Mr, and Mrs. A, W- E. Hemphill spent the week-end with relative? in Detroit. Miss Isohel Turnhull, Of Exeter, spent a few days last week with Miss Helen Smith, a Reeve Geiger is in Goderich this q^ek attending the June session of tlie County Council. Miss Vair and Miss Minnie Gibbs, of Toronto, visited last week at the home -of Mrs. Roht. Ronthron. Miss Mary Buchanan, <of London, spent a few days with her parents, Mr. and Mrs.- Alex Buchanan. Miss Eleanor Fisher is spending a few days visiting with her sister, Mrs. Moffat, of Brucefield. Bev, Mr. Ashdom, of Toronto will conduct the services in Carmel Presbyterian Church next Sunday. Miss Ellen Pylbus, of Windsor, visited over the week-end with re- altives in Hensall and the vicinity. Mrs, J, W. Bonthron is confined to her home with illness. Her many friends hope for a speedy recovery. Owing to the great number of cases of Measles in the village, the Public School is closed down this week. Mr. and Mrs, Alex, McMurtrie, of Toronto, spent a few days this week visiting with relatives in town and vicinity. Mrs. David Christie and son, Nor­ man, of Farquhar, spent a day last week at the home -of Mr. Wm. L. McLaren. o Mr. and Mrs. Manley Jinks and family are spending a few weeks vis­ iting with Mrs, Jink’s parents on the Goshen Line. The men of the congregation of the United Church intend putting on a Strawberry Festival in the Church on June 24th. Services in the Carmel Presbyter­ ian Church were well attended on Sunday last with the Rev. Mr. Mc- Kaye, of Levis, Que., having charge of the services. JJMr. Garnet Smallacombe, of Wblph, a former Hensall boy spent the week-end visiting with friends in town his friends here are always glad to see him. At the United Church Rev. A. Sinclair occupied the pulpit and in the evening Mrs. Dr. Reid rendered a very delightful solo entitled “The City Four-Square." Mrs. Dr. Reid returned to her home in Port Rowan, this week af­ ter a pleasant visit with her parents here. She was accompanied home by her mother Mrs. Edward Sheffer. The Village Council have pur­ chased a safe from the Petrie Co., of Toronto, and have placed it in the Clerk’s Office in the Town Hall so that the Clerk would have a prop­ er place to keep the valuable papers of the town. The baseball match on Friday ev­ ening between Exeter and Hensall at Exeter resulted in favour of Exeter On Monday evening , a match was played on our ilocal diamond between Hensall and Crediton, Crediton, win­ ning the game. Rev. Mr. P. Parker, rector of the St. Paul’S Anglican Church enter­ tained the choir of his church at the rectory on Thursday evening last. A social hour was spent after which ice cream and cake were served. A very pleasant time was “spent. The Welfare Youth Club of the Carmel Presbyterian Church held their regular meeting on Monday evening. After the opening exercises an instrumental was given by Miss Margaret McLaren followed by a .reading by Mr. Wm. Graig. A solo 'was given by Margaret Dougall af- ter which a violin selection was very ably rendered by Mr. Melvin Moir accompanied on the piano by Miss Pearl Moir. A Selection on the violin was given by Mr. Fred Daters fol­ lowed by an instrumental duet by Blanche and Jim Mustard. Gaines and contests were then indulged in and a dainty lunch was served.- Al interesting feature of the evening was an address and presentation to Mr. and Mrs. Glen Bell, of a Cole­ man lamp and a washing pan. The address was read by Mr. Jim Mus­ tard and the presentation made by Misses Mabel Workman and Pearl Moir, after which Mr. Belli thanked the Young People for their kindness and generosity. The W.M.iS. Of the United Church held their regular monthly meeting ■on Thursday afternoon last. After the devotional exercises a solo was very ably rendered by Mrs. Maynard entitled “The Church by the 'Side of the Road.” The minutes of the. last meeting were read and approved df followed by the roll ’call, a piano duet was given by Misses Gladys Phssmore and Grace Brock. The origin of the fire is a mystery but is supposed to he caused by some one sleeping in. the barn. Mr. Block’s loss will be very heavy, Court of Revision, ■Court of revision on the Assess­ ment roll was held on Monday ev­ ening at 8 p.m. Those present hav­ ing taken their oath of members of the Court of Revision, Miokle and Spencei* being absent. It was moved by Petty and seconded by Jones that the Court of Revision he ad­ journed until June 14th at 8 p.m. Carried. Jas. A- Paterson, Clerk. Council Meeting The regular meeting of the vill­ age council was held on. Monday ev­ ening after the Court of Revision. All members being present. Mickle and Spencer having taken their oath as members of a Court of Revision. