Mr. J-ohu Stacey, of Detroit i« vis­ iting with relatives and friends in Hensall and vicinity. Mr. W. 0. Goodwin is making a number -of improvements to his home on Queen Street. Mr. and Mrs. Percy Clark, Wind­ sor, spent a few days last week visit­ ing relatives in town. Mr. and Mrs. Manual Beaver of Centralia were -calling on friends in town on Monday evening. Dr, Harry Joynt, of Toronto, is spending a few weeks with his mothei* Mrs. Alice Joynt. Mr. and Mrs, Laird Mickle and children left this week to spend two weeks camping at Rondeau Park. Mrs. F. Devereaux, of Regina, is visiting here with her sisters Miss Amy Reynolds and Mrs. Robinson. Mr. and Mrs. Claude Blowes and little daughter have returned home after spending a week at Grand Bend Miss Linda Ortwein, of Toronto, is spending her vacation with h0r parents Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Ortwein. Mr. Thos. Farquhar of Hamilton is visiting for a few weeks at the home of his son Mr. Mark Farquhar. Miss Annie Huiser, of Windsor, is visiting here for a couple of weeks with her parents Mr. and Mrs. C. Huiser. Mr. and Mrs. Wm. McLean, Ham­ ilton, spent the week-end with Mrs. McLean’s parents Mr. and Mrs. John Pass-moire. Reeve Jones was in Goderich on Saturday attending a meeting of the Huron County Children’s Shelter Committee. Miss Gladys Douglas R.N., is nurs­ ing Mr. Wm. Kinsman, of Tucker­ smith, who is -seriously ill at his home there. Misses1 Dorothy McQueen, Mildred Rollick and Mr. Robt. Passmore are in Goderich this week attending summer school. Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Do-uglas, Hyde Park, were week-end visitors with Mrs. John Johnston and Miss Mar­ garet Johnston, The Hensall voters list for 1935 are now out and -contain the names -of 592 voters; Part 1, 440; Part 2, 100; Part 3, 52. Mrs. Sarah Micolson,, -of Iron Bridge, New Ontario, is a .guest at the home of Mirs. Wm. Luker and Miss Gladys Luker. Mr. and Mrs. S. Fitton, Mr. E. Heywood and sister, Mrs. H. Par­ sons, of Exeteir, visited with friends in Town on Tuesday. Mirs. L. R. (Smith and children, Russell and Betty, of Detroit, are visiting with friends and relatives in and around Hensall. Mr. Geo. Douglas accompanied by his brother Peter Douglas, of Sask­ atoon are visiting with their brother Robert at Kapascasing, New Ont. Miss Mildred iScruton returned home .Saturday after visiting heir brother and sister-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Harold Scruton at Port Dover. Mir. and Mrs. Cecil Knight and Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Knight and children of Kitchener are visiting With rela­ tives in Hensall and Beech-O-Pines. Rev. B. H. Farr, of St. Johns, the newly appointed rector -of St, Paul’s Anglican church with his father and mother have gio-t nicely settled in the rectory. Mr. and Mrs. N. BatterSby spent Sunday with relatives at Collingwood Mrs. Battersby mother. Mirs. Paul re­ turned with them and will visit here for a time, Mr. R. J. Moo-re and Miss Irene Douglas principal and assistant of the Hensall Continuation School were in Toronto- last week marking ex­ amination papers. A scheduled, baseball game in the Western Counties’ League Series was played here -on Monday evening be­ tween the Ilderton- and Hehsail teams Ildert-on winning 5-4. Mrs. Louis S-mltli and children, of Detroit, aftenependtog the past week with relatives in Hensall left on Tuesday for Woodstock where she will visit for- a few days, Haying is in full swing in the Hensall district with a very heavy crop. The fall wheat is turning fast and will soon be ready for the bind­ er. All -cvoips are very heavy. The -many friends of Mr, w. B. Davidson will be (pleased to- hear jlie is improving in health after being confined to his home for the past | three weeks with iliness- Mrs; McConnell, of Toronto, wi­ dow of the late Rev, McConnell, former pastor of the Presbyterian -church here was the guest last week at the home of Mies Hannah Craig. Mr. and Mrs, Edga-r McQueen and daughters, Misses Dorothy and Elva and Mrs. -Smith and children of De­ troit visited on Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Sweitzer at the Beech-O- Pines. Mrs. Jas. Ba-rnett, of Toronto, who was here for the Reunion and spent a couple of weeks visiting friends in town is spending a few days visiting