BIRTHDAY SURPRISE Olive Sims; Fran- SACRED CANTATA A sacred cantata entitled First Christmas” was rendered by the choir under the leadership of Mr. W. R. Goulding in the James streeet church on Sunday evening last to a large and appreciative congregation. Assisting the choir were Mr. Harry Hoffman, bass solo­ ist, of Dashwood, and Mr. G. M. Grant, violinist, of town. Solo parts were taken by Misses Ella Link, Jean Sheere, Lula Liuaenneid, Pearl Wood, Mrs. Stainton, Mrs. Elliott and Messi’s Walter Cutbush, P. Vahey, Clarence Down and Harry Hoffman and a duett by Misses Pearl Wood and Margaret Johns. Mrs. Elliott was accompanied with a violin obligato by Mr. Grant. At the conclusion of the service an il­ lustrated address with the same theme “The First Christmas” was given by the pastor and numerous beautiful slides were shown. “The Remember your friends with a flowering plant or cut flowers. EXETER WOMEN’S INSTITUTE The Exeter Women’s Institute held a meeting of more than usual interest at the home of Mrs. H. El­ worthy on Tuesday afternoon, The home was beautifully decorated and a prettily decorated Christmas tree added to the attraction. One of the members acted as jolly old St. Nich­ olas, there being an exchange of Xmas gifts. The president, Mrs. Etherington, presided' over the us­ ual business. Community singing was enjoyed. The presentation of a quilt was made to Mrs. Etherington in appreciation of her services. Mrs. Lindenfield and daughter, Miss Lula sang “O Haippy Christmas Day”. Miss Jeckell gave a tarx on current events and told a legend of the Christmas Tree. It was deceided to entertain the husbands and friends of the members about the middle of January. Lunch was served at the close and a vote of thanks was ten­ dered the hostess and those taking part in the program. The possibility of holding joint services during the Week of Prayer in the Exeter and Hensall churches and such others as were likely to be accessible was discussed and a meet­ ing was arranged for at which com­ plete plans might be made. With the coming of winter more horses are being driven and there is a short­ age of tie-posts. Added to this the motorists without thinking park their cars in front of these posts making it more difficult. It is hoped that motorists will take this little tip tie and park their cars away from a post.
