The United Clrurch Sunday school will hold their annual picnic this year on August 2 8th at Turnbull’s Grove. 'Mrs. Peter Fisher is visiting with her daughter and .son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Moffatt in Stanley Township, Miss Susie Morrison, of Belling- ton, Wash., is visiting this week at the home of her uncle, McLaren. Mr, and Mrs. Clarence Mrs. John Parks visited week-end with friends in Oakville and Toronto. Mr. and Mrs. Edwards, of Hamil ton have returned home after a pleasant week’s visit with Mr. and Mrs. Harry Horton. Miss Helen Swann, Miss Irene Douglas, Miss Ada Gramm and Miss Isabelle Manson left this week for a trip through Muskoka. The many friends of Mr. George Brown will regret to hear he has been seriously ill for the past week with slight improvement. Death of Alexander Buchanan Mr. Alexander Buchanan, one of the old pioneers of thi© district, and a highly respected resident of Hen sall, passed away at his home here on Friday, August 9th, in his 95th year. He ha© been poorly for sev eral years, bi© death being caused by a general break-up, owing to his advanced age. He was born in Scotland in 1840, and came to Can ada with his parents when quite a young boy, IMr. Buchanan was the second oldest resident in this dis trict. He owned the 200 acre farm lots 3 and 4, Con. 3, Tuckersmith, now owned by his son Alex., and was a very successful farmer. He wae a prominent member of Carmel Presbyterian church up to the time of church union and later .was a member of the United church, and was also the last surviving member of the building committee that built, the Presbyterian church in 186'6. In politics he was a prominent Liberal. He wa© married twice his first wife being Miss Eliza Ann Newell, and o,f this mafriage there are three sons and a daughter surviving, Alex and William Buchanan at home, Samuel in Aliberta and Miss Margaret Buchanan, R.N., of Port Hurons His second wife was formerly Miss Isabelle Fairburn, who survives him with one son-, Joh'n Buchanan, Lon don and two daughters, Mrs. Geo. Armstrong of Hay township, and Miss Mary Buchanan, R.N., of St. Thomae. There are also three brothers, Dr. Geo. Buchanan, of To ronto; Rev. Duncan R. Buchanan, of Manor, (Sask., and Mr. Andrew Buchanan, of Hensall. The funeral took place from his late home on King fit., Hera-sal'l on Monday after noon. The service was in charge of Rev. A. iSinclair, pastor of the United church assisted by Rev. W. A. Young, pastor of Carmel Presby terian church. Dr. Ivan Smillie sang during' the service, which was attended by scores of friends and neighbors from the village and 'Tuckersmith Twp. where Mr. Buch anan formerly farmed. The funeral proceeded to- Hensall Cemetery for ■burial. The pallbearers were John Wood, James. Smillie, John Mitchell, George Hawkins, Fred Manns, Jas. Simpson. BlCREDITON Crediton lost a well known and respected citizen in the person of William .Smith, who died last Friday His death occurred at the home of his son John in Lucan, where he had made his home for a number of years. He was in his 85th year. He was born in Markham, Ont., son Of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Smith. Im 1878 he twas united in marriage to Nancy Eggert whose union was blest with four sons and two daugh ters, Wilburt, H., of Toronto; John, of Lucan; Walter, of Toronto; Al bert, of Clandeboye, Mrs, Nelson Sinclair, Crediton and Mrs. Bruce Mitchell, Centralia, He is also sur vived by his wife and two, sisterB, Mrs. Sarah Pickering of McGillivray and Mrs. Martha McPhee, of Mount Carmel also twenty-six grand chil dren and three great grandchildren. The funeral was held Sunday from the residence of his son John, of Lucan which was in charge of the Orange Order. Rev. Troop, of Tor onto, officiated. I nterment took place in the 'Crediton Cemetery. The pall (bearers were: Harry Lewis, Ed. Faulder, Jas. Patchen, Robert Gow er, Irvin Scott and John Edwards. Those attending the funeral from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. E. Thompson and family, of Selkirk, Mich,, Mr. R. Pole, Mr. and Mrs. Ot to Pole, of Detroit; Mr. and Mrs. N. J. Griffith and Miss Jennie Shep pard, of 'London, The Haist reunion this year is to be held at Bald Eagle Lake, a few inilee out of Orto.nville, Michigan, on Labor Day, Sept. 2. Master Gerald and Jack England are spending their vacation in Park hill and Brussels. Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Beaver and son, Mr. and Mrs. Doherty and two children,.of Carnegie, Pa., are spend ing their'" vacation at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Beaver. A baseball game and sports were indulged in the af ternoon and the supper was served The oldest member present was Mr. W. Horney, of Owen Sound and the youngest John L. Pym, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. E. J- Pym. A short business meeting was. held at the supper hour and it wa© decided to hold the reunion at Grand Bend and on Civic Holiday. The following of ficers (were elected for 193.6: Pres., John Herdman; Sec.-Treas., Mrs. W. Horney; Sports Committee, Eli Christie, Squire Herdman and Lloyd McDonald; lunch committee, con venor, Mrs. C. Christie. Members were present from Oiwen Sound, Go derich, Exeter, Hensall, Kippen, Eliimville, Crediton, London and Hamilton. Presentation A jolly time was spent on Friday evening when the friends and neigh bors gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Merner. Games- and contests were played and a dainty lunch was served. Before was served Mr. and Mrs. were called to the centre of the room and the following address was read and a table and rocker were pre sented to. them. The service in the church here on Sunday last was in charge of the Sunday School Superintendent, Mr. Cecil Skinner, and the guest speaker was Mr. Spencer Blair, of Chicago, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Blair, of Lucan. Mr. Blair delivered a very interesting and inspiring address to an appreciative congregation. On Sunday next, the services will be in charge of the Women’s Missionary Society and Mrs. Chas. Johns, Elim- ville, will be the speaker. Mr. Kenneth Hodgins visited with M.r .Frank MdLinchey at Varna on Sunday and attended the funeral of the late Mr. Ernest Meyers at Blake. Mrs. Wm. Gardener, of Meaford, Mrs. Durward and children, Simcoe, visited last week with Mrs. Margaret Fletcher. Miss Muriel Steeper, of London1, was a guest with Miss Greta Pollard for a few’ days this week. Mrs. Gordon Hamilton visited at her home in Blyth on Saturday of last week. Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Marks and family, of Winnipeg, Man., called on Mr. Ken. Hodgins on Monday of this week. Miss Sadie Meek and Mrs. Eustes, are visiting with Mrs. Hufbert Neil. The August Meeting of the Wo men's Association was held in the schoolroom of the chur-ch on Thurs day afternoon., August 8th. The July entertaining committee had charge of the devotional exercises with Mrs. W. Baker in the chair. The meeting was opened by the use of hymn 119 after which the 23rd Psalm was re peated in unison. The Scripture lesson was read by Mrs. Baker from the 15th chapter of St. John. Hymn 125. Readings were given by Mrs. Hepburn and Mrs. Alton Isaac; duet by Mrs. L. Hodgson and Mrs. Wm. Baker. Hymn. 129 and Mrs. Bowden took the chair for a short business session. During the meeting it Was decided that the association would not serve a fowl supper this year. Alt the close of the meeting a social hour was spent and a dainty lunch was served by Mrs. W. Isaac, Mrs. J. Pollard, Mrs. W. Bowden and Miss F. Davey, Miss Catherine Jessie Brown, sis ter of Rev. J. J. Brown, of Lucan, a well known minister of the United church, passed away Saturday last. For the greater part of her life Mies Brown resided with her brother. The funeral took place to the -Shelburne cemetery.