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved on motion of Petty and Jones. Carried. Petty reported re W, Carlile as wanting his car inspected so he could sell milk. Also the inspection of the- streets of the village, some being in need of gravel. Mickle and Petty that the Clerk ask for Tenders for 2DO yards of screened gravel, delivered on out streets. Tenders to be opened June 14th at 8 p.m. also Mr. Clark, to do the spreading at 20e. an hour. Car. Mr. Geiger reported re, the Dr. I, G. Smillie’s entrance to the rear of his property. Mr. Garnet Case appeared ask­ ing for the use of the South part of the^park property. Mickle and Petty that Garnet Case be given use of part of Park property for pasture at a rental of $2.00 providing he keeps weeds etc. down. Carried. Mr. Le Grande Wright, of Detroit, is visiting her parents here, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Hayter. Mr. Byron Brown, B.A., spent the week-end at his home here. Mrs. Ross Love spent a couple of days last week with her father Mr. Mansell Hodgins. Don’t forget the Strawberry social at Grace Church, Greenway on June 28th. Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Love celebrat­ ed their wedding anniversary .on the 3rd of June. The Switzer Hatchery at Granton have made a reduction in the price of Barred Rocks. See advt. last page. SHIPKA The regular meeting of the Ladies Aid was held June 1st at the home of Mrs. Roy Ratz. The president, Mrs. M. Ratz presiding 18 members being present. The meet­ ing was opened by singing the hymn “Softly and Tenderly Jesus is Call­ ing’’ after which the Lord’s Prayer was repeated in unison. Scripture Lesson was read by Mrs. M. Sweit­ zer from Ephs. 5th chapter. The re­ ports Of the different committees were given. The1 remainder of the afternoon was spent in making plans for the Strawberry Social which is to be held on June 23rd. Lunch was served by the Hostess and the meeting was closed by song and prayer by Mrs. E. Keys. Last Sunday was Missionary Sun­ day in the Sunday School. A duet was given by Lorraine Baker and Ruth Lamport and a reading by Vern Siharpe. r Mr. Wm. Sweitzer is attending County Council meeting in Goderich this week. Curtis, of Ailsa Craig spoke in the United Church last Sunday evening on behalf of the W. MS, Her address was much enjoyed by all. At the regular service next Bun­ day evening in the United Church Holy Communion will be celebrated. We urge all our people to attend. The session is also for contributions for missions, My. and Mrs, Carl gcriven, of Tor­ onto and Miss Mildred Schroeder, of Kitchener, spent last week at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Schroe­ der. The regular meeting of the Wo­ men’s Association of the United Church was held in the Sunday School rooms on Thursday, June 2. The president, Mrs. Jas. Maiwhinney presided. The lesson was read by Mrs. M. Finkbeiner and Mrs. F. W. Clarke1 led in prayer. After the reg­ ular routine of business had been at­ tended to, plans were made for the Strawberry Festival which will be served on the Church lawn on Tues­ day, June 21st. The following were the hostesses for the afternoon, Mrs. T. Yearley, Mrs. E. Lawson and Mrs. (Rev.) Hagelstein. Children’s Day will foe observed Sunday at the Evangelical Church. A choir of juniors will furnish choice musical selections ait both morning and evening services. There will al­ so be a miscellaneous program in the evening besides the exercises with the beginners, intermediates and juniors, each organized class will contribute some interesting number We look for big audiences and a splendid missionary offering. Every­ body cordially invited. A Strawberry Social will be given by the ladies of the Evangelical church