MINISTERS MEET
1 The regular meeting of the South
j Huron Ministerial Association was
• held on Tuesday afternoon, Febru
ary 7th, at Caven Manse, Exeter.
The chair was taken by Rev. Jas
Anthony the president and thqre
were 9 clergymen present. The min
utes of the previous meeting were
read and on motion of Mr. Down
; and Capt. Barrett were sustained
j Reporting for the committee ap
pointed to take under consideration
«the activities of the Boyes’ Work
Board in South Huron, Mr. Down
stated that the preliminary arrange
ments having been made the Work
would now be directed by those
appointed to it in Toronto. On mo
tion of Messrs. Down and Young the
report was received and adopted
an-d the committee discontinued.
The topic for the day was .taken b.t
Rev. J. B. Rhodes. His paper dealt
with the problem of preacning as is
specifically presented by the pulpit
A challenge has "been flung to all
preachers by the new Barthian
movement in theological thought
This movement, associated with the
names of Karl Barth, Emil Brunner
Friedrich Cogarten etc., has aroused
widespread interest in Germany
Holland, Denmark and Switzerland
and is increasingly capturing atten
tion in Great Britain and on. this
side of the Atlantic. It is essentially
a rebirth of Protestantism, the ser-
ting in a new light of the formative
principles of the Reformation; a
renewal of emphasis on the trans
cendence of God, on the fact of sin
and the need for redemption; and a
proclamation of the authority of the
Word of God in a way that allows
full scope to the methods of histori
cal criticism. It was shown that this
Theology of Crisis, to give it the
name by which is is properly known
is intended to call a halt to the cur
rent anthropocentric forms of theol
ogy. On the conclusion of the paper
all those present engaged in a half
hour’s free and fruitful discussion
of the subject treated. A vote of
thanks was extended to the speaker
for his address. The meeting was ad
journed to reconvene on the first
Tuesday of March in Trivitt Mem
orial Rectory, Exeter, when Rev. M.
A. Hunt will take the paper.
