Church held their Christmas entertainment on Monday evening in the basement of the church. He was a veteran of the Fenian Raid of 1866. Mr. Hodgins was born in Tipperary, Ireland 88 years ago and came to Canada at the age of seven years. For 50 years he was a hotelkeeper in Hensail, af­ ter which he moved to London 12 years ago. At the time- of the Fen­ ian Raid he was one of the volun­ teers who .saw. service, being one of the few veterans' of that campaign which remained. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and an Orange­ man. His wife, pre-deceased him a number of years ago and surviving are one daughter Mrs. (Dr.) Chas. Lang, of New York; tw-o sisters, Mrs. J. W. O’Neil, of London and Mrs. Walter Shaw, of Dayton, Ohio, and one- brother Major Eli Hodgins, of Winnipeg. Funeral service was held at' the George E. Logan funeral par­ lors on Tuesday. Interment was made in the Exeter cemetery. The annual Sunday School enter­ tainment' of the United church was held in the Town Hall -on Friday ev­ ening last and was a great success. The hall was filled 0- capacity. The pastor Rev. tylr. Sinclair acted as chairman. The following program ’was given: chorus, “Here Comes the Sun” by ^lie school; solos by Ronald ^Parlmer and Bobby Hess, accompan­ ied by Mr. •Fred Hess on the guitar; recitations by Jack Drysdale, Keith Buchanan, Howard Love and Audrey ’Twitchell; exercises “Mother Goose” by Miss Murdock’s class; “Ten Little Santas” by Mrs. E. McQueen’s class; action- song, '’‘Christmas Cradle” by Mrs. Douglass’s class; drill, “At' Christmas Time’-’ by Miss G. Lani- mie’s- class; “Fan Drill” in charge of Mrs. Geo. Hess and Mrs. D. Hunt- ley; moonbeam drill, in charge of Miss Ellis and Miss Margaret John­ ston; violin solo- by Billy Glenn “The Bluebells of Scotland” accompanied by Miss Helen Glenn; “The Merry Minstrels” composed of Ferris Can- telon, Claude Blowes and Murray Campbell and Aldon Appleton gave a comic sketch which was greatly enjoyed; pantomine “Rock of Ages” in charge ofiMlss Ellis; Miss Florence Welsh and, Miss Margaret Johnston sang the duet “Rock of Ages”; the orchestra composed of Messrs. Clare Zuefle, E. Little, S'. Welsh and F. Cantelon accompanied Miss Welsh, gave some excellent musical numbers during the program. Firemen's Annual Christinas Tree .The Hensail Fire Brigade put on their annual Christmas Tree -on .Tuesday afternoon. Zwicker out again illness. Mr. M. W. Telfer Canadian Bank of several ribs fractured on Saturday night when he fell -on the step just outside of the post-office. His mapy friends hope he will soon be able to resume his duties at the Bank, Mr. J. Brophey lias completed the sinking of the rock well at the skat­ ing rink and the committee charge are arranging to pump and get things in that the rink can be put tion. Unfortunately Mr. has had a lot of hard luck which was caused by striking boulders and it was necessary to drill through them and follow up with the iron casing. Mr. and Mrs, J. Brown and family of Zurich, spent Sunday with Mrs, Brown’s parents Mr. Oestricher. Mrs. Lydia Braun Forest -yith her son Braun. Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Beaver and babe, of Pittsburg, Penn., are visit­ ing at the home of Mr. and .Mrs. Henry C. Beaver. Miss7 Dorothy Hirtzel, of Detroit, is spending Christmas with her par­ ents Mr, and Mrs. J. T. Hirtzel. Misses Matildla and Lydia Oes­ tricher, teachers of Windsor, are spending their vacation with their parents, Mr. and Mrs.. H. Oestricher. Mr. Wm. Rate, of Khiva, had a narrow escape from having his pro-' perty destroyed by fire last week. The boys were in the act of getting some gasolene from a barrel' in their garage and had a lantern with them. The fumes immediately took fire and it was with considerable difficulty that the automobile was saved. The garage was destroyed and with the efforts <oi£ the neigh­ bors; no further damage was done. At the-close of the speaking reeve Higgins thanked the business men of the village and all the others who helped the firemen make the Xmas tree possible. 'The presents were then distributed. EVery child pre- ■sent receiving a package and other presents were distributed from the tree. The firemeu are to be congrat- uated Mr. John Rollings had a narrow escape from being seriosuly burned on M'o.nday morning. He was in the act of lighting the fire in the morning and put on some kerosene with the result -that" the flames ig­ nited his clothing. He had pres­ ence of niind to pick up a mat and wrap it around his body and with the help of his family managed to put out the blaze but not before practically all'lils clothing “had been d-estroyed. There was a slight dam­ age to the household effects as well. The Crediton School concert was given in the Town Hall last Wed­ nesday evening. A good crowd was in attendance • thereby expressing their appreciation of the valued ser­ vices of the teachers. The hall was beautifully decorated with a large Christmas tree and streamers and bunting. Mr, H. K. Eilber, secre­ tary of the school board acted as chairman. 'Tlfe program consisted of choruses, dialogues, recitations, drills and a Cantata. Every num­ ber was given in an excellent' man­ ner showing the- splendid efforts of the teachers. The proceeds of the concert are to be used towards -buy­ ing a piano for the school at a later date. Edward, FORMER STEPHEN LADY DTES IN TOLEDO There passed away m Toledo Hos­ pital on Wednesday, December the 17th, Fern Alta Box, beloved wife of James Lyle Cowell, in her -35th year. Mrs. Cowell was the daughter -of Mr. and Mrs, Albert Box who now resides in Holland, Ohio. The deceased had perenitis and bright’s disease and had suffered considerably the- last few weeks. Her early life was spent in Stephen with her parents on the farm now owned by Lawrence Hill, when in 1904 they moved to Toledo, Ohio.