on the church lawn and in case it rains the. basement will be used. The choir will have charge of the program. Huron, and daughter Mrs. E. Henry, of Detroit, visited Mr. and Mrs. H. Lewis on Thursday of last week. CROMARTY The June meeting of the W.M.S. met in the basement of the church on Thursday last with a good attend­ ance. Mrs. Cooper presided. The meeting opened by singing hymn 110 followed by prayer. The roll call was responded to by a text referring to some of the blessed promises con­ tained in God’s word. The secretary’s report was read, also the treasurer’s report which was very satisfactory. Mrs, Allen read the portion of the Study Book for the day, a portion which related to China, and her people which was very interesting. Mrs. Kersla'ke read the Current events from the Glad Tidings. Hymn 210 was sung after which a very in­ teresting paper was read by Mrs. Russell Scott from Dr. Graham, also one from Mrs. Tuff ord* A few min­ utes was spent dealing with the busi­ ness problems. Hymn 270 was sung and the meeting closed with prayer by Mrs. Miller and the Lord’s prayer in unison. Miss, Ada Speare returned home a few days ago after spending a few weeks with her brother in Harriston. Mr* Harry Speare, of Toronto, is at present visiting with relatives in the village. Mrs. Jno. Francis visited with her sister, Mrs. E. Foster, of Kirtkon, one . day last week. The Zion W.M.S. held their mon­ thly meeting at Mrs. R. W. Batten’s last Thursday and packed their an­ nual bale. Showei* Bride-Elect A very pleasant event took place on Saturday afternoon last when Miss Inez Creery and Mrs. M. La­ mond entertained a number of young ladies at the home of Mr. J. E. Creery in honor of Miss Mildred Routly, bride-elect of this month. During the afternoon Miss Routly was made the recipient of a kitchen shower. The many and useful gifts were drawn in on a gaily decorated wagon drawn by Master Ronald Fletcher and Miss Ethel Blackler, dressed as bride and groom to the strains of Mendelssohn's Wedding March played by Miss Mabel Berry. Miss Routly expresed her thanks to the. young .ladies in a few well chos­ en words after which tea was ser­ ved by Miss Creery and Mrs. Lamond ZION The W. M. $. entertained the Woodham, Whalen and Elimville Auxiliaries recently. Each auxiliary gave two numbers consisting of a reading and duet. The speaker was Mrs. Dale, of St. Marys, speaking on “Temperance” which was very inter­ esting, A social hour was spent fol­ lowed by lunch. Mr. Ephriam Hern attended the Conference in St. Thomas last week. Mr. and Mirs. Harold Hern and son Harry, Ross Hern and Mrs. H. Kyle, of Zion, spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Kerslake. Mr. and Mrs. Ephriam Hern and daughters Loreen and Hazol visited with Mrs. Hern’s sister Mrs. Orville Rogers, of Kirkton, on Sunday. They attended the funeral of the late Mr. Rd. Culfoert. The Mission Band held their meet­ ing at the church on Saturday after­ noon. A committee meeting to make ar­ rangements for the Hern picnic was held &t Ross Hern’s on Thursday ev­ ening of this- week* (Sunday School anniversary ser­ vices will be held on Sunday, June 12th at 10.30 and 7 to be eondtiefr- ed by Rev. Mr. Smith, a former pas­ tor, The music in the morning to be furnished by the Sunday School and in the evening by the Woodham choir. W. M. S. Meeting The W. M. S. held their monthly meeting on Thursday afternoon of last week at . the home of Mrs. R. Batten with the president in charge and a good attendance. The Devo­ tional part consisted of the Watch­ word repeated in unison. The Scrip­ ture lesson “A Hive of Bees”. A hymn followed with prayer by two members. The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. At this time arrangements were made for the annual W.M.S. tea which is to be held on Tuesday evening June the 14th followed by a program. The Devotional Leaflet “Barnabas the man of broad sympathies” was read by Miss Myrtle Earl. The 4th chapter of the situdy book was taken by Mrs. Melville Hern. A duet was sung by (Rev.) Mrs. White and Mrs. R. E. Pooley, which we all enjoyed. Leaflet entitled “Encouragement for tired leaders” was read by Miss H. Earl. The next meeting will be held at the .home of