friends in Seaforth before returning to Toronto. * Miss Emma Pfaff R.N., of Inger­ soll, who has spent several months visiting relatives and friends in this district has returned to Ingersoll where she has a position at the Gen­ eral Hospital there. Mrs. John Berry is visiting with her daughter Mrs. Bert Venner of the Thames Road. Mrs. Berry is suffer­ ing from cataracts on her eyes and ts nearly blind and will -Iwuw to have another operation. Mrs. Gidien H-obki-rk, and daughter of Regina are visiting ■ with Mrs. Hobkirk’s brother, "Mr, James Rob­ inson and other relatives and friends in town. They were former resi­ dents of Hensall. Mr. Jas. McMartin and daughter Ruth, of Barre, visited over the week-end at the home of M-rs, Robt. Bonthron, where Mrs. McMartin has been for t-lie ipast few week and has been in-very poor health, but is slowly improving. Mrs. Mabel Broughton-Bellette, authoress, formerly Miss Mabel Mc­ Lean, of Hensall, has presented to the Public Library a copy of her second novel “The .Shadow on the -Steppe,’’ Mrs, Billette regretted very much that she was unable to attend the Reunion and wished to be re­ membered to her many friends. The W-M.S. of the United church held their regular monthly meeting in the school room of the church with the president in the chair. The meeting was opened by singing hymn 53 after which a devotional leaflet was read by M-rs. Wm. Doug- all and Mrs, Lammie lead in prayer. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and adopted and the roll called. A motion was made and carried that the August meeting be withdrawn. Hymn 183 was sung followed by readings by Mrs, J. El­ der, Mrs. Hobkiirk and Mrs, Cross after which the meeting closed by singing Hymn 146. A -reception was held in the Town Hall on M-onday evening, July 15th, in. ihio-nor pif Mr. and Mrs. Earl Dick of -Chiselhurst, who were just re­ cently married. The hall was crowd­ ed and an enjoyable time was spent During the evening Miss Beatrice Drover of Chiselhurst read an appro­ priate address and Mr. and Mrs. Dick were presented with a bedroom suite and half a dozen kitchen chairs and a number loif other articles from their many relatives and friends who wish them -continued happiness1 and prosperity. A dainty lunch was serv­ ed. Death, of James A. Bell One of the most prominent and best known farmers of Tuckersmith passed away at his home -on the Lon- don Road just south of Hensall on Saturday in the person of James A.' Bell. He liad been ill for over two years suffering from.- cancel* and in spite of the best medical care and nursing, nothing could be done for him and he passed away on Saturday He was a son o-f the late Wm. and Mrs. Bell and was born ion the home­ stead farm 67 years ago and spent all his life on the same farm. He was a very successful farmer, his farm being one -of the shodr places on the London Road. For years he' was: a member of the Tuckersmith Township Council, an elder of the Carmel Presbyterian Church and was a Liberal in politics. Forty-four- years ago he married Miss Margaret Fairbairn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs* Elliott Fairbairn who survives him with three sons and one daughter Wm. R. Bell, Hensall; Elliott, -of To­ ronto and Roy J, on the homestead; Mrs. J. P. -Campbell of Windsor and tw-o sisters Mirs. John R. Hobkirk, o^ Seaforth and Mrs. Alfred Taylor, of Hensall. The funeral which was one, of the largest seen in this district for years was held at his home Dot 4, Con. 1, Tuckersmith and was con­ ducted by his pastor, Rev. W. A. Young, of the Carmel Presbyterian church. The choir of the church was at the funeral and led the singing; a quartette “The Old Rugged Cross” was given by Rev. W. A. Young, R. Y. McLaren, W- A. McLaren, and J. Bengough. 