Miss Annie Rands, who ha® been in poor health for some time was taken to London a few weeks ago for treatment at the home of a rela tive. .She is beginning to improve and her many friends hope she will soon, be able to return home. The Ladies’ Aid of the Carmel Presbyterian church, held their first meeting of the new year on Friday afternoon at the home of the presi dent, Mrs. Bertha Bell. A good number were present and after the business of the meeting wa® over a dain'ty lunch was served. At the annual meeting of the Un ited church Sunday School which was held on Monday evening Mr. Henry Phile wa® re-elected Supt. for the third year in succession. The other officers and teachers were all re elected. Lome Elder, secretary- of the Sunday School read a very flourishing report both financially and in membership. The annual meeting of the Wo men’s Association of Hensall United Church was held on /Thursday, Jan. 3rd. The Mission Band of the United church held their regular meeting on Sunday afternoon with a good at tendance. The three-act comedy farce "Silas Smidge from Turnip Ridge,” spon sored by the Chamber of Commerce, which i.s being put on in the Town Hall, Friday evening, January 18th, at 8 o’clock, promises, to be a. real treat. This play was to have been put on before Christmas, but on ac count of illness, of one of the lead ing actors was held off until January 18th. Etherington injured in Accident Ai bad acciden't happened to Mr. Albert Etherington, of Usbornb Twp on Saturday evening last while un loading horses in front of Dr. Camp bell’s residence on Main St. He had brought a number of horses bo Hen sail on his tru)c,k and after unload ing one he again went 'to the back of the truck and was. kicked in the .face by one of the animals. He was piejked up in an unconscious condi tion and taken into Dr. Campbell’® residence, where Dr. Campbell, V.S., gave him first aid till the arrival of Dr. Smillie. His face was badly cu't but was able later to be removed to his home where he is still in a serious condition. The Etherington family seem to have more than their share of accident® as only about two weeks ago his daughter got her hand caught in a meat grinder and had to have a part of one finger taken off. Laid, to Rest The funeral of the late David A. Cantelon, who died in St. Joseph Hospital, London, early on Wednes day morning, January 2nd, after an illness of several wee|ks, took place from hi® late home Queen ‘S't., Hen- sail, on Friday afternoon, Rev. Hopcroft, Dashwiood, Ont., Dear Friend,—• We received part of your bag of flour and wish to thank you and all the friends who helped make up the relief car for thinking or us in time of need. A committee was formed and I think each family was treated fair. Some few had no crop and no garden so they got more out of the car., I never had pastry flour to use before and I like it fine. We take our own wheat to the mill and get flour and bran and shorlts. We are having real cold weather. Hoffman and family .re ceived, the ®ad news of the sudden death of Mrs. Arthur Benedict, nee Jennie Hoffman in the Kitchener Hospital on Saturday evening. She leaves to mourn her loss her bereav ed htfsand who is in spoor health and seven children also one brother, Mr. Will Hoffman in Zurich. Mrs. Bene dict was born and rai®ed here mov ing to Kitchener about twenty years ago. The funeral] is being held on Tuesday afternoon. Mr. Charles Hoff man left Monday evening to attend the funeral. The sympathy of this community is extended to the be reaved. SHIPKA The regular meeting of the Lad ies’ Add was held on January 3rd at the home of Mrs. Ed. Lamport. The president, (Mrs. Wm. Sweitzer pre sided. The meeting was opened by singing, "What a Friend We Have in Jesue” with iprayer by Mrs. E. Keys. Scripture lesion was read by Mrs. Lorne Finkbeiner, 12th chapter of 1st Corinthians. Roll was called and reports were given. A letter was read by the Secretary from the Lon don Advertiser, thanking the Shipka Ladies’ Aid for the box sent to the needy; also letters of thanks was read from the shut-ins who received treats at Christmas time. A dainty lunch was served by