Hinnen. IMrs. McDonnell, of Hensall, Vice-( President opened the Conference by using the hymns ’’Work for the Night is Coming” and ‘‘The Morning Light is Breaking” and leading in, the invocation. The devotional period was taken by Main St. Auxiliary. Exeter. Mrs. Chandler the new mis tress of the Kippen Manse .made the delegates feel quite at home by her cordial welcome; Mrs. Mathers, of- Grand Bend, responding, expressing the hope that the ceegates would realize a greater sense of responsibility arid that they would receive inspiration which they would in turn carry home to their auxiliaries de termined not to allow the missionary fire to go out. Miss Murray was ap pointed secretary; Mesdames How ard and Spencer, the Finance Com mittee; Mrs, Peters and Mrs. Chris tie the Courtesy committee; and Mrs. Mathers and Mrs. Chandler the Resolution Committee. The minutes were read and approv ed. The invitation rrom Hensall to hold the 1934 convention there was accepted. Reports from all the sixteen aux iliaries were received. Some of the auxiliaries pressed for a lower allo cation; some expressed confidence ot reaching theirs while all showed won derful determination and ingenuity in, their method of raising money Mrs. Layton, Secretary of Y. W, Auxiliaries and Circles made a plea for a circle in every congregation where there were as many as five or six young women. Her reasons were that they might De trained to tabe the place of those in the auxil iaries, that they might be interested in missions, before being interested in other things, and Decause of the effect upon their own lives. Mrs. Wellwood, of Wingham, se cretary of Mission Bands addressed the convention on her department Nine Mission Bands reported. Some very important gleanings from the reports were—Attempt great things —Enthusiasm — Children love tc •know what is at the end of the road —The great value of Mission Band work in training leaders__its value is the cause of peace and brother hood. The Misses Goodhana and Brown contributed a beautiful duett entitled ‘‘There’s no Friend Like Jesus.” Miss Mary Dow sang. very accept ably, ‘‘Face to Face.” Miss Link rendered a solo, ‘‘The Touch of His Hand in Mine” with good expression Mrs. Powell and Mrs. Skelton from Centralia sang a duet "I Came to the Garden Alone” with fine feeling while Miss Edna Cochrane and Miss Jean Ivison also contrinuted a duet ‘‘Jesus Knows and Understands’ which gave much pleasure to her hearers. Miss Annie Ferguson, Pres byterial Treasurer reported a de crease in the year’s givings of $46'5 but that there was an increase from the Mission Bands. Mrs. H. Taylor, of Thames Road Convention speaker, spoxe on “The Challenge of the Women of China.’ S-he placed the responsibility oi helping the Chinese women upon the shoulders of Christian women at home. She described the older women of China as being illiterate unhealthy, suffering from foot binding and lack of hygenic know ledge, moving in a narrow circle knowing little of conations beyond They attribute the appalling death rate of infants to tne displeasure oi the gods. Polygamy is rampant in1 China and all children belong to the head wife. Wealthy women spend their time sewing, embroidery gambling often all day and smoking opium, the use of which, banned for a time, is now in the increase. The modern girl of China has un bound feet, attends government schools and the majority'can read and write. There are eighteen good universities in one of which seventy girls are enrolled, ten studying med icine. She quoted one inspector as saying that girls’ schools were su perior to boys’ schools both in their teachers and pupils. Bible study is not in these schools, more girls than boys attend. The Chinese Christian suffers more for his religion than the mis sionaries. IShe concluded her ad dress by saying that mis year had been the most difficult for China since 192i5 and asked that the mis sionaries might be upneid by our prayers. The Chiselhurst Auxiliary contri buted in'a marked degree to the suc cess of the convention in their play “A Woman’s Missionary Society Meeting” in which a Knowledge c* the great work done’ in foreign lands by the missionaries put to flight the discouragement of almost al1 their members with sue result that they decided that they would be having the Thank-offering. Mrs Gardiner, Presbyterial President spoke the closing words "To Watch with Him this Hour” Dy an increas ed attendance that our allocation be the measure of our ability, gretted church longed bership than in Mrs. M TIRES AND TUBES A Full Line of Parts and Accessories Repairing on all makes of cars •Acetylene Welding a Specialty Sold by iPhone 100 Serviced by Exeter, Ontario "’i ___ __ .... ____ She re- that only one-third of the members of our church be- to the W.