'the -honorary pall bearers were Robt. McArthur, John Craig, T. Hudson, Peter Mlolir, Stewart Mc­ Queen, John Wood and R. D. Bell. The pall bearers were Andrew Bell. John M. Bell, Wm. Bell, Win. G. Bell, Alfred Taylor and Elliott Fair­ burn. Interment toio-k iplace in the Hensall Union Cemtery. The floral tributes were very beautiful showing the deep respect of the community where he spent dll 'his life. CREDITON Miss Grace Hotter, of Flint, Mich.; is spending a few weeks at her home ihere. Aidworth, of Windsor, visited at the home of Mr- and Mrs. Ed. MorRck last week, Miss Nola Faist, Miss Velma Guet- tinger and Kenneth Lillow returned on (Sunday after spending two weeks in Chicago. Rev. and Mrs. A—E. Plletch, Ella Morlock and Alma Ratz are attend­ ing the Canadian Kesic'k at Muskoka Howard and Carl Krueger of Wa­ terloo, spent Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Fahner. M-r. and Mi’s. Ed. pietdh and son Percy, Ayton, visited on Sunday at the Evangelical parsonage. Mr. and Mrs. Russell! -Clarke and son Glenn, of Detroit, spent the week-end at the home of Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Clarke. Mr. and Mrs. Merner Eilber and family, of, Detroit, spent a week’s va. cation with Mr. Charles Eilber. Miss Thelma Neeh, cf London, is spending a month’s vacation at her home in Stephen. Miss Gertrude Hoist, of Goderich, spent Sunday with <li-er -parents Mr. and Mrs. Chris. Haist. Mrs. Mary Haist, Mrs, C. Trick, Miss Shirley Young and Herb Young spent Sunday at Tavistock. Mr. Henry F. Eilber and Mr. God- -frey Nicholson are getting along as well as can be expected after under­ going operations at St. Joseph’s Hos­ pital, London. I Miss Helen Hill, of London, is spending t'he week with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Garfield Hill. Mr. Lloyd Sippell of Hanover, js visiting friends in town. The Crediton Y. P. Society of the United Church held their annual pic­ nic at Bayfield on July 13th. About thirty of the young people were able to attend and were conveyed by gen­ ial Mr. Wm. Roeiszler in ,his new truck. ‘The day was spent in games, swimming, boating and feasting. In the afte-rnoan soft ball was played, AJwinna Hill and Mary Lamport be­ ing captains, The day was ended by spending a'bout two hours at Grand Bend which topped off a perfect day, Castle-Brown At Crediton a quiet wedding took pllace in the Evangelical parsonage when -GCorge Lansborough Castle and Elizabeth May Birown were married. The bridesmaid Was Miss Pearl Fahner and the g-rooms- . man a brother of the groom, Regin­ ald Castle of -London, Ont. After the ceremony dinner was served in the bride’s home. Brothers and sisters of the groom and bride were present. Mrs. Eli Brtown and Clara Fahner served at the tables. After a short trip to the border cities the couple will reside in London, Ontario. ■ , Evangelical S. S. Picnic The Evangelical Sunday School picnic was held last Wednesday; at Grand Bend. The picnic was in charge of Chester Mawhinney as gen­ eral convenor assisted by Art Amy, G. E. IFaist, H. K. Eilber, E. Fahner and F. W. Morlock. 'The ipupils of Miss (Lorraine Waas are to be congratulated on passing their entrance examinations so suc­ cessfully, two passing with honors. On Saturday of last week Mr. Geo. Earl purchased the house of Mr. H. W. Doerr, of Exeter. The community will be sorry to loose M-r. and Mrs. Earl from their midst. Mr. and Mrs. Milne Pullen, of Whalen, spent Sunday with the lat­ ter’s parents Mr. and M-rs. George Earl. Miss Ella Routly spent the week­ end with her sister Mrs. Alex Crago. o - ' * * * WOODHAM The J-uly meeting of the W.M.S. met Thursday afternoon last at the home of Mrs. Wesley- Shier with twenty two members and three vis­ itors present. The meeting- opened in the usual way and a reading was 'given by the president, Mrs. Fred Doupe after which Mrs. Milt. Hoop­ er read the Scripture lesson. Mrs. Harvey Parkinson and Mrs. William Rodd gave reading and Mrs. Charles Johns of E'limville was the guest for the meeting and delighted the au­ dience with two very appropriate recitations. Mrs. W. Switzer gave a splendid talk on the Study Book at the business part of the meeting it was decided to have a special meet­ ing in August and invite some of the neighboring auxiliaries and also the Mission Circle girls. The meeting was brought to a close by the presi­ dent pronouncing the Benediction af­ ter this the Women’s Association had a short meeting with the presi­ dent Mrs. Wesley Shier in t-he chair. At the close a ten cent lunch was served by the hostess and her as­ sistants. Rev. M-r. Grant, of Galt, .took the services here last Bunday morning and preached a very interesting tem­ perance sermon. -Several of our young ladies from this locality left last Sunday after­ noon to camp at Grand Bend for a week. ham, Mrs. H- Renstemeyer and son Leon­ ard and Mr. and Mrs. Jas.
