Zuefle, Thoimas Welsh, Charles Jinks and George Hess. Mr. Brown was one of the pioneers of this district and a suc­ cessful business man for 59 years and will be greatly missed by a host of friends. , Returns to England Dr. and Mrs, James S. Tapp, who have been spending six weeks holi­ days with their respective parents, namely Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Tapp of Hensall and Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Scarron, of WiaHon intend return­ ing shortly to London, England. They sail on September 6th on the Empress of Australia for .Southamp­ ton, Dr. Tapp has been two years in England going on a scholarship given by McGill University and do­ ing research work in the imperial College of Science, South Kensington London. We wish them a very en­ joyable ocean trip and future suc­ cess. Death of Robt, McArthur •The depth of Robt. McArthur, a well kncnyjj apd highly respected resident of Hensplh occurred op Sat­ urday afternoon at the home of his daughter, Mrs, Peter Manson, Zurich after an illness of two weeks. Mr. McArthur was in his usual health until about two weeks ago when he was taken ill and was taken to the home ofi his daughter. Mr. Mc­ Arthur was one of the pioneer resi­ dents of this district. He was born on the MacArthur homestead just east of Hensall, now occupied by Mr Thos. Sherritt. After leaving the homestead farm he mtoved to lot 24, con, 3, Hay Twp., where he was a successful farmer until he retired some 20 years ago when he moved to Hensall. He was a member of the Carmel Presbyterian church, and a elder for many years, he being the oldest elder. In politics he .was a Liberal. His wife, who was former­ ly Miss Margaret Loutett predecease ed him six years ago. .Surviving are four ■ daughters, Mrs. Peter Manson ,Mrs. R. Lamont, of Zurich; Mrs Stewart McQueen, of Hensall; Mrs J. D. Reid, of London, and two sons Sidney and Roy of Hensall; one sister, Miss Jean McArthur, of Wind­ sor. The funeral was held on Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock, a short service being held at the home of Mr. Peter Manson, after which the ifunebal service was held in Car­ mel Presbyterian church. During the service a quartette was render­ ed “When the roll is called up Yonder’’ by Miss Dorothy Daters Mrs. H. Harburn, Mr. R. Y. McLaren and Mr. Wm. McLaren. The service was conducted by Rev. W. A Young, pastor of Carmel church. Interment was made in Hensall Union cemetery. The pall bearers were: Dr. Jas. Bell, Wm. Bell An­ drew Bell, J. C. Bell, J. M. Bell and W. G. Bell. The funeral was large­ ly attended showing the high esteem heldi by Mr. McArthur. Among those from a distance who attended t'he funeral were Miss Jean Mc­ Arthur and Miss Annie Gilchrist, of Windsor; Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Reid of London. WOODHAM Miss Olive Thacker, of .St, Marys, is ‘'holidaying with Miss Audrey Johnson. Miss Netta Shier, who has been home for two weeks’ holidays has returned to London. Mr. and Mrs. Winegarden, of Lon­ don, were recent visitors with Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Squire. Miss Iva Chappel spent Sunday at her home here. Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Wynn took in the Decoration Services at Zion Cemetery on Sunday afternoon last. Mrs. M. Routley, of Kirkton, is spending a few days with Mrs. J. Morley, who has been under the doc­ tor’s care recently. Mr. and Mrs. John Oke and Reta; Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Oke; Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Cottle and Mr. and Mrs. Arlo Copeland and little girls were Sun­ day visitors with Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Squire. Miss Evelyn Camm and Mr. Gra- don Camm are taking in the Toron­ to Exhibition this week and also vis­ iting with friends there. Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Thompson and family visited with Mr. and Mrs. C. Hanna in (London on Sunday last. Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Jaques and family, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Scott, Verna and Audrey and Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Gunning-and family took in Decoration Services at Zion on Sunday last. H. Finkbeiner on Sunday. Miss Muriel Rowe, of Exeter, is visiting with Miss Loreen Hirtzel this week. Extra Crediton Ladies’ Aid The meeting of the Ladies’ Aid and W. M. S. was held recently at the cottage of Mr. and Mrs. H. K. Eilber at Grand Bend. The meeting was in a form of a picnic, the society entertaining the Shipka Ladies’ Aid There wan a goodly number present, A short program was rendered as follows: Hymn followed by prayer by Rev. Pletch; scripture was read by Mrs. A. E. Pletch; welcome ad­ dress by our President, Mrs. Dan. Finkbeiner; reading by Mrs. H. M. Haist; another hymn which was fol­ lowed by a play entitled “Things Worth While” which was well rend­ ered. (A- reading by Mrs. William Sweitzer from Shipka. The meeting was closed with song and prayer. The rest of the afternoon was spent in sports and games. After which a dainty lunch was served. All report­ ed a very enjoyable time. THAMES ROAD . Mr, Wm. Turnbull and Miss Isa­ belle were visitors Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. A. Gardiner. Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Hackney, of Motherwell, were guests with Mr and Mrs/Hy. Rohde on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs, Thos. I. meets Wednesday of this week at the home of Mrs. 'Orville Cann. Mr. Crago, of Salem, has been en­ gaged as teacher of S. S. No. 2, Us- borne. Mrs. D. Coward was a visitor with Mrs. Osborne, of Richmond St. Lon-, don Friday and Saturday. The unusual crops this years are causing the farmers to thresh three times to protect their grain. Fullai’ton Horticultural Society Flower Show The Fullairton Horticultural So­ ciety Flower Show was held in Roys Church on Wednesday afternoon and evening with a very good attendance The showing, though not as large as usual was good. Rev, Wm. Brown of Lucan, acted as judge and also loaned a splendid assortment of gla­ dioli. About twenty-tfour of the Horticultural fans from St. Marys visited in the afternoon when tea and 1unch was served. In the even­ ing a good program was provided opening, with the singing of the Maple Lear. Musical numbers by the mouth-organ trio of Roys; duet by Misses Dorothy and Edna Gallop; instrumental by Miss Jean Hagel- £tein; short addresses from Rev. W Brown and Rev. Mr. Mair, pastor of Roys. Mrs. Williamson also contri­ buted, a fine piano selection. The evening closed with singing the National Anthem. The list of prize winners will be published, next week. STAFFA Rev. O’Brien was taken to Lon­ don for an X-ray on Friday of last week and 'he was found to be suf­ fering from a fractured bone in his shoulder. His many friends will hope for his speedy recovery. 'One of our popular citizens inter­ ested in the welfare of the tomato crop informs us that the tomato worms are almost as big as alliga­ tors and are equally as hideous in appearance. They can be easily ex­ tinguished when 150 pounds lands on them from above a broad-soled s-hoe. Mr. Geo.