Mrs. Warren Brock. At this time we presented Mrs. White with a rug. The address was read by Mrs. Ralph Batten and the presentation was made by Mrs. Her­ man Kyle. Mrs. White was com- pletely taken by surprise but she made a very feeling and suitable re­ ply. The address was as follows: Dear Mrs. White,, Please accept this rug as a small remembrance of our association to­ gether. It may often remind you of pleasant hours spent with the folks of Zion. We join in wishing you and yours God’s richest blessing where'er you may be. Yours very sincerely, Ladies of Zion Church. After singing a hymn Mrs. War­ ren Brock closed the meeting with prayer. After the meeting a bale was .packed of quilts and clothing valued at $72.00 which was sent to the Presbyterial ^Supply Secretary, THAMES ROAD The June meeting of the W.M.S. was held at the home of Mrs. Robt. Kydd with a large attendance. The president Mrs. John Cann presided over the devotional period. (The meet­ ing opened by singing the hymn “Je­ sus Keep Me Near the Cross.” After which the Lord’s prayer was repeat­ ed in unison. The scripture lesson was then read from Proverbs 25th chapter. Mrs. N. Wiseman the se- cetary called the roll which was ans­ wered (by a verse of scripture. The minutes of the May meeting were read and approved. Mrs. Anthony read a letter of sympathy which Mrs* Kydd sent to Mr. Paul Madge and family. Everyone joined in singing “Rescue the Perishing.” After which a few sentence prayers were given. Mrs. Wiseman representative to the Presbyterial at Wingham then gave a very excellent report "of that day’s program, Mrs. ‘Collings convenor of the program for the month then took the chair and the following, very interesting program was deliv­ ered. A solo.“Somebody Cares” was rendered by Miss A. Hackney; Mrs. Kydd and Mrs. Morgan sang a duett entitled ‘'Scatter . the Gems of the Beautiful”; an instructive reading “The Samaritan of all Roads” was read by Mrs. A* Hunkin; a very in­ teresting playlette on “Temperance” was played by the following ladies. Mrs. N. Squire, Mrs. E. Hanson and Mts. L. Harris, The collection was received and Mite, Anthony pronounc­ ed the closing benediction. A social half-hour was spent over -the tea­ cups. The hostess was assisted by Mrs. Go Hings, Mrs. Hunkin, Miss Hackney and Mrs. Brown. Mr. Young, of London, visited at the home of Mr. and Mrs. N. Squires during the week-end. Rev. Mr. Anthony attended Confer­ ence last week with the Sunday ser­ vices in charge of the W. M. S. Mr. Whitlock opened the services follow­ ed by a splendid address by Mrs: J, Gardiner, of Kirkton. The Ladies choir rendered a pleasing anthem en­ titled “The Royal Banner.” DASHWOOD Dr. H. H. Cowen, L.D.S., D.D.S. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hoffman and Harry visited friends in London on Sunday. Mr. Clayton Pfile is building a new verandah to his house which adds greatly to its appearance. Mr. and Mrs. Wilkre McEwen, of Denfield were Sunday visitors with Mr. and Mrs. E. Gaiser. Dashwood Public .School picnic will be held on Friday, June 17th. Miss Edith Haines, of Toronto, is the guest of Miss Anna Tieman. GRAND BEND Mr. and Mrs. Molotar, of Thed­ ford, and Mr.’ and Mrs. Pollard, of Greenway, spent Sunday with. Mr, and Mrs. Leonard Ravelie.. Mr. Wm. Robert, of Listowel, has been in the village securing headquarters for his riding school for this sufamer and he has rented the Brenner Barns for the summer.- Mr. and Mrs. Abner Mollard have moved from Sarnia and have open­ ed up the tourist camp for the sum­ mer again. Mr. and Mrs Sol. Pollock visited Mr. and Mrs. Mansel Manson on Sunday. Miss Mary Yoe, of Sarnia, has re­ turned ahd opened up the Peggy Marie Beauty Shop and is continu­ ing her business hefe. Mrs. Gordon Turnbull add little daughter, of Parkhill, spent last week at Mr, and Mrs. Roy Holt’s. Mr* Henry Bossenbury, of Port Frank visited his son Bruce last week. *■ Mr, and Mrs. W. P. Lovie visited Mr. Frank Statton on Sunday. Mr* Herbert Southcott is having his home moved back from the street and making some improve­ ments. Miss Lilian Pollock, of Detroit, visited her parents over the week­ end. Mr. and Mrs. George Oliver, -of St, Marys, spent Sunday with Mr. W. B. Oliver.
