Mr. and Mrs. Ray Pfaff, of Delhi, are spending the holidays here with relatives. During the winter the stores will be closed on Tuesday evenings as in former years. Miss Anna Tiernan, of Dashwood, was a holiday guest with Mr. and Mrs. C. Cook. Mr. Mayard Herman, of Toronto, was a New Year’s visitor with his friends in town. Mr. Howard Hemphill, of Toronto, University is spending the holidays at his home here. Mr. and Mrs. J1ohn Reid and family of Condon, spent Neiw Years with relatives in town. Mrs. Lippart, who is spending the winter here with her daughter Mrs. George Fee, is seriously ill. Mr. Lloyd Passmore and ifriend, of Delhi, spent New Years here with Mr. and Mrs. John Passmore. Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Cassidy, who spent the holidays with relatives at Otterville have returned home. Mr. and Mrs. Laird Mickle and children spent New Years with Mr. Mickle’s parents .at Ridgetown. IMliss Grace Brock, of London, Is spending New Years here with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Brock.. Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Coles and family of Listowel, spent Naw Years here with Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Good win. Miss M. Ortwein has returned to Toronto after spending Christmas with her parents and other relatives here. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Obray, Of London spent New Years with Mirs. Obray’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. S. Hudson. Mr. James Robertson received word last week of the death of his brother-in-law, Mr. Rofot. Tail, of Alyrner. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Scruton, Who spent the holidays with relatives here have returned to their home at Port Dover. Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Sweitzer, of Be'ach-O’-Pines, after a very pleasant week’s visit with relatives in town returned home. Some who were away over New Years are having difficulty to re turn as the roads are very heavy for motor traffic. Mrs. Maude Hedden and little Donald are visiting with Mrs. Hed den’s sister Mrs. Kerr, near iSua- bu-ry, New Ontario. Mrs. Chas. McDonnell has return ed home after spending several weeks visiting her niece Miss Dolly Dickson of Goderich. Miss Marion Hemphill, of Whitby Ladies’ College is spending the holidays here with her parents (Mir. and Mrs. A. W. E. Hemphill. Dr. A. R. Campbell ha© .been con fined to his home for the past week through illness. His many friends hope to see him around again. New’s Years Day passed very quietly in the village. Owing to the storm and bad roads there were very few visitors here for the holiday. A number of visitors here for Xmas were unable to return to their homes on Wednesday as intended, owing to the storm which blocked the roads for motor traffic. Dr. and Mrs. Collyer attended the funeral of the doctor’s mother in London on ‘Thursday. Mrs. Collyer died at her late home, Hyland Road, London on Christmas Eve and was in her 60th year. Miss Margaret McQueen, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stewart McQueen of the Boundary, (who has been in Victoria Hospital, London, for some time for treatment is now recovering nicely. Mrs. Geo. Smale was taken to> the Seaforth Hospital on Monday of last week to be operated on for appen dicitis. Mrs. Smale was nursing a pa tient when she was suddenly stricken The operation was successful and she is recovering nicely. Mr. Hendrie who lias been supply ing at Delhi fo'r several weeks will take charge of the worlki of st. Paul’s 'Anglican church here beginning on Sunday, January 20th and Will re- main for a time. For the next two Sundays the pulpit will be filled a supply. Harold Higgins is confined to room this week suffering with a vere cold. He was in Woodstocki on Wednesday leaving for home in the evening. They made fair pro gress through the storm until they got past Lucan when they got in to a line up of motor trucks and cars struck in the snoiw and had to spend the rest of- the night there. After a great deal of trouble they (got thro’ the snow and g'ot home about eleven o’clock on Thursday morning. As there was no municipal elec tion in deal of citizens I held on Simpson, labor, was elected Mayor. In the evening full returns were re ceived over the radio. We believe that it is a good idea to> have the election earlier, the weather is gen erally better .and voters are not away for the holidays and it does not interfere with the Christmas spirit. The Mission Band of the United Church gave a concert in the school room of the church on Friday even ing which was well attended by par ents 'and their friends of the young people. Rev. Arthur Sinclair pas tor of the church acted as chairman. There was a splendid program given all taking part and doing exception ally well. The skating rink committee of the Chamber of Commerce have had a number if men at wo>nk: getting the ice ready. On Monday ‘afternoon there was free skating, for the chil dren and the rink was oipen to the public at night. Monday, Wednesday and Saturday have been set for the public and Saturday afternoon will be free to al'lj children under 14 years. All hockey games will be in charge of E. Shaddick and for the carnivals James A. Patterson will be in charge. It is to be hoped that a good hockey team will develop this winter. Hensall used to have good hockey teams and there -are plenty of good players here yet and a few good 'hockey games would be a 'good attraction • for this winter. Parker, sister, Mrs. Brooks, of Mitchell. The deceased was in his 60th year. Quite a number enjoyed tile first skating of the season on the local rink last Saturday evening.. The ice was in very good condition.' Misses Erma Fahner and Alma Smith, of London, spent ,a few days this week with their parents. Mrs. Edward Fahner met with a painful accident on Friday morning when she fractured tone bone and .splintered two smialler bones in 'her left leg. .She was walking on some waxed linoleum when she slipped and received the injury. He is proud to say that the township has no relief pro blem, The people .of Stephen town ship are a thirty people although I the past few years have been very trying owing to the depression. There has been consderable road con struction which has helped the un employed. There are good roads throughout the township.’ The tax es have been lowered during 1934 and there is only a small balance of $2'500 of uncollected taxes to be paid. This will be Mr. Sweitzer’s seven till year in the county council and he is in line tor the Wrirderiship :of the County tor 1935. Oantclon There passed away early Wednes day morning at St. Joseph’s hospital London, one of Hensall’s best known citizens and business men in the person of David Oatatelon. Mr, Cantelon had been in poor health for some time, suffering severely at times, and was taken to the London hospital late Monday evening, .but little hope was held for his recovery. He was born in Clinton, a. ©on olf the late William and Mrs. Cantelon. When a young man he came to Hen- sall and started a produce business, which he successfully conducted for over t35 years and later went into the coal business. He retired from business a. couple of years ago, sell ing out to Mr. W. R. Davidson. He was a member of the United church, and a Conservative in politics and always took a great interest in public affairs, Besides his widoxv, he leaves to mourn his loss one son, Ferris Cantelon, principal .of the Continuation School at Scrhmberg; two blethers, Wm., of Toronto and J. E. Following the opening ex ercises Merle Squire read the Scrip ture Lesson. A very satisfactory re port of the year was given by the Treasurer. Readings were given ny Mrs. Gunning, Gladys Squire and Ruth Hodgson. Our next meeting to be held at the home of Mrs. Frank Squire. The following officers'were elected for 1935: President, Mrs’. W.