the hostess. Meeting losed by '^repeating the Lord’s prayer in unison. The re mainder of the afternoon was spent in quilting. (Last Sunday being Missionary day in the Sunday School a reading was given by Miss P. Keyes entitled "Indian Homes in Canada.” Mr. and Mrs. Les Adams and Don ald, of Hyde park, returned Thurs day after spending New Years day with relatives there. Wm. Mason and Miss Jean Mason of Parkhill returned home after vis iting last -week at the home of Mr. andi Mrs. L. Schroeder. CENTRALIA Mr. and Mrs. G. F. Penwarden and Mr. Thos. Neil attended the funeral of the late Mr. Alex. McDonald on Tuesday of this week. The Sunday School executive spent a social evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Skinner on /Monday evening of this ween. Games and contests were enjoyed during the evening. Rev. R. N. Stewart made a short speech in appreciation of tile splendid work in connection with the Sunday school which Mr. Skin ner lias done during the past year, Mr. skinner wias then presented with a Remembrance from the executive. Lunch was served. The regular monthly meeting of the W. M. S. was held in the school room of the church On Tuesday afternoon of this week. The meet ing was opened by singing hymn 94 followed by prayer by Mrs, Arthur MCFalls. The Devotional Leaflet was read by Mrs. George Thompson. Missionary leaflets were read by Mis® Flossie Davey, Mrs. Arthur Mc (illll Fall®, Mrs. J. Blair and 'Mrs. Lorne Hicks, Hymn 99 was sung. Tem perance paper was read by Mr®. F. Bawden. Mrs. M'cFalls then took the chair for a short business'- ses sion. The prayer service held in the church here on Tuesday evening of this week was not well attended on account of the bad roads. The speaker was Rev. Mr.. Stainton of James Street United church, Exeter who delivered a very interesting and inspiring address. The regular monthly meeting of the Woman’s Association was held in the schoolroom of the church on Thursday afternoon, January 3rd. Mrs. Skelton had charge of the de votional exercises. The meeting was opened by the use of hymn 310, followed by prayer, by the leader. The Scripture lesson was read by Mrs. G. 0- Thompson. Hymn 288 "A New Year’s Message” was then given by Mrs. Maltby. Mrs. Baw den took the chair for the business. '■The annual reports were given. The treasurer reporting a substantial bank account. The .association div ided into two groups for the pur pose of making money, each group to work a month. Group number: 1 to commence on January 15 th. Treffry who met with the misfortune of falling and injuring her knee was taken to (Seaforth hos pital for treatment. The W. M. S. of iStaffa United 'Church will hold, their next meeting at the home of Mrs. John Leary on Wednesday afternoon. On Thursday 'afternoon, the Ladies* Aid of the chur’ch will hold their meeting at the home of Mrs, Albert Norris. The result of the municipal elec tion here on Monday of this week were as follows: Reeve, Jos. Nagle; councillors, Jos. Atkinson, Robert Burchill, William Kay and Clifford Dow. ZION Mr. and Mrs. David Stephen and family spent New Years Day with the former’s sister Mr. and Mrs. E. Hern. Mr. and Mrs. H. Hern and fam ily spent New Years Day at the home of Mr. and Mrs. M. Dobson, Kirkton. Mr. and Mrs. James Earl and fam ily and Mr. and Mrs. Allan Jaques and family spent Wednesday of last week at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Melville Gunning. Miss Lorraine Waas, of Granton, has resumed her duties as teacher at the school. A numer of scholars have the Whooping cough. Miss Minerva Brock is at present at 'the home of her sister Mrs. E. Ward at Union. Mr. Charles Jaques lost a valuable horse last week. The W. M. S. held 'their first meet ing of the year at the home of Mfe. Harold Hern on Friday afternoon of last week. There was no preaching service bn Sunday owing to the illness of the pastor. Mary Earl, Lau.rene Hern and Ken neth Hern, resumed their studies at Exeter High School on Monday. Mar garet Hern is confined to her home with the mumps. We are sorry to learn that Mr. G. Brock Is under the doctor’s care. HIb many friends hope for a speedy re covery.
